Amy & Jello's Top and Bottom 5 Anime OPs

SPOILER WARNING: Jello's #1 Bottom pick explanation has spoilers for the series the opening is from. If you see the opening and realize this is a series you don't want to hear spoilers for, skip to 57:07.

Over the last two years Amy and I have watched thousands of anime openings to create our own, perfectly curated "Top 100" list. Now, after much toil and hardship, our work is on display for all to see. If you haven't watched the list yet, you can do that here!

But that's the officially curated list. The best openings ever made. It's objective, based on our own mandated grading rubric. It has nothing to do with whether or not we actually like an opening. The #1 opening on our final list is not actually Amy's favorite of all time, nor is it mine. So... what is? And, for that matter, what openings are the two of us absolutely sick of seeing?

As a little reward to ourselves for wrapping up the project, we decided to do a little Top/Bottom 5. We each picked our personal favorites and least favorites, had Aloha grab them for us, and then we presented them to each other and recorded our reactions as we explained why we love or hate these specific OPs.

It was so nice to take the training weights off and just say "I know this one's pretty good. BUT I'M SICK OF IT!!!!"

Hope you enjoy it!

Here’s the thing about least favorites- you can just look around for the most dogshit things in the genre and say “these are my least favorite because they’re objectively bad,” and like yeah that works. But when it comes to opinion, you’re not gonna do that. No, you’re gonna make your least favorites the ones you have a *personal grudge with.* And if you’ve seen a lot of ranking videos before making your own rankings then like. Yeah the bottom 5 are gonna be composed of some of the more popular ones, because you disliked them casually before but because everyone else is sucking their dicks you now hate them ranked competitively. It’s the difference between blocking them on Twitter because they don’t matter and staging a political assassination against them.

I had a strong feeling I knew what anime Jello's least favorite op would be, especially with the spoiler warning. Glad my intuition is still pretty strong

Conner K

I know you said you wont go into it, but I feel empowered every time I find a fellow re zero hater. The main character is such a horrible little fuck, he drags everyone around him into the dirt.

Probably An Owl

You talked about the second Beastars opening and it has the same problem where everyone plays the drop, so whatever it’s on a list or a guess the opening video me and my friend always cheer when the wolf guy runs around the corner cause that’s always the shot

Icemage11

There's a part of me that's suprised the bomberman jetters segment wasn't Jello repeating "watch bomberman jetters" over and over again for like 5 minutes

Zom 100 is fun. Watched while dog sitting for my sister one weekend but it balances the "YOLO-ing through the Apocalypse" Well. Some drama. A lot of comedy. I stopped watching at around the finale simply out of circumstance. Love the anti-capitalism. If I remember correctly the staff came from a particularly bad studio with crunch (Google tells me it's mostly OLM so idk—I heard worse about Toei and Mappa). That said the first episode is palpable in its hatred for that kind of work environment.

UInferno

Actually a little surprised not to see any Haikyuu OPs in there. I thought for sure Fly High!! would make it in.

James Patten

honestly it hurts that the Tokyo Ghoul op looks as bad as it does, because i love unravel as a song so much, the rhythm and beat just scratch a very specific itch for me that not a lot of songs hit

SparklySkittles

Melville wrote, "There is a wisdom that is woe" but Jello has posited that there is Anime that is Jibun Wo

James Patten

I feel that dub comment for sure. I like the singular setting of Durarara cause I feel like it does alot with a little sorta like Yakuza games do (or did anyway), but yeah Baccano trades that for a lot of good variety. I like the street gang stuff cause I really like how small the scope is. The supernatural stuff tends to take like... Not a backseat but like a side seat to the human led conflict, and watching the factions collide and tumble over each other in such a small space is something I really enjoy. The sword thing is probably my least favorite part (Anri in general is probably my least favorite part), but I still kinda like that it ties back into like, strained, toxic, or dependant relationships, even if by the whole thing gets so overcomplicated that its fuckin ridiculous. Thats just me though. Ive had Baccano ony list for forever and it fits my aesthetic so much that Im super hyped to get through it eventually, but I just kinda love Narita's style in general that I dont think I could ever hate Durarara

Daniel

I feel that for sure

Daniel

The duality of life: Is this jibun whoa? Or is this jibun woe.

Adam Stansbury

It's mostly the latter thing! But I also think Durarara!! has a lot of Narita's less-good traits as a writer on full display. Baccano! also benefits from a bunch of cool settings: Luxury trains, Depression era gang war back alleys, cruise ships, a secret alchemy town in the Black Forest, Alcatraz, 1700s Italy, etc etc. It's vibes are just way more fun and it's scope is more interesting. Durarara!! is just like "Oho! Bet you weren't expecting an anime set in IKEBUKURO. Never seen that before!" The cool stuff with Celty degrades into focus on weird stuff with all the kids who have Secret Gang Leader backstories and a sword that gets people sword pregnant. It's just so much weirder and worse than even the lamest Baccano! light novels. It also doesn't help that Baccano! has one of the best English dubs of all time and Durarara!!'s is like actively bad.

JelloApocalypse

Yeah, this is why the annotations on the main video say it's one of the most contentious openings for me to call "bad". Given how many lists it appears on it clearly must mean a lot to some people, but I'm sorry, speaking on a super basic technical level the animation timing is just *terrible*.

JelloApocalypse

Im surprised you dont like Durarara at all. I get that the main trio of high schoolers are kind of rough if you dont buy into the high school angst of it all, but even then I feel like the Narita style of character movement and conflict structure would still win some points for you enough not to HATE it (unless its just cause its one of the 8 series keeping Baccano from finishing, in which case fair)

Daniel

Oh ok ill weigh in on Oath Sign as an Oath Sign enjoyer. In so far as the visuals are concerned, it really is a matter of spectacle. Fate Zero was a HUGE deal in animation quality coming out in 2014 with all its particle effects and 3d cg spaces that didnt look like total shit 100% of the time, so seeing Saber magical girl change and Tokiomi wave his fire hand around was kind of just true ape brain glitter. The song ramps in just the right way that because its moving fast ENOUGH it feels sort of in step even though taking a closer look at it you can see its not matching with the beat or even good animation practice. And its just got this triumphant fucking tone. This "im a knight riding into battle" tone. Theres a cover by I wanna say Rikatwoo of this song and the final line is translated as "Ever more onward, this is the oath I swear" and that really just nails the tone that i think alot of people will swear by for this op

Daniel

I think it's worth both watching and reading. The manga is more fast-paced and silly and the anime is a more cinematic experience. Both are really cool. Definitely look up some content warnings beforehand though, it's a pretty fucked up series.

JelloApocalypse

this was very cute to watch both of you talk about your hated and favorite picks. you 2 had such a fun and funny energy talking about your picks.

Gemprincess

I totally forgot about that!! Based on the teaser trailer the color work seems appropriately gorgeous for a Bug Films project. Feeling cautiously optimistic.

Henry Dyer

what i can only describe as a loud 'squee' left my mouth when Yam put a kamisama kiss OP in that show is so cute ;-;

Catawampus

Having done both IMO the manga is better overall. The anime is handicapped by its short length (only 1 cour), so effectively it only really covers the 'first act' - it's pretty good for what its worth, but a lot of Chainsaw Man's highlights are a little later on, and at MAPPA's current pace it'll be a pretty long time before the adaptation gets to those. Also if you go with the manga, you get a complete story if you stop after chapter 97. Plus, as gorgeous as the anime adaptation is, it's a simple fact that nothin' beats Fujimoto's paneling.

Fauve

should I watch chainsaw man or read it? seeing both amy and the gelatin man gas it up as being good has me convinced to take a look at it but only have time for one

Violet DB

My favorite opening is by Kana-Boom and Studio Bones Starmaker, from MHA

Noah Finch

Release the epithet bacano opening I beg you

Beckett’s Bricks and Broadway

hey Jello, to make you hate your least favourite op even more, in the scene with Ussop his fishing rod wire is cut of past the rail on the ship and dose not hit the water. The budget of that era of one piece was so low they had to feed the animators that piece of fishing line like a really long noodle so they could survive the winter.

Hamyton

YEAHHHH ZOM 100! THAT ONE FUCKS SO HARD!! and chainsaw man. and baccano!. but everyone already knows those are amazing Tho if I had to pick a fave anime op it would probably be the kageki shojo opening. It’s so colourful and sweet, and seeing sarasa happy just makes me smile. Plus the songs a bop. Dare date ibiku waiba! I don’t think that’s how you actually spell it!

PurpleIsDebeste

Looks at yam bottom 2, *shakes hand, shakes hand*

John Sextro

Shaking hands with Amy for putting the second Kamisama Kiss OP on her list; as someone who also gets incredibly excited seeing it appear on a top OP lists. It’s so fun, it’s a bop, and the lyrics “I’m just spinning around, around, around the world.” Have lived rent free in my head for years

Abby_Gale

Haven't watched Zom 100 but I am looking forward to the next things Bugfilms is work on which is the Witch Hat Atelier adaption.

Beefy_Cat_Lover

this was a great listen and I'm so glad that someone else also dislikes the your lie in April opening lmao, but also it brought an immense joy to my heart to just see wasteful days of highschool girls in any list, its one of my favourite openings and one I regularly listen to lmao

BIBSSS

baccano and chainsaw man as both ur top picks is so good, i fucking love both of those openings. also big agree on when people just pick a worse opening from a series, im half convinced they do it to be different. i cannot imagine living in any world where people see the second soul eater opening and genuinely go "this is better!" same sentiment goes for the durarara second durarara OP compared to the first but obviously baccano btfos either of them lmao ALSO THE SECOND BEASTARS OPENING GOD IF I HAVE TO WATCH ONE MORE ANIME OP LIST AND SEE THAT OVER THE FIRST OP IM GONNA SCREAM!!! thanks as always for making this, keep up the great work (:

Kelzo

Oh, Wolf's Rain is a GREAT pick for second place! It really do have that immaculate teenage vibe. Unfortunately I can never rank it higher myself cos every time I watch it I get bothered by that excessively long cut of him running only to abruptly end on a spider wiggling to the tune of the music. I dunno why but the timing of it just made me burst out laughing as a kid. Every time I'd dread the moment where I had to stop my cool emo angsting and look at tarantula ballet. But five seconds of weirdness doesn't ruin an otherwise great song! It just became a meme on my watchthrough

Bunni89

F/SN (The VN) is quite literally my favorite piece of media ever, and I refuse to watch or read basically any other piece of Fate media including the anime adaptations because I know I won't like them. Whenever I see the OP's to the Fate anime adaptations that decision is always reinforced because they barely represent what is actually really good about the VN in favor of the honestly pretty average fights. Also, most of Fate definitely does not look great. I always love looking at the original Shirou portraits and his 5 foot long monkey arms.

Your Moist Toast

I've seen the wet lips stylization in a few things, and I FUCKING HATE IT EVERY TIME

SnoCone

Something about Hikaru Nara annoys me. Glad to know I'm not the only hater. Mild nitpicking but Yoasobi is actually a singer-songwriter duo!!! The vocalist's name is Ikura. She's really great live.

Fauve

People actually say the opposite??? Holy shit man, resonance is so good and iconic it launched all those reanimated memes. Paper Moon is just.. ordinary anime opening, tbh. It's not bad but whenever anyone says it's better just because it's angsty I wanna claw my hair out. Tbh plenty of the opening songs did way better dark/sad imagery!

Bunni89

I feel so validated hearing yall say Resonance is better than Paper Moon. I've quietly held that opinion for *years* now and always felt crazy for it.

Nicholas Delcambre

Any particular thoughts on the mother's basement breakdown of chainsaw man's op?

SinfulSloth

WOO, THE LAIN DANCE MADE IT!

Your Moist Toast

When I was watching Re:Zero I came up with stupid nicknames for all the characters and I called Rem, Ram, and the unrelated bartender man named Rom "Screentime, Scraantime and Scroontime".

Flaming Olive

Jello's 5th worst is a based pick for a least favorite openings list honestly

Flaming Olive

Baccano mentioned!!! Such a good show 👏👏👏

Crimson Claw

Yknow i was gonna comment “bottom 100 ops when” on the original list as a joke but ill take it

Psycho

Ooh bonus. The most (subjective) Jibun Wo
