Added 2025-03-20 01:29:25 +0000 UTCFinally! After two years of work, it is finished. Thank you guys so, SO much for your patience on this video. You have no idea how much effort went into creating this thing and I really appreciate all my Patrons who stuck it out while my production line was relatively quiet.

I just noticed the backwards 4 in Link Clicks OP and all I gotta say is nice.

2025-09-09 10:50:58 +0000 UTCNot only did God give him Protagonist Powers™ but like ten volumes later it's revealed that he also got God Powers™ and goes SS3. Also there is actually an overarching plot, cosmic ants that have devoured countless realities are chasing after their queen and her human lover after they ran away. They come to fantasy land, but by the time the Protag has to actually fight the ants that might pose a threat he already unlocked his God Powers so it isn't a challenge. Then the Protag gets poisoned by a poison that only affects God's but he survives since he's the Protag. This is where I stopped reading like 8 years ago, so he's probably unlocked Ultra Instinct or something by now.

2025-04-12 11:13:45 +0000 UTCI have now consumed this video with my dearest friend Almond. It was absolutely worth the wait, and both of us had our attention GLUED to the screen for every single second. When the #1 opening was revealed, Almond literally gripped their water bottle so hard they crushed it. Absolutely fantastic job on every aspect of this, from the research to the artwork to the editing. Everyone who had a hand in creating this should be proud.

2025-04-01 00:38:54 +0000 UTCYesterday I found out that anime you used at the beginning of the "Bad Theming" section- the smartphone isekai thing- its opening actually has good theming! Some friends of mine have these bad anime watchparties, and recently they've been on an isekai kick trying to find out what makes the genre tick and whether there's anything worth salvaging- so we watched the first little bit of smartphone anime. It turns out that the opening actually *perfectly* conveys what all these characters are about, and what happens in the story. Which is to say: nothing! Nothing happens, and none of the characters have traits. It would've been bad theming if they had somehow implied otherwise! Smartphone isekai is a show that's *bizarrely* devoid of ideas. The "premise" is that this guy gets accidentally killed by God, who resurrects him in another world by way of apology- but he gets one favor, too, and the favor he asks for is that he gets to keep his smartphone. So you might think, okay, this show has something it wants to do with, like, how having a smartphone might interact with a fantasy setting? But... no. No, it discards its premise immediately. You know how in the opening, you get the one shot of the guy catching his phone as it descends from the heavens, and then the phone features in none of the rest of the opening, instead focusing on a gaggle of anime girls bouncing around doing nothing? That's theming! That mirrors the show! Seven minutes in, the protagonist confronts some street toughs menacing a pair of waifus in an alleyway, and we flash back to God saying "and also, unrelated to the phone thing, I'm going to give you superpowers so you're wicked fast and wicked strong and automatically the best at every magic", and then the rest of it is just him using that to impress interchangeable waifus who are really enamored by how strong and good he is at like, collecting six wolf pelts for a quest or whatever. Also he learns teleport magic that lets him go back to Earth like *immediately* so it's also not "trapped in another world". He uses the phone once, to google an ice cream recipe. So anyway, yeah, turns out the opening is genius and you should probably squeeze it in at #0 above Mob Psycho. It's only fair.

2025-03-25 17:36:19 +0000 UTCGod you have no idea how long my friends and I have been harping on the "Creditless" and "60FPS" Youtube uploads and how dogshit they can be. Your "Guess the Anime OP" videos actually inspired me to play a modified version with my friends. And finding uploads to do that lead me to the scourge of bad uploads. So thank you so much for this wonderful video and for putting words to feelings I've long had about anime OPs.

2025-03-25 10:38:34 +0000 UTCGreat video, good use of 2 years of your life lol. Regarding credits on your rubric, I really liked the credits in Servant x Service's opening. There's a chance you didn't see it among the thousands you've watched, since the show is pretty niche and I've never seen it in any "Top X Openings" videos. If that's the case, I highly recommend to take a look :)

2025-03-25 03:43:01 +0000 UTChonestly the assassination classroom openings are so disappointing because the songs and the story they tell as you go from one to the other is amazing but the actual video part is hot garbage.

2025-03-25 03:10:28 +0000 UTCReal good stuff. I did not expect for there to be an OP from a series I have never even heard of in the top 5.

2025-03-25 02:27:46 +0000 UTCThis is the only top anything list where I found the intro explaining the ranking system to be just as entertaining as the actual list part if not more, and that’s saying a lot because the list is fantastic

2025-03-25 00:47:13 +0000 UTCSee the problem with this video is you were objectively right about how great each of the OPs are and now I want to watch and rewatch so much anime it's not even funny. Animation's a beautiful medium.

2025-03-23 02:57:20 +0000 UTCAn OP I didn't see in the docs or list, which I found really clever in how it evolves with the show, is School Live. It does the vibe clash, but as an unreliable narrator, so you don't know that it's special until episode 2. i can't say much more without spoiling the show, but it blew my mind in high school to use OPs that way. Also another OP I didn't see that sparks joy in me is the Keroro Gunso one. it's very peppy and fun and does a good job of showing off the characters and selling you the concept of fun little silly alien anime.

2025-03-22 23:40:09 +0000 UTCAre there any plans to talk about the *worst* anime openings, and if not extensively discuss them, just list them out?

2025-03-22 22:19:47 +0000 UTCGotta say this wasn't what I was expecting, just a few examples of each good and bad thing then a montage of all the openings with no further commentary. 2025-03-22 17:14:27 +0000 UTCThis was a really fun video! I've never thought about the credits in openings before but now you're right the good openings feel a little bit empty without them. I loved the gintama reference, I was a little sad that no gintama openings made it I specially like the ninth opening with the failed ending but i guess they werent jibun wo enough

2025-03-22 12:35:22 +0000 UTCIn terms in off "surprised this op didnt get on the list" after i watched the video i said to myself "Wow! Surprised keep your hands off Eizouken!s op didnt make the list. i love that one! Easy Breezy!" but as i said that i did consider alot of the points you two made for criteria. And, in the pitch black darkness of my room, stood in the middle of it and talked out loud to myself about the Eizouken op for like... 15 minutes?? and i think it wouldnt make the list either, mostly how the visuals dont really play too crazy into the overall premise of the show or its themes. But i LOVE the visuals theyre so fun! but all this to say. Easy Breezy. sighs.

2025-03-21 22:03:28 +0000 UTCI was pleasantly surprised to see The Day make the list, and do so WELL too. I'd always liked the song, but thinking about it now it IS probably the My Hero OP I could describe the best if asked. Not surprised to see the JoJo dominance, nor am I at all surprised by the three Mob Psycho openings collectively topping the list. I guess if I were going to nominate any OPs, I'd say Rain (OP 5) from Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood and Odd Future (OP 4) from My Hero Academia. Rain has some really beautiful visuals and Odd Future I think really synchs well with the music, though I'm pretty sure it does suffer from the dreaded song title issue by having that wall of text block out a really cool shot of Shigaraki with a bunch of writhing Nomu behind him.

2025-03-21 01:08:35 +0000 UTCOne of my favorite transitions in the top 100 is the bit from 28-30. Since the Mashle OP blew up on release the part of the song people know the best is the bit where the beat drops. But, the clip stops right before that then transitions into Monster; a eerie and unsettling song. Having it start playing when your brain is excepting the Mashle beat drop adds to Monsters creepy vibe. In the monster OP's visuals we see the protagonist running and hiding from some unseen threat. what was the threat? Immediate transition to Wolf's Rain-- aw man the wolf got em.

2025-03-21 00:06:58 +0000 UTCAmazing stuff- but are you really gonna put The Duchess Approves at #6? While the single still image of a rose followed by a full-screen credit for the gown designer *is* thematically relevant to the ethos of the show, and it does avoid putting the credits over the visuals, I feel like it really could've done more to sell the viewer on the irascible character of Saunterblugget Hampterfuppinshire. I feel like there were better representatives of the Black & White Period Piece Old Lady Boring Movie Channel ouvre you could've gone with. Is this a case of it just getting a boost from the Jennies?

2025-03-20 17:16:01 +0000 UTCAmazing video. It's clear a lot of work went into it, and the final product ended up even better than I could ever imagine. Pretty safe to say this is the best top 100 anime openings out there. If I had to mention some openings I wish made the count, I'd say Gundam The Origin's third one, Fuuto PI and Overman King Gainer (even if that last one has some credit issues)

2025-03-20 16:12:40 +0000 UTCI’d argue Eizouken has a better reasoning than Yuri On Ice because its a show about students trying to animate on the cheap with harsh deadlines, where there are discussions about reuse of assets and animation, and the whole rest of the op is also a homage to cheap animation strats, like the little 2 frame stickers …buuut i do also think its probably more egregious than Yuri On Ice so I get why it wasn’t on the list regardless

2025-03-20 15:27:50 +0000 UTCPersonally haven't watched a lot of anime, but I did really like Great Pretender and Odd Tax, and I'm SO glad they're on there. A few other OPs I personally like but aren't on there: - Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. If this counts, it's definitely a favorite. Scottt Pilgrim is one of my favorite franchises, a prime example of an adaptation straying from the source material and still being great, and also the first time I was aware of Science Saru. Love the colors, perfect song, top notch animation, hits the mark. - Sorry about this next one, it's completely subjective and can be easily disregarded: Danganronpa 3 Despair Arc. Not as objectively good as the rest, but I really like it. The music drop is about a second off where I personally want it to be, but even then it still gives me the jennies. I love the pastel color scheme, the minimalist formatting, how the credits are placed, and it's also one of my favorite songs in an OP. Unfortunately there's a weird and unneccessary panty shot from Akane, but thankfully it's far away AND the 2nd version covers it up. Not the best OP, but like the DR series itself, it's a guilty pleasure for me. - Pop Team Epic. This show I actually hoped would be on the list. Both S1 and S2 openings are very different in presentation, yet still convey the same themes: Popoko and Pipimi being everything and everywhere; seemingly unstoppable forces of nature. S1 has a more traditional structure of anime openings, but takes advantage of multiple aesthetics and art styles. It's one of those cases where, at least for me, the randomness and insanity of the shots work. They are everything and everyone. In your walls, your fridge, your toothpaste. Amazing song that matches the surreal and spontaneus nature of the show, and also has one of my favorite drops. Meanwhile S2 has a more unique approach of having the whole thing be one entire shot where the two girls multiply until they've esentially taken over the entire setpiece, building and spreading like a rapidly invasive species, resulting in a wide canvas of Popokos and Pipimis, all doing different actions, forms, shapes and sizes. They are everywhere. They are unstoppable. Also has a wonderful song that supplements the surreal nature of the show. Both openings of course implement their credits very well in my opinion (even if some of them are hard to read). So yeah, amazing video, looking forward to watching/listening to the other 7 hours!

2025-03-20 15:06:56 +0000 UTCAmazing work! I think it's only been the once, maybe twice before that I've seen a ranked OP video (unless you count ones focussed only on a single year) and not for a long time. So it's fascinating to revisit a lot of shows this way. From what I would consider my first anime Wolf's Rain to a couple of things on my 'catching up with the 2020s' to-watch list (as well as plenty I don't know of course). Delighted to see both Vinland Saga S02 OPs. One of my favourite newer ones. Although I was trying to rein in any 'hey, where's X?' feelings, I did get a little worried while watching the list when I realised I hadn't seen Mob Psycho 100 feature (trying to guess #1 didn't cross my mind). You got me! XD I should revisit March Comes in Like a Lion sometime and see if I can figure out what it's missing. Wouldn't surprise me if the credits are a flaw.

2025-03-20 12:35:34 +0000 UTCive been waiting for this one for a while and rubbed my greedy little hands together when i got the email notif for it. needless to say, didn't disappoint. probably some of your best editing, if not your best (tho that's hard to pick when all your videos are so high quality.) felt an immense amount of satisfaction hearing u tear into other top 100 lists for constantly putting OPs with terrible credits on them, it's been a pet peeve of mine for YEARS and it's so so SO satisfying to see a list take that kind of thing into account. personally very happy with this list, especially the number 3 and number 1 picks, ofc love all the jojo opening appreciation as they're some of the best in the business and ive even plucked out a few new favs that ive never seen before! as always keep up the great work and im looking forward to seeing that 8 hours of bonus material from u. much love also goes out to yam, luvey, clotted, aloha, oz, vixen and jay for all the help they contributed.

2025-03-20 09:05:22 +0000 UTCSimply amazing editing, all these openings are in fact very Jibun Wo, and it blew my mind to see number 1 (which I won't spoil for anyone reading the comments before seeing the whole thing).

2025-03-20 07:13:41 +0000 UTCThis came out absolutely gorgeous. I tend not to comment but had to say me and my group of friends have been fans for a long time - while in call one of them mentioned getting a notif on patreon and we all darted away. The amount of effort put into this is abundant and the editing truly emphasizes the work showcased throughout. The editing for number one especially giving me chills. Theres so much love here and even if I haven't seen everything here, you can feel the heart put into each of these openings, as well as the love put into putting them on display here. Also the Charlotte slander is so validating and lost it at each mention. Thank you for all you do, looking forward to the future behind the scenes!

2025-03-20 07:13:13 +0000 UTCGod this editing fucks so hard. I'm still watching but this is some of the best visuals I've seen from a YouTube video. Edit: holy shit a 50 minute amv with appropriate transitions, what the hell.

2025-03-20 06:40:49 +0000 UTCAlso, per the footnote about comparing the P5 and Royal openings, I'll compare Ryuji's first entrance and exit in P5 at around 10 seconds and contrast it with Yusuke's entrance and exit in Royal around 27 seconds. In the former, we are zoomed on the stylized credit for Shoji Meguro, so the viewer's focused is drawn by the text. Ryuji enters from the right, leaps directly on the credit, and is then carried off left along with the train, which becomes the focus when the camera next shifts. Ryuji's big leaps are expressive, take only 2 seconds, and contrast with Ann and Yusuke's smooth descents earlier. It portrays him as bold, strong, and fast, which is emphasized by the motion of the train. Conversely, Royal has Yusuke enter while focused on his eye, following Ryuji throwing a briefcase with the case exiting right and Ryuji's arm landing in the bottom left. Yusuke's eye is center left, matching neither the motion nor where the viewer's eye is drawn. After we zoom out from his poorly placed eye, we see him floating in front of... girders? Scaffolding? Something. Not doing any sort of action, just floating like Tanuki Mario in SMB3 while the briefcases rises to float parallel beside him at his speed. He unsheathes his sword while a bunch of generic slashes poof the briefcase to nothing, revealing a heart. After that, the heart and Yusuke travel in opposite directions, with Yusuke doing a weird midair spin off to the top left while the heart circles down towards the bottom right. The next scene does draw focus on the top right, but we cut to the heart, not Yusuke, which makes no sense because they were nowhere near each other and their contrasting colors make for a jarring cut. Not to mention the girders that existed prior are not a part of the next scene, so there's no sense of setting or focus. This 3 second scene is too complex for what it wants to show, so it makes cuts by disallowing Yusuke from doing any cool swordplay and just having him exist where he's needed instead of organically existing in the space created. The P5 opening allowed Yusuke to just do a simple, effective flip off a billboard in the same amount of time as the above mess, and his big painting moment later on only has 5 paint strokes, a pose, and a hold, which accounts for 7 whole seconds. P5's opening allows a character to perform a simple, striking action in a clearly defined space, while Royal just barfs movement at you and hopes the colors confuse you more than a 2000s scene kid's outfit.

2025-03-20 06:30:33 +0000 UTCiirc Angel Beats has a lot of cuts that are weirdly off-time with the music? Both OPs are really good though.

2025-03-20 05:55:20 +0000 UTCWhile you were talking about the Fireforce OP I kept expecting you to bring up your credit directly on the wet ass of the girl story, but that must have been a different opening now that I'm thinking about it.

2025-03-20 05:50:44 +0000 UTCI've only just started watching, but you mentioned how important credits are to the opening, and I want to mention a show that has really good credits usage that I know isn't on here. Look up the opening to "Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger". I know it's live-action and that you aren't a tokusatsu/super sentai fan, but it incorporates the credits into the opening extremely well by making them a part of the scenery rather than just slapped on top of the visuals. Also King-Ohger is a good show, if you every try a sentai series out, that one is really good

2025-03-20 04:49:41 +0000 UTCLoved your dedication to editing for the whole OP montage. All the details to matching timing, transitions, and extra effects (like the color invert for the Jojo Part 3 Dio OP and reversing the text for Link Click 2) really added another level that you can't find elsewhere. Now to just wait for Youtube to take it in a back alley and beat the music to death with a shovel. I'll guess that only 2/3rds of the music will be muted since we're optimistic here.
Act One
2025-03-20 04:42:49 +0000 UTCExtremely pleased to see Haruhi Suzumiya make the cut, especially since I've always cared more for Super Driver than Bouken Desho Desho. Also happy about Odd Taxi. Lots of really solid picks, especially the deepcuts. If it were up to me I probably would've considered putting Connect (Madoka Magica), Dying Wish (Moriarty the Patriot), Wrong World (Girls Band Cry), Paper Bouquet (Executioner and Her Way of Life), and Kimi ni Furete (Bloom Into You) somewhere on there. If my eyes aren't deceiving me IMO they're definitely on par with a lot of the stuff that did make the cut, though I probably couldn't make a strong enough case for any of them to crack the top 20, lol.

2025-03-20 03:35:39 +0000 UTCIf that opening had been 30 seconds long it probably would have been on there. And pretty high, too! Repeated animation was a huge minus points for us and Eizouken has a lot of it. I think Yuri on Ice is one of the only exceptions and that's because Yam made a good case for the first round of animation being the practice and the second round being the real performance, which is how the show itself is formatted. Eizouken is an amazing show, though.

2025-03-20 03:33:32 +0000 UTCWith the amount of polish here, along with the scale and depth you undertook, it’s clear that those two years of effort were well spent on creating an amazing product.

2025-03-20 03:33:29 +0000 UTCThanks so much! I really appreciate the kind words. I hope this one goes over okay. I went through a lot of effort to write this in a neutral voice and make fun of myself as often as I could to prevent it from feeling self-aggrandizing. I literally even introduce myself with a booing SFX, haha. My hope is that this video gets uploaded and it goes over very quietly. I think the best case scenario is people watching this and checking out 2-3 new shows because of it. I think the ultimate goal would be to make people more aware of typography's role in an opening. It's been a special interest of mine since i was a little kid.
JelloApocalypse
2025-03-20 03:31:24 +0000 UTCTruly worth the watch and the amount of time and effort you put into this video alone, not counting the project in its entirety, is SO obvious. As someone who caught the tail end of the stream you and Amy did last year, it was really nice seeing you explain HOW you went about ranking them and what your thought process for the list as a whole was. And it's really nice seeing this come from an actual artistic perspective, like how Mother's Basement ranks anime openings, compared to most people who go off the fight scenes and the music. Won't be surprised if you get a ton of hate as usual for this when it releases on Youtube, even though you had a VERY CLEARLY defined set of rules that you went into immense detail into throughout the beginning but despite that, this is easily one of your best videos. Extremely fun, extremely informative, extremely educational, and the editing is top notch. Incredible work from both you and the team. Thank you.

2025-03-20 03:10:38 +0000 UTCOh and #1 would also have been my pick for the top slot. Definitely one of the rare perfect openings, which I heavily attribute to the literal first ½ second that plays before I can usually hit the skip button. So catchy instantly that I bothered to watch it and wasn't made to watch an opening that ruined the show.

2025-03-20 03:10:18 +0000 UTCWell done as always, Mr. Apocalypse. May your thousands of hours of effort remain appreciated by an extremely niche group of individuals for the rest of time. Hats off to you and Yam and everyone who made this possible.)

2025-03-20 03:01:56 +0000 UTCI gotta say, as someone who vehemently despises anime openings this was a really interesting watch. There's a lot of songs I recognize despite never watching the OP or even the show, which is good information. Personally, while I like them artistically, I have WAY too good of a track record of predicting not just the plot & spoilers, but also character arcs, deaths, and plot structure when I watch OPs. Which usually makes them feel like poison to the watching experience by artificially removing most of the original artist's vision from the show. In about 85-90% of openings if I watch them it will noticeably lessen my personal experience of the show. Which was very funny for my friends to realize we watch things together and I spout out a spoiler for the ending before episode 1 is over. But since this list doesn't have anything current on it, I don't have to worry about that and can just enjoy getting to see a curated list without worrying about ruining the experience.
