After many moons, we are back with a frankly insane amount of movie reviews! This round's theme is Movies About Birds and all the Blue Sky movies I've never watched. But, because it's me, there's also a heaping helping of Scooby-Doo! on top.

My family and I watched The Boy and the Heron and we left it having to read the Wikipedia page for it because we just couldn't understand what was happening. Like we were confused by certain character moments and motivations and we just weren't really vibing with the movie at all. A Ghibli movie I will most likely only see once

And even the first one was only modestly successful. It's a "franchise" in the same way as those terrible Alpha & Omega movies.

I LOVE those books as a kid and I loved how wild they got. Already a wild series even before they reveal it's post-apocalyptic and all the humans died off. As silly as it is I still have a soft spot for it - thank you for checking it out !

2024-09-15 22:04:17 +0000 UTCbit of a fun postscript: i did some thinking and remembered that the only other thing i’ve that does anything even close to what Miyazaki does with “How Do You Live?” is Jean-Luc Godard’s 1987 “adaptation” of King Lear; which actually isnt an adaptation of King Lear at all and is really a vaguely post-apocolyptic indie movie about a handful of people attempting to stage King Lear but keep getting sidetracked and distracted by French Cinema-isms. again though, i cant quite say this is the same as “How Do You Live?” because King Lear is in large part an elaborate ruse by Godard to essentially troll his producers into giving him a million dollars, however it makes me weirdly happy to think about the fact that Miyazaki opted to do something ive only seen happen in experimental french new wave cinema.

But it’s still like… a 30 year old satire

2024-09-13 14:02:38 +0000 UTCFair enough! Not everyone likes everything. I suppose where we differ is that I *don't* find Only Yesterday boring whatsoever. It definitely moves slowly but the simultaneously universally relatable and very specific nature of Taeko's life and struggles are extremely compelling to me, and I think offer so much more than just "life sucks". There are harder moments but these, I feel, are balanced out by moments like Taeko giddily dreaming about her first crush or connecting with another girl getting bullied about menstruation. But anyway, if you don't connect with something you don't connect with something, and that's completely fine. I also haven't actually seen a Makoto Shinkai movie so I can't speak on whether his movies are good or not, I was just talking about a particular statement you made that I very vaguely remember, where you say something along the lines of not being very good with really vague, artsy, dreamlike stuff. IDK I could be misremembering.

I think he's making exactly the art he wants to make and I think he's doing it successfully. I just hate it, lmao. Especially because literally all of his movies except GotF end like "THAT WAS TWO HOURS OF DEPRESSION. YOU KNOW WHAT WOULD'VE CURED IT? BEING A FARMER IN RURAL JAPAN. I'M ISAO TAKAHATA."

2024-09-12 21:18:56 +0000 UTCI definitely hold dialogue and narrative as the most important thing in media but I think theming falls under the narrative umbrella. If I find something thematically weak, it's usually because the narrative wasn't strong enough to successfully carry the themes. Thematic issues on their own come up a lot more when I talk about video games, especially on streams. In that medium there's an extra level of interactivity that can play into the themes, so it's not just about narrative but it's also about mechanics and I find that interplay much more interesting. Makoto Shinkai wishes he knew what themes were lmao.

I think I got that impression with how narrative-focused rather than theme-focused a lot of your analyses of things are, including movies not intended for children, and I think you also said something along those lines in the Makoto Shinkhai review.

2024-09-12 19:36:24 +0000 UTCOh my god, Legend of the Guardians is my favorite Zack Snyder movie. Funnily enough, Animal Logic did the animation for both LotG and Happy Feet. They were the best in the business for birds for a little while there in the 2000s. Weirdly enough, they changed the setting in the movie to Australia instead of America. Idk why. Subjectively, LotG is a 9/10 for me—it came out when I was 8 and as a weird girl who loved birds and fantasy, I was 100% on board. However, adapting the first 3 books into one movie was such a bad idea.

What would’ve been funnier to me is that they still have the Poppy saying “Gosh I wish I had a sister.” The whole movie While her dad acts suspiciously nervous joke. But the sister never shows up in the movie. Leaving the audience wondering if she does. And have her show up In the possible fourth trolls movie, like three years later.

I can’t think of a whole lot of movies that have done that; maybe Naked Lunch but at least that was about the actual person that wrote the book. having not read it I wonder how much the actual book means thematically to this movie. I mean it’s a bit of a self-explanatory title but i imagine theres some other connection from such a blatantly referenced source like that.
