Manga Book Club - Pluto

Comments

hmm looks like I completely forgot this was happening well, I'll be back in a week after I've read through all of Pluto and watched this lmao

BreadBunny

Forgot that was today lol. Was gonna ask if we think Pluto would have hit the same if Gesicht kept his original Astro Boy design and nothing else changed

Evan McKee

the ending of pluto is so weird to me. this is an interesting detective manga about the top 7 robots being slowly murdered, why is the final fight suddenly about saving the world. i mean i know why, its because its an adaptation of astro boy. but i sure wish it wasn't epsilon is so hot tho. "sephiran but he looks more like a lesbian" my beloved

Okay I guess it wasn't short

Just finished Pluto! I once again procrastinated and ended up reading the whole thing in three days--but that's okay because not only it was a lot shorter than both DM and most of our One Piece readings, I also thought it being one long story from the beginning made it a lot easier of a binge read. This'll probably be a pretty short post though. Did I like it? Yes! The art was fantastic, the tone was really different and felt mostly consistent, the suspenseful nature of the story was really effective, and the message of hatred / war (which even if someone had the worst reading comprehension is definitely impossible to miss by the end) hit for me a lot. I will say I read the first volume on one day, the next five on the second day, and the last two on the third day, which made the last two volumes feel like a little bit like an epilogue to the story; Geischt's death is really the climax of Pluto as it presents itself initially, since almost all the mysteries are solved by then and Geischt's personal story isn't returned to until the final fight. I don't think this affected my opinion of the ending that much? But I definitely felt like I was reading the thematic conclusion to a story that felt mostly complete to me. I'm glad it revealed and clarified all the answers, although I think the way Bora is explained gets a little repetitive with Atom and Tenma just delivering exposition about it every five seconds towards the end. It could have been a little smoother, but I do really like the reveal of Abra being the "robot with the perfect AI who can lie" -- it and the scene where Atom lies to Geischt's wife are really good follow-ups to the original scene between Geischt and Abra (one of the best scenes imo). Even though I think Pluto is a hopeful story, it was really able to deliver a tragic story. I really liked that none of the seven robots who were targeted escaped being killed, even though it was painful to accept. It was a good set-up and payoff of dread. Good marks all around from me! Side note: I have never really been exposed to Astroboy so I definitely don't know the original story, although doing a little research into it, it's very interesting that the manga is known for being racist in its depictions of other cultures. I think turning that racist fear (the original Pluto is created by an "evil sultan") into an Iraq War parable in 2003 is actually super inspired on Urasawa's part. As person of Arab and Persian descent I raised my eyebrow a little when the Persian Central Asian Conflict was introduced, but it was handled very well.

That’s just jello

Here’s a question: what was everyone’s reaction going from Dungeon Meshi to Pluto because the art and the vibes are so different

Jack Patterson

"We're just gonna talk. :)" has an air of menace to it.
