McNulty has always been about going up against authority and try to prove to everyone that he's smarter than them. He was happier being a beat cop but as a detective, he's become slippin' Jimmy McNulty again - Willing to bend the rules to prove he's right. I like seeing senator Clay Davis on the ropes. He was always the bigger crook. Stringer Bell thought himself the smartest guy in the room, wanting to play the system and go legit (Like Vince Vaughn's character in True Detective season 2), but Stringer never saw Clay Davis coming.
