[D'sP] All The Patterns - Chapter 353
Added 2024-03-08 20:21:07 +0000 UTCDoyle slowly came to as his mind once again settled down. While he hadn’t been able to observe, the scene created by his sea of consciousness was astounding. As if the world has reverted to some primordial pre-world space from mythology. A time before the heavens and the earth were separated. The separation between the ocean, air, and land was removed creating a space of chaos, except ordered.
Yes, ordered. For at the center of it all was one triangle that with the chaos became as if a 2d shape and around it, fragments from far and wide began to crystalize onto it. And yet, the shape never grew bigger. In fact, it shrank with the passing of time. Each additional layer of instinct causes all the previous layers to fold in on themselves just a little bit tighter.
Now though, as he awakens, the ocean, air, and land once again separate out. The hardened triangle settles once again onto the sea of consciousness as it springs upward, revealing the volcano’s shape as greenery once again spreads. Then as the last piece falls into place, the three great retaining walls, Doyle snaps to being fully aware.
A quick check of the surface tells Doyle that a significant amount of time has passed. Well, significant for him at this point. Anyway, shocked at how long this [Self-Actualization]...
Doyle pauses halfway through that thought as the familiar yet unknown word passes through his mind. While trying to repeat it only results in saying “self actualization” and a few similar phrases, the actual word escapes him. It described the process so perfectly and yet with every second that passes, the word fades from his mind.
In the end, he can’t recapture that encapsulation of what he just went through and so can only turn to other things. First being a quick chat with Ally, who is more than happy that he finally woke up.
Ally shakes her head, ‘You do realize dungeons aren’t supposed to be able to sleep? Thankfully, we have the soul connection or I would have been worrying so much!’
Doyle nods, ‘Fair enough. Not that I exactly got a choice in the matter. Can you get me up to speed?’
Ally shrugs, ‘Well, people made it to your fifteenth floor, even if they didn’t get all that far within the floor itself. Though whatever you just did managed to up quite a few patterns to the point that they got pushed back out of the floor. Oh, and a couple weeks ago the town spent a ton of money on you.’
Doyle, ‘How could they spend money on me? It’s not like I need specific things to get better. Well, I guess technically better stuff would allow me to make better loot, but the actual advancement wouldn’t be the most obvious beyond maybe a few variances in a basic weapon’s shape.’
Ally nods, ‘That is normally the case. However, they went and bought an expensive little trinket. They’re hoping it will help you with the instances. How they found out about dungeon beads and specifically the “of dimensions” variety is beyond me. I guess someone got in good with their tutorial guide or they restructured the tutorial big time from what I know of them.
‘Anyway, dungeon beads are to mineral based sapients what elixirs are to animal-based sapients. Oh, and elixirs are just potions with a permanent effect. However, the dungeon bead of dimensions is an analogue to a path opening elixir. Which for the most part do not appear on the market or even in auctions.’
Doyle tilts down and dims, ‘While that sounds interesting, the fact the town could afford one means something isn’t right. Am I in debt to someone else or just deeper in debt to the System?’
Ally shakes her head, ‘This specific bead is heavily subsidized for anyone buying it to use on an eligible dungeon. Though, if you did fail to use it before a hundred years are up, then it will be forced on you and cost a good bit. Don’t worry though, from how I understand it, the System will force you to spend more reasonable resources first. Stuff like path points if you had simply not bought in time. Though yeah, you can certainly wrack up some debt to the System if you aren’t careful.’
Doyle, ‘So I assume it’s already been absorbed and will show up in my Paths?’
Ally nods, ‘Yes. Oh, and one more thing. As with any consumable that grants an effect related to Paths that is more than just cosmetic, it requires more than just physical ingredients to make. Worse, for even you to create one will require those esoteric ingredients. Which means that even with the pattern, you’re unable to make them right now.’
Doyle tilts to the side, ‘Can’t I just throw quintessence at it? From how I understand it, quintessence is literally the building blocks of everything.’
Ally, ‘Yes, but no. Quintessence, as far as True Immortals have been able to suss out, do make up literally everything including soul cores. However, making your patterns and making the esoteric part of a path potion is like the difference between molding clay and putting together a clear crystal from a pile of table salt. It is much easier if you can put that salt into water and then use a seed crystal to get it to grow just right. Right now? You do not have that seed crystal to work off of.
‘The easiest way to make a path potion is for someone with the desired path to sacrifice a piece of said path. Which, while sometimes fixable if they put in multiple paths points to repair the path, won’t always be. Besides, a path potion does not even guarantee that the person taking it will unlock that exact path.
‘A dungeon bead of dimensions is no different. Except, somehow, the System has access to a bunch of seeds for the path and isn’t afraid to hand them out. It is honestly really weird.’
Doyle’s core dims, ‘Well, I can think of any number of reasons why the system would have that and a few of them aren’t all that nice. Though I assume the actual number of them is still relatively low. Oh well, nothing I can do about it. Was there anything else of interest?’
Ally shrugs, ‘Eh, depends I guess? There are new delvers pushing deeper than ever, even if they can’t quite match those from the inner ring. Plus all the usual drama that goes on in a town. Not really my thing, but it sometimes feels like watching a non-stop melodrama mixed with one of those ridiculous romance novels. Really weird if you ask me, but when dealing with a place whose main attraction is literally a pit people fight monsters in, you’re bound to have some drama as tensions run high.’
Doyle shakes his core, ‘Not my type of thing. Never has been, not really. Though I guess that means I can spend time on going over what feels like it should be pretty foundational changes to my patterns.’
Ally nods, ‘Ace and friends did manage to be pushed out of your last floor. I haven’t been watching too closely, but when I had noticed what happened, I made sure to keep a snapshot of the before. Not that the system couldn’t have done it, but it would have been frustrating as you didn’t specifically set a point. After all, it isn’t like the changes all happened at once.’
Doyle sighs, ‘Does the system make it hard to track things like that long term on purpose? Like, why can’t I just tell it to show me all the chances between two points or some such? That shouldn’t be too hard.’
Ally smiles, ‘You’re not unreasonable for expecting that, especially not with how your world’s computers worked. Keeping track of exactly when something happens was just a matter of course. However, the system does not have infinite storage space. Should it keep track of exactly when each ant in your dungeon is grown up enough to gain the teamwork skill? When each ameba in existence is born?
‘Sure, the system will keep track of some things. Especially if they’re important, but you certainly aren’t there yet. So no, it isn’t on purpose, the system just doesn’t actually store all that much.’
Doyle, ‘Then how does it keep track of all those path effects and such? Like, I have paths that affect not just me and my monsters, but the town outside as well.’
Ally shrugs, ‘By not keeping track of it? The system’s cheat isn’t keeping track of everything, but rather an all powerful ability to detect things and look at souls. Because all that path stuff? That’s yours. This isn’t a computer system where everything is stored on the drive and the system has to make everything work.
‘Your soul has your paths and they just work. Maybe if you were a normal sapient and went to another dimension, there might be a problem that a system could smooth over. However, you’re a dungeon and an extra-dimensional one at that. Could there be friction between you and another dimension? Sure, but that wouldn’t change you like it would others.’
Doyle nods, ‘Fair enough. I guess I’m just used to stories where the system is some all knowing mcguffin. Oh well, let’s take a look at my growth. Pull up that snapshot and we’ll compare it to my current status. The system should be able to do at least that, right?’
Ally laughs, ‘Very much so. Though it will refuse for things unrelated to a person’s status. Both its creator and the system itself does not want the system to be reduced to a fancy word processor for everyone in the universe.’
Then, after Ally brings up her snapshot, Doyle instructs the system to compare it to his current status.

Comments
There are Paths for having certain groups of patterns at a high level. Hell, there are paths just for having enough of a certain type of pattern. I will note though that level 99 is not a high level. Taking into account the broader universe, that is about the level of a journeyman in the skill. While I won't say it always works on this scale, but things tend to go by magnitudes. So 10 means someone who just started training in a skill, 100 is someone experienced in it, and 1000 would be a master of the skill. Now, I won't say that 100 is a magical breakpoint as skill levels only represent what the system understands of a persons understanding and skill. It is possible for someone with a skill for a craft to make a masterwork. After all, the number of skills you can have is limited and so someone with a hobby for wood carving might not have actually fit the skill in, but still be good at it. What having the actual skill does is allow for a more straightforward progression and easier access to what are basically supernatural results. However, if you take someone who has never done a thing before and they pick up the skill for a craft right away, around level 100 is when they start being able to create masterworks, with 1000 being the point where if someone takes their time and has decent equipment and material, will be able to almost always make a masterwork. And of course there is no level cap on skills. In fact, there isn't really all that much difficulty scaling for higher skill levels, though bottlenecks do exist (Doyle is at one right now) and can be for many reasons. The difficulty in raising a skill level tends to be more from the fact that leveling requires you to put in effort to advance and after you have hundreds or thousands of skill levels, not much will challenge you unless you really search for it or get lucky. Not every master blacksmith will have some hero stumble into their shop with a mythical material and an ancient broken sword they want reforged with said material. Mostly they'll have the rich and powerful coming to them with normal, if rare, materials to make masterworks out of for themselves, their children, or their people. Oh, and on a note of rarity. There are basically two steps. Any item you can buy with system coins, no matter how "rare" it is claimed to be, is just a normal item. To truly be considered rare, you're looking at items that basically only get traded for other equally rare items or stuff like favors.

2024-03-09 20:29:23 +0000 UTCThe monsters are not cheaper. While it is possible to make them cheaper, that tends to come from paths or world view altering experiences. Higher level patterns do get you more bang for your buck, but in the sense that the monsters will be stronger for the same amount of points. Which is what we see happening in the last couple chapters. This only goes so far though, because a large part of how it works is altering the way the stats express themselves. Doyle can actually do this out side of leveling patterns with his adjustment points. However, using the adjustment points is like outlining a general trend or roughing out a shape from a block of wood, while levels in a pattern is like adding the details and sanding it smooth. The important detail with that is that the two work together. So if you rough out a new shape with the adjustment points, the pattern levels will automatically smooth things out. The only way it doesn't transfer is if enough changes have been made to create a new pattern. Though even then, some of levels will transfer.

2024-03-09 20:12:40 +0000 UTCThey will never "confirm" that he is an awakened dungeon. They will suspect, they will believe, they might even in their heart of heart's know, but it won't ever be something where they'll outright be like, "Hey, the dungeons a person so we should probably go have a chat with it". Maybe they'll have chats in the dungeon that happen to pertain to it, but Doyle and Ace will NEVER speak directly to each other during the main story because the one hard rule I set for this story when I first started writing it was that the dungeon and the town would be separate. At the time, it seemed that every dungeon core story just ended up with the dungeon being just another guy in town after getting an avatar. Not to say I don't enjoy those types of stories. However, I feel it removes some important things I enjoy about dungeon core novels as a genre. Have I since seen other people take on this challenge in different manners and succeed? Yes. However, that isn't how I'm writing this story. So, while for many things I can't give a hard ruling on what will happen, this I can.

2024-03-09 20:02:55 +0000 UTCTo be fair, he wasn't getting rewarded for it all that much. Though it also has to do with how rushed he has been. Most dungeons tend to take much longer between floors than he has, at least after the first five or so floors (basically up to the first boss).

2024-03-09 19:57:27 +0000 UTCIs there a path for having a number of patterns this high level? Another broad general monster path is always good. I imagine creating hordes with the now cheaper monsters certainly would.

2024-03-09 00:50:46 +0000 UTCMonsters should be cheaper now, so Doyle’s point problem as only gotten worst, right? I wonder how many more monsters can now fit on a floor. Time for another floor update?

2024-03-09 00:14:56 +0000 UTCI wonder when will the town folk figure out Doyle is an awaken dungeon. Maybe it's because of a lack of comparison to an unawaked dungeon the strange things Doyle do, like changing the floors and how they are put together with a clear definition that it has been designed by someone will put them to think things through
