Reaction Dr. Who Series 9 - Episode 7

Reaction Dr. Who Series 9 - Episode 7

Yeah I agree, those Zygons are such an interesting enemy. Their abilities to trick people (including us viewers :) ) Is great for a show like Dr. Who. Hahaha who was that "someone" that rated the episode "Day of the Doctor" a 1000003.5? Do I know that person? :D :D True, Clara hasn´t been in this episode either. Well not much at least...Hmmmm interesting.... I love Doctor Disco :D :D Thank you so much for that Comic story picture :D I put the picture in the Youtube cut of that video. :) That´s an interesting detail about UNIT and the Zygons. Thannk you for that backround info :) Yeah I dungoofed the rating of that episode. I blame it all on Amazon, cause they always screw up their episode numbers and sometimes I forget that and fall for it. It´s totally not my fault for not reading the Title while talking about it before I look at the rating :D :D Thank you for reminding me that I rated the episode a 7.7. That´s very needed :D

Nicologik

Haha yeah that opening was a surprise :D

"Clara, Jac, you stay here. This is your country. Protect it from the scary monsters - and also from the Zygons.", The Doctor, "The Zygon Invasion" This is a fine setup episode for this two-part story. The use of the human forms of the soldiers' loved-ones to disuade them from taking action is interesting and chilling. I probably should worry that the Zygons take these human forms without physically having the original human - "that's not what the original Zygons did" - and so downgrade the episode for doing this. And I do. But I didn't care with the Queen Elizabeth duplicate in "The Day of the Doctor" and I've heard that someone once rated that episode at 1000003.5! BTW: if we're keeping track, this is the second episode in a row when Clara doesn't appear much. Most of the time in this episode, Jenna is actually playing "Bonnie" - Clara's duplicate. "Did you just call yourself 'Doctor Disco'?", Bonnie, "The Zygon Invasion" I like all the "Doctor Disco", "Doctor Funkenstein" and the guitar playing. It's fun. BTW: I didn't know this until I read it just now - apparently, there was a Doctor Who comic story that showed the Doctor actually wearing some question-mark underwear. You learn something new every day. https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/tardis/images/2/26/Eighth_Doctor_question_mark_boxers.jpg "There was an attempted Zygon invasion before in the 70s, 80s.", Kate, "The Zygon Invasion" That's a really interesting line. Obviously, it's a reference to a Classic Who episode. But it is more than that. There is a date contradition in Classic Who UNIT episodes shown in the 1970s - sometimes we're told that the episodes take place in the current time (i.e. the 1970s), and sometimes we're meant to understand that the time period is about ten years in the future (i.e. the 1980s). So this line from Kate "... before in the 70s, 80s" is a wink to the fans that the program makers know about that contradiction and so can't date that Zygon episode exactly. As Jenny mentioned above, you viewed the rating for the second part. This is one time when just showing the initial letters of the title let us down because the second part has EXACTLY the same initial letters. It's not a big deal though - you can be just as surprised by the first episode's rating next time. I won't update the rating page with either score until next week. For reference, you rated this episode at 7.7

Going to comment more when we get to the second part but just wanted to say I love Clara's look in this story. Also that opening from Day of the Doctor is fantastic, couldn't wait to see your reaction to that.

I guess you´re right about the judging of the episode. I think you can´t really judge it without having seen the second part. It´s as if you would judge only the first half of a movie. Which noone would ever do. I picked up on the hint, right before she changed. When she talked about bombing them all. Clara would never say that, but I am looking forward to the rewatch, and seeing how many clues I missed. I thought that all Zygons are part human as well, but I´d have to go back and rewatch the episode to be sure. I agree, the soldier scene was so well done. I liked it a lot. The endnig is great yes, I really hope that the second part lives up to the expectations, that this ending is promissing. Because my expectations are quite high right now. Haha that´s so funny. People are weird sometimes :D :D I already suspected that this name thing would be real. :D

Nicologik

Thank you for letting me know about your opinion. I´m glad I´m not alone with this one. :)

You hate the guitar bits? Awww what a pity that you do not like them. I agree with you about the Osgood return. I really like her and seeing her dying again wasn´t a good experience. :/ I liked series 8 very much, in hindsight. Series 9 though is rather mixed. Some really great episodes, but some that I don´t really like. But I can´t wait to get to this series´finale. I hope we´ll see Missy again, cause I miss her so much :)

Nicologik

Oh no, I didn´t notice :/ Thanks for letting me know. I´m gonna look up the rating for this episode in the next video. By the way I´m feeling better already, thank you :)

Well it looks like it may be me who is in the minority here because I absolutely love this episode and I always thought that everybody else did too. I don't think that it is simply a matter of judging the whole story and liking this more in retrospect. I like the clues that are seeded that Clara is not behaving in character and the way that (in true Moffat style) we are immediately given something else to think about before we process the information completely. I like the way the story carries on from both Day of the Doctor and from Death in Heaven with the details of the "perfect truce" explained. And the fact that when we saw Osgood killed by Missy, she might have been the original/real one or might have been her Zygon duplicate. Osgood of course would say that it makes no difference. By the way, my own understanding of what Kate said about both versions being both Zygon and human is that it applied only to Osgood. I don't know if that is how others took it though. Love the grim dilemma for the soldier who sees what looks like his mother although saying that makes me sound cruel. It's just a brilliantly dramatic scene. Love the ending when Bonnie reveals that she is not Clara to the Doctor and tells him that everyone is dead before firing the missile. I do always feel rather uneasy though about the fact that I find evil Clara (aka Bonnie) rather more attractive/sexy than I should. Yes, of course it is still Jenna but it's Jenna playing a role that in theory shouldn't have that effect at all. Oh and, yes, Truth Or Consequences is the name of a real town in New Mexico and they really did change their name from Hot Springs to the name of a US radio game show to win a competition to have the show broadcast from their town.

I'm basically in agreement with you on this one. Although entertaining, it's all set-up but little actual plot progression. Nonetheless, it has neat callbacks scattered throughout. Obviously the Zygons - but also the pre-title sequence, the question marks on the collar, and (I don't think you spotted it) the First Doctors portrait at UNIT HQ. It's all rather fun,but very difficult to rate as it stands (so far).

A decent but not amazing first episode. Starts strongly. I hate the bit with the electric guitar, it's like fingers down a blackboard for me when Capaldi's Doctor does this sort of thing! I also have a dislike for Madeupistan settings. Overall I don't think the episode does anything majorly wrong, but much of it could've been improved upon with subtle tweaks. "Clara" being revealed to be "Bonnie" was well done. I kind of hated Osgood being brought back for "Death in Heaven" only to be killed off, but obviously in hindsight they were seeding things for this episode! I found Series 8 a very frustrating experience because of how the Doctor, Clara, and their relationship were characterised at various times. Up to this point I'd found Series 9 a frustrating experience for a different reason: I felt that "The Witch's Familiar" was a sharp improvement on the opening episode, but "Before the Flood" had been hugely disappointing compared to its first part, and the third two-parter was pretty "meh". Which way will this story now go...?

Hi Nicole I have to point out that you were looking at the rating for the second part which was 8.4 I will let you check for yourself what it actually was for this one. As for the episode I agree this was a little slow and that it was setting up for part 2. Most of what I want to say about them both together I will leave until next time. I hope you feel better soon. xx
