50 Year Anniversary Party today :D :D

Hi everyone, today we celebrate this wonderful show, what an episode. This one is very dear to my heart, and I´m happy to share this journey with you.

I´m sorry that my mic, especially during the review didn´t have the quality that you are used to have. It´s not too bad but it blocked some s sounds sometimes, cause the mic programme I used was on the wrong level. Like I said it´s not too bad, but since it might be annoying I wanted to point it out :)

50 Year Anniversary Party today :D :D

I can tell 😁 it's always a treat seeing David 😁

Hot Space 🇬🇧

Yes this episode was from Amazon, but strangely all the previous episodes were from Amazon as well. I don´t understand why this on gave you troubles. I´m sorry, I hope it was watchable anyways. Thank you for sending me the clip :)

Nicologik

Oh I wish I had access to this episode in 3D. I would have reacted to it in 3D if I had the opportunity :) Maybe I´m going to buy one of those DVD´s if they are still sold of course. I don´t know that by now. I´m sorry the framerate was different for you. I already suspected something like this could happen. That´s why I let you know that I´m watching the Amazon version. So anyone who had Amazon could have watched it over there. I wonder why it happened though, cause the usual episode I watch, I watch them on Amazon as well. Hmmm.... It was great to see this spoiler free. I wouldn´t have wanted this any other way. What a great surprise seeing David and Rose again :D Thank you for letting me know about some of the Classic eastereggs. I like the Vortex manipulator code one :D "Never cruel or cowardly. Never give up. Never give in."What a great quote :) Love this one :) "They're you. They're what you become if you destroy Gallifrey. The man who regrets, and the man who forgets." This one as well, gives me the chills just thinking about this scene :)

Nicologik

Ok, if anyone is interested ... The 3D disc has an episode length of 1:19:53 regardless of the 2D or 3D setting. The 50th Anniversary (2D) disc is also 1:19:53. The timer on Nicole's screen showed a time of 1:16:40 which is in line with the BBC, IMDB and Wikipedia duration of 77 minutes. Of course, I needed to put the 3D disc into the player to get this info and I "accidentally" played the full episode while wearing the glasses - oops.

Andrew Vignaux

Thank you so much Stephen :) I wish I could have watched this episode in a cinema as well :) If you ever find that time machine, just make a quick stop in Germany before you go back to the shooting of this episode please :D :D I thought the idea of the war doctor was brilliant even before beeing told how Moffat invented him. Knowing this now, makes that story even more special in my eyes. This man is genious. I would have crumbled under so much pressure and he just comes up with this unbelivable storyline :) I wish I would have known that it was Tom Baker right at the start of the scene. I could have enjoyed the scene so much more. But I was constantly trying to find out who this actor was, and even when I thought I got it right, I didn´t belive my own thoughts :D Thank you for clarifying the Elisabeth situation :) Oh I didn´t recognize that Clara was working at that very school from the Classic episode. Thanks for letting me know. :)

Nicologik

I understand why you have been looking forward to this. It´s an exceptional episode :) It´s so sad that the BBC did spoil almost every single important info whenever there was a special episode. Why would they do that, I don´t understand. I agree David and Matt were really having fun with this episode :) It showed :) I did catch that joke about the door, I just didn´t mention it cause they were talking so much and I didn´t want to talk over the dialogue. :) I´ve never heard of Gavin and Stacey before. Wow, you are a fan for 57 years? I can´t even begin to imagine how this episode must have felt for you then. Wow :) Haha my cats always want the bed for themselves as well :D :D

Nicologik

I get why this is your number 1. It´s mine as well :) I wish I could watch this one in a cinema. That would be dream come true :) I can´t really tell you wether I did notice the moment in the editing, cause there were several things that I just picked up on while editing. :D

Nicologik

Thank you for the clarification about Rose. I didn´t quite catch that. But it makes more sense that way as well :) Also thanks for letting me know, that I wasn´t suppose to recognize Elisabeth. That´s always a frustrating situation, not to know wether I should or shouldn´t know a person :) Wow your comment really is full of important information, thank you so much. Knowing that I was right about the doctor changing into Christopher is a relief as well :) I do understand why David would go with his favorite line, but I don´t like it haha :D What an interesting behind the scenes story, of how this episode was produced. I really belive that this one put much pressure on anyone who worked on it, but especially for our writers. I can´t even imagine the stress they had to endure, to get all of this up and running. And to have the idea of a war doctor, in the midst of all this trouble, makes it even more meaningful to me. :) Wow I can´t belive someone would watch this episode for the first time and actually not like it. Seems impossible for me. I´m so glad you do like it nowadays though :)

Nicologik

Well, in my eyes the doctors 10 and 11 together in one episode, would have been enough already. I could watch those two bantering for hours without getting tired of it haha :D But the finale was a great addition to an already wonderful episode. And I liked the black and white start as well. What a great callback :) I didn´t know this story about Tom Baker. It´s sad that he felt beeing recognized as the doctor was annoying to him. :/ I can understand, that fans didn´t like to hear that. But I´m glad he did make an appearance in this episode, although he didn´t seem to play a doctor. :) I can´t tell what moment you are talking about. To be honest during editing the episode, I noticed a few things I haven´t noticed while watching it for the reaction :D

Nicologik

I´m sooo happy you enjoyed the reaction to this episode, it was a very special one. I felt it right away :) It is my favorite episode as well. And it´s gonna be really hard for any other episode to even get close to this one :) You are so right, thinking back at my start with Matt and looking at me now, what a difference ! I never thought he would grow on me so much :) David in HD is the best David :D :D The episode is great indeed, loved watching it so much. So many emotions :) And I agree with you about the doctors personalities. 10 and 11 are so close, but each person has their own charcter traits as well. But together they´re unbeatable :) I haven´t forgotten the Fez scene in Good Omens :) Wow Chris really didn´t appreciate the potential this show offered him. :/ I know what you mean, when you say my reaction gives you the feeling of watching it for the first time yourself. It´s the same for me with Buffy. :) And I can´t wait to watch other reactors react to this episode as well. :) Thank you, you are so kind :)

Nicologik

Thank you :) This is my favorite episode of Dr. Who as well now :) Seeing David again was the best feeling ever :)

Nicologik

Odd. I thought that was the set that was mentioned in what I read! Perhaps what was meant was that a different framerate was needed for the 3D version, and by accident a 2D version with that same framerate was used by accident? 🙃

Andrew Gwilliam

I also had a fps difference, by the way, Nicole mentioned that this 50th anniversary video is from Amazon. I also wait for this episode with all my reactors, but especially with Nicole, as he and I are both huge David Tennant and Billie Piper fans! I can finally post spoiler-free my favorite video clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZAO6E2x9xs (The Moment is Coming || Doctor Who BBC)

monguru (Rose Tyler fan)

Thanks for the info - it actually rings a vague bell. However, the copy I was using to sync with the reaction was not my 3D one but a disc from the "50th Anniversary Collector's Edition" box-set (Blu-ray with all of the anniversary programmes - including the Brian Cox thing). That was a non-3D set that came out about a year later. And that's the one that had a different frame rate for the reaction. I'll check whether my 3D one (in 2D mode) works. Interestingly, I used a disc from same box-set to watch "An Adventure in Space and Time" last week and that sync'd ok.

Andrew Vignaux

Oh wow I wish I could have experienced Classic Who back when it first came out but unfortunately I'm too young ahaha. I'm only 18 and got introduced to the show when I was literally only about 3, so I grew up with New Who and David as my first Doctor and he has remained my number 1 ever since then. Peter Capaldi is a solid second place for me though.

KrispyKrushems

I've had a quick Google, and it seems that in order to produce a 3D version on the commercially released discs it was necessary to alter the frame rate. The BBC were offering free replacement discs, but that's probably no longer available, and I'm guessing you'd lose the 3D option anyway.

Andrew Gwilliam

I guess some of us never grow up. I remember watching the second Dr battling the yeti in London’s tube which was terrifying. I must have been around 10 years old. I’m 67 in December and I love dr who as much today as back then. The arrival of new who in 2005 was so exciting and I have stuck with all the doctors even if some weren’t as good as others. I’m a sci fi nerd so Star Trek is another fave. Matt Smith for some reason edges all the others as my no.1 not sure why cos when David left I thought the show would never be the same again. My favourite classic doctor is Patrick Troughton I guess because he was the first one I ever saw.

Jenny Smyth

"Good afternoon. I'm looking for the Doctor.", "Well, you've certainly come to the right place.", The War Doctor and the Tenth Doctor, "The Day of the Doctor" This episode was simulcast around the world - the spoiler potential being so high - and it was also shown simultaneously in the movie theatres. Even better, was the stereoscopic-3D filming so you could wear the glasses and see the 3D-effect. This was most amazing when you looked at the framed pictures because you could see the 3D-effect inside the pictures - just as the characters could. I have a copy of the 3D-version on disc so it's always a question about whether I watch the snazzy 3D-version or the flat 2D-one. A quick check, showed me that you had decided not to record your reaction in 3D as well - so I decided not to wear the glasses this time. [Joke] BTW my disc copy of the episode was playing at a different rate to the video you were reacting to. I had to change the speed of the reaction to keep it in sync. Did anyone else have this issue? But isn't it great to see this spoiler-free? I was spoiler-free and I didn't know we'd see David or Billie and it was wonderful to see them in this story. We get another motor-cycle (and a horse, actually) going through the TARDIS doors - we've seen that a lot recently. Points to Nicole for recognizing the scarf that Osgood is wearing. The scene in the Black Archive when the real Osgood and Zygon Osgood understand which one is which - and don't say anything is very nice. The return of the Zygons as monster-of-the week was interesting. They had appeared in Classic Who but they were actually almost better known for just being mentioned rather than actual appearances in the show. e.g. Sarah Jane refers to an adventure with them in "School Reunion". There are lots and lots of Easter-eggs for the fans. We see a policeman walking past the Totter's Lane sign and then we see Coal Hill School - references to the first Classic Who episode. There's a reference on the sign to Ian, the male schoolteacher companion, of the first story too. The code name "Cromer" is a reference to an incident in Classic Who. Captain Jack's vortex manipulator's access code that Matt was carving into the wall was "1716231163" which if you unpack it is "17:16 on the 23rd of November 1963" - the date and time the first episode was shown. The list goes on-and-on! Elizabeth I's "weak and feeble woman" line, if you're not aware, is taken from history when the real life Queen Elizabeth gave a speech to the English troops prior to fighting the Spainish. The shot of the photo boards is enough to melt Classic Doctor Who fans into small puddles on the ground. You can go back and try to spot everyone and still miss photos - how wonderful! And it's nice to have the character of Kate Stewart back - so the fans will recall her much-loved father the Brigadier. The whole solution to resolving the Time War, turning out to be an echo of the break out of the cell with the sonic is good writing by Moffat. "Never cruel or cowardly. Never give up. Never give in.", The Doctors, "The Day of the Doctor" The promise that the Doctors state is based on one of the Classic Who's Script Editor's books - as their philosophy of writing the character of the Doctor. The "never cruel" line is one I go back to when I feel writers have crossed the line (as I did, if you recall, with the death of Solomon in "Dinosaurs on a Spaceship"). And it was so nice to see Tom Baker Doctor on screen with Matt. They're you. They're what you become if you destroy Gallifrey. The man who regrets, and the man who forgets.", The Moment, "The Day of the Doctor"

Andrew Vignaux

I have to point out that it baffles me that you've been a fan for 57 years, I've only been a fan of the show since 2008. I love seeing fans who have been around for SO long like that is amazing that you've stuck around after all this time, and I'm sure, quite a few other people too.

KrispyKrushems

You make a very good point about Tom Baker. He's far from my favourite Classic Doctor either (for staying in the role too long, together with all the problems that go with that) - however, for most people he is THE Doctor of the Classic era; in the same way that Tenant (also far from my favourite!) is perceived as THE Doctor of the Revived era. As a result, having him appear in the 50th Anniversary was really something of a triumph.

Ian Smith

Great reaction! I absolutely love this episode and I wish I had gone to watch it at the cinema. Although if I had a time machine I would go to Trafalgar Square back at the time they started the filming of Matt hanging on the the underside of the Tardis. The one small thing I would change is the gunk that the fake Kate Stewart spews out of her mouth before turning back into a Zygon. Didn't enjoy that at all and I wonder why they did it. Apart from that rather small point it is (for me) as near perfect as any episode has been. Astonishing considering that Steven Moffat had started writing a story to include Christopher Ecclestone and only invented the War Doctor when he realised that he had a gap to fill. I understand that he was panicking quite a bit at this stage! Seeing clips of all the Doctors appearing on screens near the end when they are all saving Gallifrey together is a favourite moment but seeing Tom Baker at the very end was the moment that actually made us cheer when I watched at my sister's house. It still gives me goose bumps and the energy level seems to go up instantly. The Curator says "you might find yourself revisiting a few" meaning faces. So I think the idea is that he is a future Doctor with one of the old faces. But clearly he lived longer than the original Fourth Doctor did! The Queen in the Werewolf episode was Victoria but we have seen Queen Elizabeth I before in Who story. it was at the end of the Shakespeare Code when she appears at the door, seems furiously angry and shouts "off with his head!" I guess this is an older version who can't forgive him for not returning after marrying her. Actually, David does mention Elizabeth I when he is talking the the Ood at the beginning of his final story. Maybe that means that his part of this story happens after The Waters of Mars but before The End of Time. Clara works at Coal Hill School! The one that the First Doctor's granddaughter went to! Another lovely reference to the show's history. Oh and two trivial things. Billie Piper (Rose) is the conscience of the Moment. That's the weapon that the War Doctor is going to use. I think you said that she was the conscience of the Tardis. And yes, the war Doctor does turn into Chris. That's not a spoiler. You can just see his face at the very end of the regeneration.

At last the 50th anniversary. I have been looking forward to this episode, for ages, cos I knew that seeing David and Billie would freak you out. Like nearly all dr who episodes I watched this live as it went out on tv. Of course we knew David was going to be in it, there was a lot of publicity about his appearance at the time. So we didn’t get the same surprise as you did. (Although you were expecting to see David) it was still a thrill watching your reaction to his first scene. The episode itself was pretty great I really enjoyed the chemistry between David and Matt. They looked as if they really enjoyed themselves. Clara is great in this. I wasn’t sure if you missed the joke about them not trying the door to their cell, or not. It’s one of many funny moments in the film. The lady who played Elizabeth 1 is Joanna Page, her best known role is a comedy called Gavin and Stacey, also starring and co written by James Corden. Don’t know if you have heard of it in Germany. It’s pretty funny. John Hurt you may or may not know is a highly respected actor of many many plays and films. He died in 2017 but he had a long career, and I think he did a great job alongside our favourite boys. For me the inclusion of Tom Baker at the end seemed a little unnecessary. I was not a big fan of Tom Bakers doctor. He played the role for a long time and I think I got a bit tired of him. He is many peoples favourite, and his cameo at the end was clearly a big fan service. Nothing wrong with that of course. This was a 50th anniversary so naturally there are going to be lots of nods to classic and new who in it. Having said that I enjoyed the film so much that Toms bit at the end made even me smile. I started watching Doctor who early in the second doctors tenure, so I have been a fan for 57 years or so at this point. Anyway this was a lot of fun I got through a lot of tissues this afternoon I currently don’t have a couch as I am waiting for my new one to be delivered, I lay on my bed to watch it and my cat who sleeps all day on the bed was not impressed with me.

Jenny Smyth

This is my favorite story of New Who. number 1 out of 140. I actually got to watch this at the cinema which was really cool. So may great moments. There was one moment you didn't get, although I owuldn't have expected you to, but, depending on when you edit this video, I'm wondering if you'll pick up on it when you see it again.

Jade Ellis

Billie Piper wasn't playing the interface of the Tardis; she was playing the interface of the Moment, the sentient weapon that the Doctor steals from the Time Lords early on in the episode. Basically, she's the weapon's conscience, projected so that the War Doctor is forced to fully think about what he intends to do with the weapon. We've not seen Elizabeth I at this point in her life (i.e. played by this actor) before. We did briefly see a much older Elizabeth I at the end of the Shakespeare episode (the one with the witches) in Series 3, where she's looking for him to have him executed for something he's apparently done in her past; now we know that she's grown old resenting this mysterious man for abandoning her immediately after their wedding! The scene with the three Doctors discussing the sonic screwdriver doing calculations over centuries also lays the seed for later on in the episode when the many different Doctors have been doing the calculations to save Gallifrey. It's not surprising you weren't entirely certain whether the War Doctor regenerated into "the Christopher Doctor" as it's not as clear as it could be on screen. But yes, the War Doctor did regenerate into the Ninth Doctor. Because Christopher Eccleston declined to come back, they had to create the scene as best as they could, with the footage they had from 2005. I only heard recently that Steven Moffat had David Tennant's last line in this be "I don't want to go" again, because he didn't want to change what his final line was in the show. Whenever a Tennant fan sees this episode for the first time, they always want to throw something at Moffat for getting him to say that line again! But it seems to have been driven by Moffat's respect for RTD. I can't remember if Steven Moffat was also still making "Sherlock" at this time, but the stress involved in writing and organising this anniversary special (on top of the regular episodes) was huge, and he's said it pushed him close to a nervous breakdown. The BBC wanted to make a big thing of the anniversary, the promotion for it was massive, and the executives were taking a lot more interest in the anniversary special than they would for a normal episode. There was of course the further uncertainty about which actors might be in it! Christopher Eccleston did meet up with Moffat to discuss the possibility, but Eccleston's past experience with the BBC was still too raw an experience (most infamously, when they announced in 2005 that he'd left, they made up a quote from him that he had to threaten legal action over). In the last few years Eccleston has begun to engage with fandom in a more public fashion (such as attending conventions as a speaking guest) and he's said that he watched this special with his two children and loved what Moffat did with the War Doctor. Creativity and being true to a character are very important things to Eccleston. It's rumoured that the BBC's executives refused to use Paul McGann in the special once Eccleston declined to appear in it, because they didn't think he was a big enough "name". Without the Eighth or Ninth Doctors, what could Moffat do? Fortunately he came up with the idea of a "War Doctor" which for me at least works brilliantly. I don't know how many actors were considered or approached to play the part, but John Hurt said in interviews that he was contacted very close to when they were going to film it all. When this special first aired, I was expecting a much darker episode because of how "The Name of the Doctor" ended. And I think I had some personal stuff going on. So I was disappointed at the time. But I've since come to love it! It's funny, and moving, and clever. There are lots of references to things from the classic era, and I've never had a problem with it not featuring classic Doctors as main characters because none of those actors still alive at the time looked like they did when they played the title character; even David Tennant only just about gets away with it. I loved the way they found a way to bring back Tom Baker, though. He'd played the Doctor for the greatest number of years, a number of his stories are considered to be the best, he was easily one of the most popular Doctors back in the twentieth century, and his Doctor was the best known version of the character in the US. The Zygons were a very unexpected classic villain to bring back, but a welcome one. Most of my criticisms of the episode are trivial, with the partial exception of one thing that I won't comment on now. Pretty much a 10 out of 10 from me.

Andrew Gwilliam

The first time I watched this with family and friends, we had just had a 50th Anniversary watch-along of An Unearthly Child (episode 1); so you can imagine the gasps when this story commenced with the original titles, and a recreation of An Unearthly Child's opening scene - complete with the I.M. Foreman sign and Coal Hill School! Very clever, and meaningful. I was a little put out as the story progressed that much of the 50th Special was more concerned with celebrating the recent (7 years or so) past, than the full 50 - well, apart from that opening scene, of course; and having the Brig's daughter in the story; and the Zygons (Classic series monsters); and the photograph of Susan; and probably a LOAD of other Classic call-backs as well - because what I wanted to see was ALL the Doctors together! It felt only fitting for the 50th Anniversary. Don't get me wrong - having the War Doctor,10 and 11 bantering was fine and entertaining; but it just didn't feel enough. And then Moffat gave us that Finale. And all was forgiven. And then he gave us Tom Baker. And I was in tears. A word about Tom Baker. He had initially been approached to return for a 20th Anniversary Special, and had agreed; but had changed his mind just a few weeks before shooting was about to commence, declaring he was never having anything more to do with the show ever again, because he was fed up being identified ONLY as the Doctor by the general public - causing a lot of gnashing of teeth among fans (as well as fury from the production team, who now had to scrap everything that had been written!!) Subsequently, seeing him appear in the 50th Anniversary was mind-blowing. (Is he playing the Doctor, though? Clearly not the 4th, as he looked FAR too old. Fan theories abound!) He has since returned to the role for the BigFinish audio drama's; probably because they provide him with a healthy pension :) Incidentally, you may have missed an interesting little moment during the "all the Doctors reunite" sequence; but that's understandable. So did I, on first viewing.

Ian Smith

THIS IS THE ONE EPISODE I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR EVER SINCE I FOUND YOU IN SERIES 4 LAST YEAR! This is my number 1 all time favourite episode in the entire show and AHH I love it ahaha. I remember you absolutely despising Matts Doctor just after David regenerated into him and now look at you! ahahaha. What an achievement, a show going on for FIFTY, now coming up to 60 years this year! I was so excited to see your reaction to David coming back since I know how much you love him, its so weird seeing him in HD quality ahaha, same with Billie Piper as Rose or The Moment. But also omg this episode never fails to get me emotional, especially when all the Doctors come together to freeze Gallifrey, the amount of chills and tears I get from that scene.. I absolutely adore the dynamic between the 10th and 11th Doctors, you can 100% tell that they're the same person but slightly different in terms of personality. Not to mention that they're hilarious together. That reminds me, there was a Doctor Who reference in Good Omens 2 that you wouldn't have gotten because you hadn't seen this episode yet. It's where Crowley puts on the Fez in Episode 5, in this episode, the 10th Doctor puts on the Fez when 10 and 11 first meet. The old man who called himself The Curator at the end, was in fact Tom Baker who played the 4th Doctor. Apparently, before casting John Hurt as the War Doctor, they were originally going to bring back Christopher Eccleston who played the 9th Doctor. But I believe there were some conflicts and Chris wanted a certain script so he didn't do it. This episode actually aired in Cinemas worldwide, I never got to experience it in the Cinema because I was watching it at home with the family but I WISH I could have experienced it in the Cinema, it would have been amazing. I know for a fact I'll be coming back to this reaction a hell of a lot because of how much I love this episode and your reaction to it. Watching you watch this for the first time made me feel like it was MY first time watching it all over again and I loved every second of it. You get so unbelievably emotionally invested in this show just like I do which is something you don't see all too often in reaction channels, and I love it so much!

KrispyKrushems

Great Reaction! I had the same reaction as you when I saw Billie and especially when I saw David I was screaming like mad. 😂 Day of the doctor is one of my all time favourite DW episodes. David and Matt work together so well along with John Hurt. RIP John Hurt. Once again great reaction ❤️
