Cassandra
Year 819 | Month 1 | Day 3
Several hours later
I collapse into a bloody pile of sweat and… well… blood onto the dark grass of the forest floor right after getting the EXP from killing the direwolf in front of me.
“Nice job! And here I was thinking that you couldn’t kill them without relying on your little life stealing trick!” the old man shouts as he appears out of nowhere a few meters away from me.
I simply glance at him before muttering, “I think I hate you,” and falling onto my back on the ground.
The old man simply chuckles at my words as I focus on letting my MP flow into my clothes, repairing them back to how they were the day I got them.
Which is a really neat trick, and I’m glad the old man taught me how to do it, but it doesn’t change the fact that my clothes are being ripped to shreds every time I fight.
The damned bastard kept bringing me to fight direwolf after direwolf until I could show him that I could fight them without relying on my Claws of Wrath skill to make it a battle of attrition.
Which I can understand, since I obviously won’t always be able to do that, but it doesn’t mean I have to like it.
I probably would have run away from him by now – assuming that’d even be possible with his teleportation skill, because apparently that System restriction doesn’t apply to his skills – if it weren’t for the fact that I know that everything he’s teaching me is beneficial to my survival.
Even if I don’t actually know why he’s teaching a random stranger.
The old man in question walks right up to me and begins staring straight down at me with three fingers held out as he speaks, “Let’s see, you learned about skills, missions, and Tiers earlier,” He then pulls out a fourth finger while adding, “you learned how much EXP a living being gives you, which is how much?”
I groan in my head at this but answer anyways by writing the stupid formula on the ground next to me, strictly because I know he won’t shut up if I don’t. Nor will he give me a healing elixir. Which I really need right now.
2*n*((2*T)/2)
“And what does n and T stand for?” he asks in the same tone of voice the royal tutors would use back at home.
“n represents the level of the enemy, while T represents their Tier,” I mutter, still patiently waiting for the man to heal my wounds before I bleed out in the grass.
I never expected to be using the math my tutors have been teaching me for years on some sort of nigh-omnipotent System.
The old man nods his head with a faint look of satisfaction on his face before he pulls an elixir out of his pocket and undoes the top.
Right as I think he’s going to pour it on me, he pauses and asks, “What will you do if you run into a being who’s a higher Tier than you?”
This time I do groan out loud, only to get kicked in the shoulder for it, causing even more blood to flow out with plenty of pain along with it.
Ow.
“Escape, and if that’s not possible, then negotiate,” I mumble through the pain.
He nods again and pours the elixir all over me, causing my wounds to quickly begin sealing themselves up.
I let out a sigh of relief once the pain vanishes before lying in place for another minute with my eyes closed.
Even when I feel the old man’s hand for some reason touch my forehead I completely ignore it due to my lack of the ability to care right now.
“Well, I’ll be leaving soon,” he suddenly says, making me slowly open my eyes to see him looking at the strange device I’ve seen him using from time to time.
When I asked before, he mentioned that it was a sort of telepathic communication tool, and that due to the lack of advanced technology on Midgard, it was very limited in what it can do, with a large price to pay for each time he uses it.
Which makes me wonder why he’s using it right now.
However, right as I’m about to ask about it, he pulls another elixir out of his bag – one of a different color this time – and pours it on me. Soon after that my eyelids begin to grow heavy.
What did he…
“Goodnight, Cass,” I faintly hear the old man say before everything goes dark.

A few minutes later, in the dead direwolf’s den
“Aaannd, there you go,” Leo mutters while gently placing Cassandra onto a small bed that he had taken out of his storage bag.
He looks at her for a few seconds before turning away and walking towards the entrance to the cave, all while his appearance slowly morphs to once again resemble the young-looking man who had discovered her earlier.
In his older looking form, he had gray hair, wrinkles all over his face, and gray eyes. However, in his real form, Leo has short black hair, with green eyes.
Once he reaches the mouth of the cave, he holds up his hand and activates a skill, causing a faint blue barrier to appear covering up the entrance. He then turns back around and walks up to the bed before placing a folded piece of paper on the floor half a meter away from the bed itself and, after a brief hesitation, a small storage bag along with it.
‘It was fun while it lasted, but I came here for a mission, and that mission has already been completed,’ he thinks to himself with a smile, only for the smile to fade away as the device in his pocket begins to vibrate and a man’s voice rumble in his head, “Commander Ashton, did you manage to find the vein?”
“Yes, High Commander, I did,” Leo answers, his thoughts transmitting directly to the device in his pocket.
Almost immediately, the High Commander’s voice comes back, “Good job, now come back. We will deal with the vein once the planar restrictions are removed.”
Leo nods despite the High Commander not being able to see as he answers, “Understood.”
Right after his confirmation, the device stops vibrating, signifying the end of the conversation.
Leo then focuses on Cassandra for a moment before muttering, “I’ve done all I can for you, so please don’t die and waste all my hard work.”
He then turns around and takes a step forwards, only to disappear from the cave entirely, leaving the only sound remaining being that of the faint hum of the barrier covering the entrance.
