Doctor Who Series 7 - Cold War

Comments

No worries :) Thank you so much though :)

Nicologik

Sorry Nicole I will be more careful in future x

It´s ok, if you do write something that someone else has already written. You don´t have to read all of the other comments first, before leaving your own :) Please always be careful talking about future episode, even if it´s in a mysterious , non spoilery way. But it kind of lifts my expectation, which I don´t want to happen. I know I´m beeing very pedantic here (and I´m really sorry about it), but I really want to go into a new episode, not knowing anything, and rather be surprised about it beeing really good :) But since I´ve watched and posted the next episode by now, I do understand why you like it. :) It was really good. I´m still confused about some parts, but also curious as to how we continue this journey :)

Nicologik

I'm sorry if I missed it in the comments, but I am surprised no one mentioned Liam Cunningham who played the captain. he has been in many films and tv shows, most notably playing Davos Seaworth in Game of thrones. I thought the episode was ok, I think we are still getting used to Clara, but I have always liked her as a companion. the next episode is a favourite of mine and features another well known actor. i think we are building now to the best part of this series i hope you enjoy the next few.

First of all, I was notified so....yeahhhhh :) Second, thanks for that joke, it made me laugh. And also, thanks for the info about the movie. :) Oh and last but not least, sorry for the wrong reply, I didn´t do it on purpose. :/

Nicologik

[Rather than replying to my message, you posted your reply to the main Patreon thread. So that might mean you might get notified if I reply to this - so as an experiment in Patreon notifications, I will reply to it.] [Joke: If you don't get notified, please let me know.] "The Hunt for Red October" is not really a war movie, it's more a spy thriller set during the US/Soviet Cold War. Sean Connery, one of the James Bonds, played the Soviet submarine captain.

I don´t know the movie "Hunt for red October", since I´m not really into war movies. Maybe that´s a reason for why this episode really wasn´t mine. But I´m happy you did kinda enjoy it :) Thank you so much for all the background info regarding this episode. :) I did understand the Ice Warrior if I remember correctly :) If I ever rewatch this episode in the future, I will pay attention to that flipping of the film :) I was wondering about that Barbie doll. It seems really odd for him to have it. I´m wondering if we will find out one day. :)

Nicologik

I am happy for you, that you do enjoy this episode. It wasn´t really mine, but I can see why you would like it :)

Nicologik

I was judging him by his outfit, that was the reason I thought he was a janitor. And somehow my brain didn´t want to change that first impression anymore. :) Thanks for clarifying. :) Thank you for the info about the Classic episodes. Very interesting :)

If I remember correctly the captain had this one sentence when he talked to the professor. The man asked what they were doing and the Captain replied something along the lines of "We are destroying the planet". And that sentence was what i was referring to. But to be honest, I´m not even sure anymore, if that was actually what he said lol :) You are right about the smaller developments in this episode. Thank you for pointing them out :) Also thank you for clarifying the situation with the songs and the professor. :) Oh that´s funny to hear. You have the same Captain with the same advert, but he is named differently :)

"Is this how you want history to remember you? Grand Marshal Skaldak, destroyer of Earth?", The Doctor, "Cold War" I feel the same as last week - this is an interesting episode for me to rate. I always remember it as a so-so story that is reasonably entertaining but not great. But when I'm watching it again (alone or with a reactor) I end up liking it so much more than I remembered. BTW: being based on a Soviet submarine, it always obviously makes me think of the film "The Hunt for Red October" - I certainly don't get fish-finger vibes (I do realise that was just about the look of the Captain). We've seen the Ice Warriors before in Classic Who. The very first time was a classic base-under-seige story. I avoided episode spoilers for this new "Cold War" episode, so the view of something embedded in a block of ice was a surprise - but it was very familiar - there's a similar story point to that first story - so I guessed what was inside the ice. The monster is named an Ice Warrior by one of the scientists in that first story (well, it was a warrior found in a block of ice) - so we don't really know what *they* call themselves. On the other hand, the view of the Ice Warrior out of its suit is new for this story. BTW: you've heard the "Ice Warrior" name before - they were name-dropped in David's special episode "The Waters of Mars". One thing about the Classic Who Ice Warriors was that it was almost impossible for TV viewers to understand their speech (or is that only me?). The original actor in the Ice Warrior costume, Bernard Bresslaw, decided to make the Ice Warrior speak with a pronounced hiss (they are evolved from reptiles) and the following appearances of the Ice Warrior in Classic Who copied this speech style. Our favourite New Who voice artist, Nicholas Briggs, makes the voice much more rasping in this version. The theme of honour of the noble warrior is a trait I associate with the Ice Warriors - although in some of the Classic shows they were basically used just as an intimidating recurring monster. One stories that most strongly shows this aspect was an audio adventure, not a TV episode, published in 2000. I think that is where the writer of this story (Mark Gatiss - who we last saw him as an actor under all the prosthetic makeup playing electric chess) picked up some of this honourable warrior theme that the Doctor plays on. As mentioned in comments above, David Warner, who plays the Professor was an impressive casting catch for the show. He has been in many big films, e.g. "Titanic", but the role that comes to mind for me is his role in the film "Time After Time" from 1979 - a time travel film - no spoilers. One thing you look for, once it's pointed out to you, is that there was only one submarine corridor set. But they use it for both the left and right side of the submarine and flipped the film to show the other orientation. But you can tell because of the flashing beacon - it rotates clockwise in one orientation and when they show the other one it is going anticlockwise. I do like the fact that the Doctor has a Barbie doll - I have no idea why. BTW: that is possibly another thing of sentimental value the Doctor might have had to offer in the previous story. I think the story does its job - we are concerned with the safety of the characters during the show so that indicates that the story is working. If you asked me right now, I'd rate it a bit higher than IMDB - it might be less in a few months after I've forgotten I quite like it. "You? No! No! No way! You're not going in there alone, Clara. Absolutely, not! No, no. Never!", The Doctor, "Cold War" - just before we cut to Clara going in to face Skaldak. Oh, and I do like Clara's attempt at the Martian salute.

Andrew Vignaux

It's a neat little 'nasty monster lurking in a confined space' suspenser; with plenty going on. It's probably my favourite Mark Gatis episode. A perfectly safe story for him to write: bring back a Classic Who monster;Claustrophobic location; 80s pop nostalgia; danger of a nuclear conflagration. He really couldn't get it wrong - and he didn't. Not a masterpiece; but perfectly serviceable.

Captain Iglo in the UK is more widely known as Captain Birdseye. The old guy wasn't a janitor, he was a professor. He was played by David Warner who has actually played an alternate universe Doctor in a series of audio plays. The Ice Warriors are another alien from classic Who appearing in the 60's & 70's. They first appeared in the 2nd doctor's era which is also the first time the HADS system that moved the Tardis was moved. This was also the era that was well known for base under siege stories like this. In fact the writer of this story has called it a 'love letter' to those episodes from the 60's I give it a 4/5. It's ranked 93rd/140. I like it better than the previous episode but again it doesn't really stand out as anything special.

I'm not sure if I'm misunderstanding what you said about the situation at the beginning but just in case - the Russians weren't actually going to destroy the planet. They were holding a drill in which they were acting out a situation where they had to launch the nuclear missiles. I imagine that the Americans held similar drills back then. I like the episode although I agree that it doesn't develop any of the series' themes or the relationship between Doctor and Clara very much. In some ways it could have been dropped into the series before the previous one or a bit later. But we do get Clara starting to understand how the Doctor operates and becoming just a bit too keen to impress him. To pass a test as he puts it. She seems quite shocked when things begin to "get real" and she realises what the stakes really are. The old man is called the Professor by the Russians and he is the one who has dated the time of the Ice Warrior's freezing in the ice. So I have always assumed that he really is a Professor and not a janitor with a funny nickname or anything like that. He is also obsessed with western pop music of the eighties. Especially the British bands Ultravox and Duran Duran. He tries to persuade Clara to sing Duran Duran's song Hungry Like The Wolf with him but she refuses to sing it until later when they are all waiting to find out if the Martians will leave peacefully. We do know Captain Iglo in the UK but we know him as Captain Birdseye because the frozen food company whose products he advertises is called Birds Eye Foods over here. The American man who started the company was named Clarence Birdseye. The advert looks exactly the same as one that we have seen here though.
