Dr. Who Reaction - The Angels take Manhattan

Comments

I didn't make the connection to the "Pooh sticks" in this episode until now. That means that Amy's first, and last episodes have Winnie the Pooh references. The food scene in Eleventh Hour is based on the story of Tigger trying Pooh's honey, Piglet's acorns, and Eeyore's thistles, only to spit them all out in disgust https://pooh.fandom.com/wiki/Tigger?file=Yuck%21.jpeg

You had me going through a load of tissues, even though I have seen this episode at least three times before. Sending you a virtual hug, I think it is wise to wait until you have seen the rest of the series to choose your top three, IMO the second half is really good. X ps I subscribe on YouTube as Merlin’s Cat x

Yeah I guess it works better as a minisode. But it´s a much needed addition to be honest. Cause that was my main "problem" with the episode. That we didn´t see how Rorys father would ever know what happened to his child.

Nicologik

I understand what you mean. I had a different impression of that scene though. Interesting that there seems to be another interpretation possible though. Yeah the "damage" part was something I noticed while editing the episode for Youtube. And it made so much more sense after having seen the whole episode. Thanks for the info about the shooting of this one scene. Sounds funny to me, how they managed that :D :D

Nicologik

Also, I think the "P.S." bit was dropped from the actual episode because they couldn't work out how to make it fit in with the flow of the story.

I think what happened on the roof was that once Amy started talking to Rory, and even more once she stepped up on to the ledge with him, he needed her to help him NOT by pushing him off, but by letting him know she understood why he was doing it. I can't articulate what I mean very well, but hopefully that makes some kind of sense. PS: I really like your comments in the introduction to your video for the next episode, when you tied River's behaviour at the end with her earlier remarks to Amy about not showing the Doctor any "damage". PPS: The show was at its peak mainstream in the US during this era, and there was quite a crowd in Central Park watching the shooting of the scene where Matt Smith reads the last page of the book. I believe the actual prop used was a blank page, and Karen Gillan was reading the book's text to Matt off-camera. Because of the crowds she had to whisper her lines! I don't think her departure had been made public yet.

I feel you, this episode is so hard to watch. I edited it yesterday and I had to stop several times in between because I wasn´t able to see anything anymore, due to my teary eyes :D Agreed, this era of the show is one of the best yet. The Trio is my favorite up until this point and I don´t think anyone will ever be able to move closer to my heart. Just like the David Doctor is still my favorite, they will stay on 1st place for a loooong time :D I´m glad you are enjoying my uncut reactions on Patreon. Welcome to this community. :) We do also have a Dsicord channel, if you want to join. No pressure though :) The minisode was the worst, in terms of feeling sad. I can definately understand, that you needed so many tissues for this one. I hope you´re having a wonderful week as well, thank you :)

This episode always has me weeping , watching this when it first came out had me in tears and Its a bit embarrassing but I refused to go into school the next day and faked being sick , just because of my emotional attachment to these characters :( Also Amy and Rory will always be my favourite companions , as I started to watch the show from season 5 and onwards , so this episode was especially hard as they where the first companions I got to know and love . Also no hate to the David doctor through this , I still do love him with all of my heart , but the nostalgia I have for these characters is so strong so that is why this is my favourite era of the show . An amazing reaction , I just love how you have also connected with these characters like I have , before this I only watched your YouTube videos , but I loved your reactions so much that I finally became a Patron , and I am loving it . Even though usually this is a very hard watch for me , the story I find so interesting , and I adore the use of the book in this episode , hinting to the future events in the episode , and on re-watch I always get Goosebumps when I see the words 'Amelia's last farewell' , knowing what is about to come . I definitely needed multiple packets of tissues for this reaction , and also I had never seen that mini-sode , so I was experiencing that for the first time , and I got overwhelmed with emotion . For me this is a 10/10 episode , I may be biased , but I love the story , and I have never cried to anything more in my life . Hope you have a wonderful rest of your week , and cannot wait for the future Doctor who reactions now that I am officially a Patron :D

The BBC wants high viewing figures. If that means spoiling a plot surprise in order to hook viewers, that's what they often do. They did something for more frustrating for a later series! You're very fortunate in experiencing them 'pure' :)

Thank you for beeing considerate while writing your comment that´s nice of you :) And yes, it helps, because I miss them sooooooo much. :/ Now I have to go back and rewatch the "Sherlock tv show". This is such a cool fact, thanks for letting me know :) Also the Baker street "coincidence", very clever writing :) I didn´t really pay attention to the opening titles, because during the reaction I´m trying to avoid them due to spoilers, and in my editing I don´t really edit the opening. But thanks for letting me know about this. It´s actually pretty cool :) Also thank you for letting me know about the bulb and extractor fans. Nice little additions that I didn´t really recognize, but they amuse me, looking back at it :) I agree, the afterword by Emilia were so great and sad at the same time. i wanted to talk about it in my review, but due to me not really beeing me after watching that episode, I kinda forgot that part :D :D

Nicologik

Awww I totally get that. I´m already afraid of editing it this week. I don´t want to go to that place again. But I already know I will cry while editing. Sometimes I even have to stop editing in episodes like these, because I can´t see anymore due to the tears in my eyes. This will be a hard one to get through another time. So I totally understand. I agree with your opinion about Amy and Rory, and that they should have gotten more time to develope. I loved this team, it´s my favorite as well, and I miss them so much already :/

Nicologik

Oh no....Why would the spoil something like that? Don´t they want their fans to be surprised? I agree, that they really manipulate your feelings in this episode, but than again, isn´t that what tv shows always do. It´s kind of what they are made for. Feels like a strange reason to hate an episode. I don´t know if I´m ready for a new start yet, but we´ll see what the show has to offer. :)

Nicologik

I´m doing ok, thank you for asking :) It was a tough ride though. Thank you for the link, I´m gonna ask Andrew wether I can watch the link or not :)

Nicologik

I guess you´re right about River. I thought about that as well. When the Doctor "died" she told Amy that she was able to still see him because of her travelling in time. So I guess the same goes for Amy and Rory. And we also know that she is able to travel to places or times where the doctor can´t, because this is what happens in this very episode, Wow, all this waiting for these episodes to air, that´s so cruel. Yes I feel sorry for you. :) I can´t wait to watch the next episode, although it´ll be really weird to react to a christmas episode while melting away due to the heat outside :D :D

Nicologik

I agree this episode was great as an ending for Amy and Rory. Cruel, but great :D And that cemetery scene was the worst. I felt so relived when I saw them alive. How could they do this to me? :D :D Thank you for the explanation of River, it makes sense.

Nicologik

"Do not at this point, yowz.", Amy Pond, "The Angels Take Manhattan" I kept myself away from spoilers (not being in the UK helped) so this event did come as a surprise to me. Amy and Rory were great companions. And it's tragic that this happened just after they had just started to travel with the Doctor again. And for Brian. But I'm going to concentrate on trivia to keep your mind off that - hope it helps. The chapter that is being written in the pre-title sequence with the private detective is called "The Dying Detective". That's the title of a Sherlock Holmes short story (it doesn't involve Weeping Angels). Incidentally, that Holmes short story was adapted to the "Sherlock" TV series by our Steven Moffat and featured Toby Jones (who played The Dream Lord in "Amy's Choice"). Another possible Holmes tie-in is that later in this Who episode, the Doctor goes back in time to China in 221 BC. Is it just a coincidence that 221 BC is almost Sherlock Holmes' address - 221B Baker Street? Anyway, it's nice for me to see the Weeping Angels doing what I want Weeping Angels to do - that is zapping people back in time. Amy plays Pooh Sticks (where you drop a stick into a river from a bridge) - very sweet. If you've noticed, all the "Doctor Who" opening titles for this 7A sub-series have been slighly different and are related to their particular story - in this one the titles are in the Statue of Liberty green. This is quite obscure but I think it's a nice micro-arc - we have another 11th Doctor reference to the light bulb on top of the TARDIS. In the "Meanwhile in the TARDIS" minisode (you watched it before "The Beast Below") Amy asks if the TARDIS bulb ever needs changing. In the "Last Night" minisode (which I think you watched but I can't remember where) River was sent outside to check the bulb. And in one of the "Pond Life" minisodes we see the Doctor actually changing the bulb. Anyway, when they are coming out of the TARDIS in this story, River asks about the bulb and he replies that he had changed it. From bulbs to extractor fans: in "Let's Kill Hitler" it turns out that the TARDIS has extractor fans, to the Doctor's surprise. In this story, he uses them after attempting to navigate to 1938 New York. I really like how Amy lists some of her adventures with the Doctor in her final page Afterword for things the Doctor should tell young Amelia. "There's a little girl waiting in a garden." Afterword by Amelia Williams, "The Angels Take Manhattan"

I think Paula felt it was just too mercenary on Moffat's part (They're dead - oh, they survived - oh, they've died again); to the point where it was, for her, the straw that broke the camels back. Moffat got (too much, imo) criticism WHATEVER he did!

Ian Smith

I've not been brave enough to watch this video yet! The episode itself is tough for me to watch, because of the emotional punch it has. I've never consciously analysed the plot but it feels like it doesn't really make sense, and the script sacrifices a cohesive plot in favour of targeting an emotional response from the viewer; but whereas for me that was an increasingly annoying flaw with RTD's finales ("The Last of the Time Lords" being a particular low point) this most "RTD" of Moffat finales does work for me emotionally, perhaps because we've previously seen solid plots from Moffat so this episode wasn't just a writer giving us more of what is obvious from them. Or maybe I'm talking rubbish. :-D I think the character arc for "the Ponds" over the three years is brilliantly done, and Amy, Rory, and the Eleventh Doctor are perhaps my favourite Tardis team. I just wish that more time had been allowed to make more of the individual stories stronger, and that Moffat had also reined himself in to pace and structure the seasons better.

Andrew Gwilliam

The Gallifrey Gals? I always found that a frustrating and frankly baffling criticism. After all, it's the writers' (and others') job to emotionally manipulate the viewer, so as to (for example) grow to love certain characters.

Andrew Gwilliam

In the UK,this was massively hyped as 'the one where we say goodbye to the Ponds'; which kind of lessened it for me. Had I not known that this was their final story,it would have had far more of an impact. Interestingly, I've seen one reactor who hated it due to its emotional manipulation; which is valid - but I feel that it works. Anyway...it's time for the show to move on. Imo,the Ponds had outstayed their effectiveness; and Eleven's era was in need of a new dynamic. I hope you'll enjoy it!

Ian Smith

Firstly I hope you are doing ok. As much as I was looking forward to this reaction I knew how devastated you'd feel. One way I ended up feeling better about it was to remember although their gone and won't see the Doctor again they did end up living happily ever after together. There is another small 'minisode' that was done during lockdown which I think you'd like. I'll post a link but check with you mod first to see what they think. Anyway it's a 5/5 for me and it hits my top 30 being ranked 30/140. Also looking forward to the next story. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVqW4XjZwC8

I don't remember being told anything that answers your questions so I couldn't make any spoilers even if I wanted to. But I have always assumed that River could see Amy and Rory again even if the Doctor couldn't. Otherwise she couldn't promise to send Amy a copy of her book so she can write an afterword. Whether she can go back directly to that time with her vortex manipulator or if there is some other, more complicated explanation, I am not at all sure. I do agree though that River also wanted Amy and Rory to be together no matter where or when they were living. Incidentally, I do sometimes wonder why The Doctor couldn't travel back to a different part of New York a year before any of this happened and then just sit in his Tardis and wait. But it doesn't do to overthink these dramatic/heart-breaking moments! They are what they are. I think that when Rory is taken down to the cellar, River is stuck with the villainous collector guy and is simply unable to help him. She just stays calm and waits for the Doctor to arrive as his message on the vase suggests that he will. You are right to say that this was the end of series seven: part one. The next episode is a Christmas special and it was broadcast three months later. Then we had to wait another three months for the beginning of series seven: part two. Don't you feel sorry for us? I love the episode except for the stuff about the Statue of Liberty which just seems silly. That's a very minor quibble though. The rest of it was fantastic as the ninth Doctor would say. Funny, tense, dramatic, tragic - everything. And I would agree with your 9.4 rating. I will be fascinated to see what you make of the next one but I am saying nothing more than that.

This is one of the episodes I have been waiting for. I really love this episode, I think its a great ending to Amy and Rory. Thinking about it, I think its this episode that makes me have "the moment" for Matts Doctor, as late as it is. I remember this episode SO clearly from back when it aired, I was still a kid and it gave me horrible nightmares. Though the Weeping Angels will absolutely remain as one of my favourite villains. When I saw you get excited that Amy and Rory were alive after jumping off the building, I started to feel so terrible because I knew what was coming ahaha. The reason I believe that River let Amy go at get zapped back in time by the Angel at the end is because at the end of the day, River just wants her parents to be happy. River probably knows that they'd be happy together. The Doctor reacted differently because as he said, he doesn't like endings. River was raised to be a psychopathic killer to kill the Doctor, I think it would make sense that she would be able to put on some kind of poker face and grieve internally, because of course she's sad, she probably just doesn't show it. I'd rate this episode a 8.5/10. Very very good.
