Dr. Who Series 5 - The Lodger

That was FUN :)

Dr. Who Series 5 - The Lodger

I think at the time I found it a little too silly for my taste especially things like the head butting. And while there are episodes that I've thought were silly that I've started liking after time (there I one coming up which I'll talk about then) I struggle with this episode due to issues with the writer. But I'm happy that you liked it 🙂

Yes, I agree. I love this episode :) Oh thank you for the backround information :) I love how you keep telling me things I couldn´t possibly know about this show. But that is very important to get the whole picture. I really appreciate you doing that, thank you :)

Nicologik

Oh ok that kinda makes sense. Thank you for clarifying :)

Nicologik

It´s unfortunate that the resolution isn´t satisfying for you. To be honest I didn´t really think too much about the "reality" of the plot or anything else in this episode. I just laughed a lot and had so much fun. For me that is all I need :D But I get your points. :)

Nicologik

Yes, fun :) That´s what this episode is all about. And that´s why I like it so much :)

Nicologik

Wow, that´s very surprising, as I liked the episode very much. :)

Nicologik

I just watched the Trailer for "Back to life". It looks really interesting. Thank you for the recommendation. :) Had never heard of it before :) Haha sometimes I can´t decide an IMBD rating either. You should see the uncut footage. :) Sometimes I´m debating with myself for minutes, I just cut it out of the Original footage, because I don´t want all of you to fall asleep in the meantime :D :D This whole Football, Fußball, soccer thing is so complicated hahaha :D We do also call the American Football, football in Germany. But we also call soccer, Fußball which litterally would mean Football. :D :D You felt just like me, when I tried explaining it in the video. It made sense in my head, but when I said the actual words, it seemed so complicated all of the sudden :D

Nicologik

Oh thanks for that info :)

Nicologik

I was really struggeling wether it was him or not :)

Nicologik

Thank you so much for this kind comment :) I´m so exited for the finale already :)

"All I've got to do is pass as an ordinary human being. Simple. What could possibly go wrong?", The Doctor, "The Lodger" I like small stories. I like big story concepts too, but I also like the small ones. This story idea was adapted from a graphic novel story written about the second series Tenth (David) Doctor (pre "School Reunion") forced to stay with Mickey Smith for a few days while waiting for Rose and the TARDIS to reappear. The monster threat is different - but that's not really what this episode was about anyway. So, for example. the joke of confusing an electric toothbrush for the sonic screwdriver was taken from the original comic. The Doctor playing in a local football game was also in the original. I really liked the talk between Sophie and the Doctor when he "agrees" that she should just stay in the call centre rather than chasing her dreams, thus convincing her not to. And of course that was why the machine then regarded Sophie as a potential pilot. Nicely written - and not in the original story. Oh, and the Doctor interrupts the couple (funny) just to ask where the "on" switch is on the ordinary Earth screwdriver. And Matt had a lot of fun filming the football. "Best day of filming ever on Doctor Who ... because we're playing football", Matt Smith, "Doctor Who Confidential"

Oh, and I think the in-story reason for the Doctor banging Craig's head was to avoid a more obvious Time Lord method that would've drawn attention to the Doctor. I'm not sure that really makes sense, but I'm also not sure it needs to in the context of a light-hearted episode.

The resolution lets this episode down for me: I don't have a problem with the core idea, but the way it's portrayed on screen falls flat for me. If it weren't for that then I'd rate it a 4 out of 5, which I usually think of as meaning "it's a minor classic", but as it is it only gets a 3.5 out of 5. I do also have a gripe with a weird decision by the production team: there is no way someone would build a single-storey house of that sort; it would've made much more sense for them to use a more modern building that could believably be either one or two storeys. I think some people will mark this episode down because it's low-key and "domestic" but I like having occasional episodes like that.

This is a Series 6 story that I quite often rewatch. It's not that it's particularly original; and it's definitely not emotionally deep - but that's probably why I enjoy it. It's a good laugh (the Doctor popping up from behind the settee during Craig and Sophie's particularly sensitive moment; the entertaining perspective on the popular fashion of air kissing; the lightning-fast zap, back through the Doctors past, when he headbutt's Craig). No classic - but good fun!

Ian Smith

Kind of an average episode for me and I've ranked it 117/140. I can't wait for the next reaction.

Other people have confirmed that Craig is James Corden of Carpool Karaoke and other shows. It's also quite interesting to me to re-watch this and realise that Sophie was played by Daisy Haggard who co-wrote and starred in a dark BBC "comedy drama" called Back To Life. There were two series of that and I really recommend them both if you have the opportunity and the time to watch them. It is a great, fun episode and I love the fact that you loved it so much. I don't know if I would give it a 9.2 but I could never do an IMDB rating anyway as I am too indecisive. We call fußball "football" most of the time. The game also gained the nickname "soccer" which is a weird kind of abbreviation for Association Football. There is also Rugby Football (the one where you can pick up the ball and run with it) which almost everyone just calls rugby. Just to make things worse, the Americans invented their own game which is similar to rugby except that they wear all sorts of padding and body armour. They call this "football" and we call it American football. The Americans didn't want to just use the word football for the game that everyone else plays as they were using it for their own game. So they always say "soccer" for the original version. And when anyone learns English in addition to their own language they tend to learn a lot of American expressions. I hope that made some kind of sense. I kept editing what I had written until I was annoying myself and nearly deleted the whole thing!

Peter Davison was a keen cricketer and got to play cricket in The Black Orchid. So it was only fair to let Matt play football in this one!

Matt Smith was working to be a professional footballer before he did acting as a career. So he's a very good soccer player.

Richard Austen

This is a really fun story. You're right about the actor playing Craig. He's a British actor and this was filmed before he went to the US and became famous there. He does Carpool Karaoke.

Richard Austen

Hi! I really liked your reaction! And I'm looking forward to your reaction to the season finale!
