I love reactions to this film because if you don't know how they did it then it's a mystery on multiple levels. Someone prob already said on YT but they basically improvised most of it, and Heather wasn't sure if she wanted to participate cause she thought it might be a snuff film. Also they knew the producers were gonna do weird things at night but not the specifics, like the piles of rocks and rustling the trees etc etc. A lot of it was them being actually startled.
