as someone who did fairly poorly in school ((and college)) i really feel for paulo here

Hell, it doesn't even need to be that prestigious to be valid; with how much Paulo actually seems to enjoy working fast food and how charming he is around customers and co-workers, I could easily see him being an amazing store manager, potentially even a district manager if he's ambitious enough. There's nothing wrong with settling for a job that you enjoy. That said, there is still value in exploring different fields as well. The future is unpredictable, and having more experience in different settings will not only help find new career paths should your current one fall through, but may even open up a new passion you want to start pursuing. As the saying goes; A jack of all trades, but a master of none, is is oftentimes better than a master of one.

Instead of just forcing her ideals on him, she should be asking what he really wants to do for himself in the future, and help him with that. Not automatically try to get him into college.
