GLEE S05E18 WATCH PARTY

They didn't let Santana sing because she's a scene stealer and was shining too much when she wasn't supposed to. She was the best part of Glee at this point so they had to get rid of her asap even if it hurt the show.

Capri Zonica

I'm only back to watch the episodes.....err, no, not even the episodes, just the scenes she's in.

Capri Zonica

And where's Brittany here? So Santana quit the undestudy to go back and struggle as a waitress? And we never got to see what happened to that contract with Mercedes.

Capri Zonica

Totally agree. For those who say otherwise, this is the same person who quit glee after 2 weeks because she didn’t one solo, gave away kitten after kitten as a kid because none of them were perfect, ran for class president before the WSS cast list was out and still kept her campaign after getting Maria, and quit piano lessons as a kid because she got bored! Now it does seem out of character given how much she loves Broadway and she knew that it was going to be repetitive, but there’s an argument for both sides.

Selma Jabr

Reminder: the dude didn't send or give her a script to read! I definitely think she would've turned down the audition if she had the info. In real life they would've given her the info she needed to make a decision!

Michaela Evans

I’m glad someone appreciates my tangent 😂 I wasn’t expecting anyone to read it tbh

Sophie R

this is so interesting to me and it actually makes a lot of sense.

Wrenretro

yeah Rachels storyline goes really weird after this in my opinion. there is only a few episodes in the middle of season five I like and this is where it starts to get worse again for me until season six. I see the storyline but they should've given Rachel more time and showed her enjoying her acheived dream instead of 2 episodes later saying she suddenly is bored of it ( I do understand that time has passed in canon but still ). The writers decisions for storylines in general for the next bit of episodes till the end is questionable but don't get me wrong there are a lot of reasons why I think they did what they did with Rachel so they could set up season 6 its just so fast paced and feels very odd. I personally like season 6 because it's kinda of so off and poorly written that it's good lol. a few episodes in particular I actually really like. excited to see your thoughts an I can't believe your almost onto the last season :D its been a journey!

Wrenretro

Yeah, Glee season 6 is basically episodes 2, 3, 6, & 8 for me. Santana was the 🔥 ❤️ of the show.

Her strong desire for justice is another one (sorry I know my comment is now long af) - she told Finn about the baby even though everyone else knew that was the wrong thing to do in the situation because it was delicate, she was driven by doing the right thing (and obviously her feelings for Finn too). She has a hard time with empathy (not every ASD person does, but some do) - the whole Sunshine thing, she sees her as purely competition, not stopping to think that she’s a person who could be hurt by her actions as she is so intent on being number 1. There are also traits of ADHD but the 2 are highly comorbid so that would make sense - quitting things very quickly because the hyperfixation passes - broadway, piano lessons, etc. plus Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria is very common in ADHD.

Sophie R

No one else may believe this, but Ik there are other Gleeks out there who do, but Rachel has somewhat of a PDA profile (Pathological Demand Avoidance, a profile on the autism spectrum). As soon as she’s told she can’t do something that’s exactly what she wants and she’ll stop at nothing to get it, she cannot take direction or instruction from anyone. Plus she does just have many autistic traits - strict routines (anyone remember her Morning and night routines), very rigid interests and specific skill sets which she dedicates her life to (uploading a video to MySpace every day) and wanting to be the best at what she is good at because in her head it’s ‘her thing’ , she gets very overwhelmed and burnt out very quickly, if something doesn’t go how she expects it to, she just stops it (not immediately getting a solo in glee club so she quits), hard time with sarcasm/irony (the sit down you’re rocking the boat ordeal - plus the storm out after because others aren’t understanding her view, oh and the afternoon delight song), difficulty forming and maintaining relationships (platonic/romantic - there are also indications of rejection sensitive dysphoria). There’s quite a few more, but idk how anyone else feels about this. Just an opinion 🤷🏻‍♀️

Sophie R

I’m glad Jonathan wasn’t Finn. It just wouldn’t have felt as good if he was already an incredible singer and dancer in season 1, whereas with Cory we got to see so much development in every aspect of his character (maybe not so much the dancing).

Sophie R

I hate what they do with Rachel’s storyline here. Like I totally understand getting burnt out from doing 8 shows a week, every week, but I just think it’s so out of character for her to suddenly hate broadway and want out. This is the point where I start to hate season 5 (yes it’s nearly over but still) and in my opinion it doesn’t really pick back up until mid season 6.

Sophie R

She didn't exactly say that though. She said she wanted to go to NY to do broadway, and go to school there. She never said she wouldn't do TV or movies.

Kristen J

I disagree. Rachel wanted to be star. She wanted to do broadway, but she mostly just wanted to be a star. I also think people think they know what they want until they get it sometimes. She may have known it was going to be extremely exhausting, but knowing and doing it are very different. Especially playing the same role over and over again, as an actor that can get boring and unfulfilling. Besides, she reached her dream. She got to star as Fanny Brice...is she supposed to just do that forever and nothing else?

Kristen J

That’s a great idea!

Annie Willow

Yeah, I will never fault Chris or any of the other cast from any opinions they have of Lea. This was a big episode for him, and from everything I understand, Lea chose his episode to go full diva. I know she was probably always a diva and could be hard to get along with, but keep it off set. Let Chris have his moment! Of course, I throw a lot of blame on Ryan Murphy as well. I don’t think he ever helped matters.

Jenn

they made Santana the hero of them ALL. because naya was the back bone of the series. even if they didn't give her the respect she dissevered. season six coming on no respect to her 'NAYA at the end and it started in the last 2 esp of season 5.

Linda

well remember Rachel left NADA for broadway without thinking as well. she is a kids don't know what she wants she thought she wanted broadway BUT changed her mind again. our just got scared about it and made a bad direction .

Linda

yess! and this is where ALL the drama with Lea and Naya and the producer exposed . because after this next eps Naya was not around until season 6.and its in her book what happened with lea & Naya drama. Naya all the way. everyone has always talked about Nayas work ethics how she was on time, knew her lines , and always on her mark. I feel bad for Chris colder it was his 1st producer credit I loved it!! sorry got of topic I loved these eps as well loved seeing Merceds and Naya together and making Naya more feeling and supportive to her friends.

Linda

Audrey, what do you think about a comparison video of all the main people in Glee from their first solos to their last? I know so many of their voices matured over the seasons, especially Kurt.

Steph Stephens

Yeah I always hated the writers doing this it's so not Rachel. So stupid. Like I get some theatre people on broadway try go for pilot week where it's filming for tv pilots to try get tv job bc they get more $ then can try get more opportunities with broadway but yeah so stupid they did this for the Rachel character. Glee writers got lazy

Jackie Warner

This episode is so weird. Rachel is horrendous in this like her entire life wanting to be on Broadway and she never thought about what it would be like actually being on Broadway? And Blaine wtf. There was literally no reason to lie. But I loved Santana's character development in this. Also the random, oh Santana is living with Mercedes now?

Haughtbreaker Nic

I always felt that her drive was to be on Broadway so it wasn’t consistent with her character to give up on that. But this TOTALLY makes sense. It’s not “Broadway” — it’s her stubborn ambition. She’s got the talent but she doesn’t have a foundation of appreciation. Instead of feeling immense gratitude for getting into NYADA or being cast as the lead in a Broadway musical, it’s like she felt that she could check them off her list and move on to the next thing to conquer.

desiderata770

I wanted to write this on the episode where you were cheering her on for dropping out of college, but i 10000% agree w Carmen. Rachel had no foundation and no real world experience before getting on Broadway. And what NYADA could’ve prepared her for she has no knowledge of how to go about this buisness. Rachel has and will always will be ambitious anf greedy so this plot like made 100% sense. Of corse once Rachel gets what she wants she’s not satisfied and needs more and more and more. Her dream is to be popular and famous and she likes proving people wrong. So when her agent said no TV she immediately was like “I HAVE to do TV”. Now I’m not saying she should have stayed at NYADA while she was on funny girl but I think burning that bridge and telling Carmen she was wrong when she’s been an educator and pro in the theatre world for 30+ years was more stupid then her doing the pilot in my opinion. I think her downfall was that moment.

Liv Heskett

I just can't with the writing of Rachel's character here. I know some time has passed since last episode but we literally just saw her on OPENING NIGHT of Funny Girl. She was literally living her dream. She had been obsessed with being on Broadway since she was a fetus. Therefore, she knew what being THE LEAD ON BROADWAY entailed. She finally got what she wanted and when she got bored she was willing to throw it away for a lame ass TV show she knew nothing about? (Though in her defense she didn't get sent the script BUT she didn't even ask what the show was about). And then she lies to the director pretending to be sick? That is so unprofessional. Whatever you thought of her, Rachel had at least always been consistent. The writers completely rewrote the character to create unnecessary drama that didn't make any sense. Btw Glee was aired on Fox. As for Kurt and Blaine I agree that Blaine shouldn't have lied but I understand why he did it, he didn't wanna hurt Kurt. I know that's just how this business works but it must be hard when some people get their "big breaks" and others don't. Same with Mercedes and Santana. I'm also pissed we didn't see any of her take on Fanny. The music in this is very good. Lea's renditions of Wake Me Up (RIP Avicii) and The Rose are so underrated. Fun fact: The guy at the fundraiser who tells them the stock price is lower than normal is Eric Roberts, brother of Julia Roberts and father to Emma Roberts. Chris Colfer wrote the next episode!

Heida

I remember her telling Finn in season 3 that she didn't want to move to LA with him because she was a Broadway star, not a TV star. And now here we are.

I don't even consider this episode canon to be honest, everything that Rachel does here is just so out of character that I literally don't even count it as real. It's just so obvious that the writers are losing interest, and don't even care enough to stay on track with their main character. Like seriously? Rachel has been heading towards Broadway since the first season, that has never changed, and all of a sudden right after she gets her dream role that she's always wanted, she decides to branch out into TV, not to mention a show that she literally knows nothing about. It makes absolutely no sense, and it's just not something that the real Rachel Berry would do. This is just a huge mistake by the writers.

Avalon Perry

Lea Michele was Fanny on Broadway for a year. No one replaced her because it closed. Julie Benko was her understudy and was also the principal Fanny on Thursdays. She is phenomenal.

Jessica Lyme

As someone has already mentioned, Chris Colfer was given the opportunity to write the next episode. He did have some restrictions, so it may feel a little off the beaten path. It’s a really cute episode though!

Jenn

if i remember that is sorta how lea got on glee. ryan murphy met her and jonathan groff when they did spring awakening on broadway and developed glee around them. jonathan was actually supposed to play finn but had other commitments so it went to cory

BRENDAN FOREMAN

This episode annoyed me so much. Rachel has been all about Broadway since season one, she even got into an argument with Finn back in season three when he brought up the idea of moving to L.A. to become a tv/film actress and she shut that down immediately. So, for her to get the role she's always dreamed of, and then go off and try out for an unknown role and essentially destroying her reputation in the Broadway world before she's barely even started is appalling and idiotic. It's so far outside of her character that it shows how little the writers cared at that point even about the main character.

Clay W

To me, this is the episode that you can really tell that the ratings were dropping and they needed storylines that would compel fans to keep coming back each week. Like Blaine lying to Kurt. It would’ve been really easy to avoid and yet it stretches over the next couple episodes. Or Rachel and the TV show thing. Lots of fans say it’s out of character for her to suddenly be bored with Broadway. While they’re not wrong, it could also be looked at like her being 20 and everyone makes bad decisions when they’re young. Also Rachel has a small history of quitting something when she gets bored or things don’t go her way. Like leaving glee club 2 weeks in because Tina got a solo she wanted or getting rid of kitten after kitten when she was little because they weren’t perfect. Next season she mentions quitting piano lessons because she got bored. Plus it’s kind of refreshing to see Rachel truly fail because so far, she has succeeded in almost all of her career decisions. Even ones that seemed to fail ended up working out. This storyline is the moment that was foreshadowed by what Carmon Thibodeau said when Rachel quit NYADA, about her not taking direction and not having any foundation. Also I’m totally with you about not seeing Santana as Fanny. ☹️ Her version of ITGS would have been epic!

Selma Jabr

Rachel’s problem was she got her dream of being Fanny Brice on Broadway too easily. She didn’t have to work her way up from an ensemble member doing only one or two shows a week. She never had the opportunity to work her ass off to prove to herself that she really wanted to be the lead and do the same role 8 shows a week for hundreds of shows. Their high school shows only ran for at most 2 weeks, she didn’t have time to get bored with the character. She got what she thought she wanted not even a year out of high school and when it turned out to be monotonous and not as fun as she hyped it up to be in her dreams, she got bored and her attention strayed. I feel like if she had taken on smaller roles first for a few years and gained some more varied experiences she may not have gotten as bored so quickly. But this is Rachel Barbra Berry we are talking about, there is no way in hell she would have settled for a smaller role if Fanny Brice was an option. Also, Santana proving, yet again, what a fierce friend she is and she is finally actually seeing it for herself. And I am still devastated that we didn’t get to see her perform as Fanny, she would have been outstanding. Her comedic timing is impeccable and we already know she would have slayed “Don’t Rain on my Parade”.

Annie Willow

Tbh It's just ooc for Rachel to pursue Tv/Film when she has dreamed of broadway since she was little. Piece Of My Heart should've also been a Blaine solo, and lying to Kurt wasn't the best choice but he just really wants Kurt to succeed with him. Like they said in a previous episode they want to run the race together.

Gigi

A storyline in itself, she doesn’t see her friends in forever because of the show. Give Lea a few much deserved episodes off lol

Zach Davis

Same. On one hand, I guess it gives her more storylines than just being involved with Funny Girl for how many episodes to come but on the other hand... it's so awful lol.

Jennifer Lawrence

She would’ve never had to lie if she just read the damn script! But it’s gonna get cringey coming up…I still hate Rachel for her decisions towards the end of the season. Can’t wait to get your thoughts on the upcoming episodes

Zach Davis

I always dread this Rachel storyline. While I can't blame her for getting burned out on doing the same thing over and over. And wanting to explore other things... especially with getting her first real taste of fame. I just hate the way she went about it. Especially given the fact that Broadway has been her dream since she was little. To just risk it over something she knows little about and that isn't even a sure thing.

Jennifer Lawrence

Can’t wait until you watch the next episode! Chris Colfer (Kurt) wrote it!
