2023-09-17 18:33:41 +0000 UTCI'm surprised no one has brought this up. The Grudge is heavily rumored to be about Taylor Swift. Taylor Swift and her longtime producer Jack Antonoff were retroactively given writing credits on 2 songs from Olivia's last album, Sour: a) "1 step forward, 3 steps back" - this clearly uses the chords from Swift's "New Year's Day" for much of the song and it sounds like it may have been planned; b) "Deja Vu" - this uses a subtle interpolation for a small part of Taylor's "Cruel Sumer" and it does pair it with a screaming lyric quite similar to Taylor's song. And Olivia did make the unfortunate choice to announce publicly that she got the idea for that part of the song from Cruel Summer. So, just from a business perspective, Taylor would've been advised to protect her copyright. I wouldn't have expected Taylor's team to get so much from it though, it's rumored to be around 50%. Audrey, it would be interesting to hear you compare the songs. Also, I should note Vampire is also rumored to be about this topic but it's not as specific as The Grudge. I suspect Vampire is more generally about the music industry.
