Poll: was the Discord server idea good?

Now when I tested it for a couple of months, I'd say it does have some advantages I mentioned before. Yet, it seems like updating and organizing both Patreon and the server takes me much more effort than it's giving convenience to you, and there are also a few public galleries that also require updating and communication... Sometimes I even ask my friends to help. So, I'm thinking if I should reduce the amount of my social media back to save some time?

Was the Discord server convenient to you? Or was just the Patreon page here fine?

Please take care and keep fighting that depression! Took me 4 years to overcome

Iskra

Discord is ok, if it will be just a second stream without exclusive content. Posting exclusives to it can lead to some drops in subscriptions

I plan on being more active on the Discord in the future, just struggling with activity in general at the moment thanks to depression. If you're concerned about people not using it much, that's pretty normal for a new server... but there are ways to fix it, mostly down to getting people used to checking in and sending messages. Something like a scheduled monthly art AMA could be an option if you feel up to it?

Personally, I never use Discord, so...

I prefer the Patreon page, because I don't know enough about Discord, how it works, nor the time to go on it and a lack of confidence in this Discord. I prefer Patreon to see all of your art rather than looking for illustrations on one site and then another. largely due to lack of time.

Dimitri

Personally, Patreon works fine; Discord isn't necessarily an added convenience, but it does mean I don't need to open my browser. For me, I don't really see a convenience or inconvenience either way. I think the main thing is people who don't have/want Discord won't be able to get the content outside of Patreon. So for that reason, I'd say Patreon is the better choice overall.

FortunePayback

I think just pick whichever one works best for you and let people figure it out. You can't please everyone.

iamzid

I'll consider that, thank you!

Iskra

You need to put your Discord name to your Patreon account and then it adds you automatically ^^

Iskra

that's why I doubling them but seems like it was confusing for some people too!

To be honest i dont see the need of a Discord Server for the Rewards. Maybe for some other generell art stuff, but not for the rewards. Especially because there is a suspicion that “Discord” is recording everything we send via their server. Many people will see it differently, but I think to myself "that's none of their business"

Stratilz

I never found the link to the Discord...

Ascender

I was too lazy to bother with the discord. Though if you stopped offering files here then I suppose I'd have no choice if I want them. Either way, I'd like to maintain the minimum number of sites as well. 🙃

I depend on the Patreon updates to get content. I don't join Patreon-based Discords.

I voted "other." As long as Discord doesn't become an exclusive source, It has no effect on me. I don't have/use Discord and I just don't want to end up having to create another account and/or use another application to access anything. That's usually a deal-breaker for me.

having the discord is nice but certainly not neccesary to be a second stream for your art

Before even voting, I know that Discord will win, as it has long won (at least, for the foreseeable future) the crown for monopoly for a type of communication...despite its myriad of issues. Just keep in mind that while having additional revenue streams (e.g. Fanbox, SubscribeStar, etc.) is great and social media can be helpful for growth (put a pin in that), each mandatory additional location is alienating to supporters. And you are tying your brand to whatever problems the mandatory place has. Discord in particular can be great in some ways, but also can be overwhelming to many due to just how much is going on there. While everyone I know is in some 50+ servers (as many games and communities have made that mandatory), the number actually paid attention to...well, you're lucky to get a dozen because of the sheer amount of pings, noise, and everything going on. So, distributing the content via that may very well lead to a drop in supporters. As for the pin from earlier. With the fracturing of the social media landscape, it's hard to tell what's even worthwhile. While the opportunity cost of a single post is low, that's also an additional place that requires constant attention, moderation, and supervision. Twitter still has a fair number of people, but between the insane fascist-sympathizer owner and a platform overrun by hate, spam, and bots, I'm not sure how much growth would happen. BlueSky is better as it, at least, has a moderation team, but the population is low there. Mastadon was neat, but most people decided it's too confusing. Facebook seemingly has been abandoned by anyone under fifty. And, there's always the concern of places having implicit or publicly known deals to sell (e.g. Reddit) everything you post there to train any "AI" filth that'll throw money at them that is antithetical to anyone that does creative work for a living. So...good luck.

It's nice to have, but hasn't been a priority for me. If it's cutting into creative work, I would either relegate it to the backburner or delegate it to a trusted colleague. Wider social media like Twitter/X is very valuable because it fosters growth, but Discord specifically feels like a backup/alternative media distribution mechanism, moreso than an operational necessity.

Noble Faux

If you add your discord name to your profile here, it adds you automatically ^^

Iskra

Yeah probably

Iskra

I also think both is fine but hard keep up. Therefore prioritizing only one is good enough. From what I care, whatever is easier for you should be the priority

Kill Switch

You have a Discord?!

Eugenok

I think having both is nice, but I would prioritize one & use the other as a back up
