2022-12-20 11:30:02 +0000 UTCOne of my favourite scenes in Cabaret is right at the end of the song Tomorrow Belongs to Me, when it becomes blatantly clear that the other characters illusions that they'll either be able to control the rise of Nazism, or fight it, or that it's not that big a threat have just been completely shattered, and the camera pans to Joel Grey's MC at the KitKat Club & he just smiles and nods at the camera, like "you knew what was coming". It's such a brief gesture, but it's so damn chilling and so very well done. To me one of the signs of a great actor isn't the amount of screen time they have, or how much dialogue or monologuing they can do well, it's the small moments and subtle gestures where they can convey an entire script pages worth of meaning in a single look or movement.

Some actors just seem to relax into a role which, for me anyway, sells it better; Grey does that. It’s a throwaway character, but he makes it far more real than most others would have.

2022-12-16 18:27:49 +0000 UTCThe guy who played the demon that Spike and Dawn visit about the resurrection spell is oscar winning actor, and all round Broadway mega legend, Joel Grey. He won the academy award for best supporting actor in 1973 for his role as the MC in Cabaret, a role he also performed in the show's inaugural Broadway run as well. If you haven't seen Cabaret, you need to put it on your 'must see' list, because it's amazing and Joel Grey is amazing in it. Word apparently was, as well, that they wanted Joel Grey for the part of the demon, but were a bit reluctant/nervous at first to contact him because they were thinking, "OMG he's an academy award winning actor, is he really gonna agree to do a show like Buffy?', and then when they spoke to him they discovered he was actually a fan of the show.

To fulfill love you must return again at the same time and place as the loved ones, and you must remember and love them again. But to be reborn you must die and be ready for a new body; to die you must be born; without love you may not be born, and this is all the magic."
