Love this episode, lots of layers. “Love isn’t brains kids, it’s blood” This is an awesome line, and one that is true to Spike, but not actually true. Love, true love, requires not only desire, but empathy. If you love someone, you recognize when you need to put their needs above yours. You want them to be happy and to thrive, even if it means it’s not with you, even though you might really want it to be. In other words, love is both blood and brains. But Spike, not having a soul, is not capable of that. His “love” is only a love of desire. He has no respect for Dru, no desire to see Dru happy, no understanding of her agency. He only wants her to himself. Spike and Dru’s relationship represent how our primal brains see love, one of lust and desire and passion and immediate gratification without an understanding of the bigger picture. And, as Spike says, this type of “love”, if acted on alone, will burn you up inside, and potentially everything around you. This really establishes the parallels between the three relationships at play here this episode(Buffy/Angel, Spike/Dru, Willow/Xander). Xander and Willow are currently letter their inner Spike and Drusilla out, acting purely on desire and passion without regard for the destruction they’re causing to those around them. Buffy and Angel, on the other hand, show what true love actually is. Notice how Angel encourages Buffy at the beginning of the episode to go to college. Specifically because he knows it’s what’s best for her, even if it’s not what he personally wants. Putting her needs above his own. And Buffy, towards the end, sees the dangers of letting their primal desires take over and destroy everything, and puts a stop to it, ending the relationship. Even though she wants Angel, she knows that their relationship is not healthy, that it would end up hurting both him and her. Their love is blood and brains. Something Spike and Dru are not capable of. Also, just want to say your reactions are a lot of fun to watch! Looking forward to rewatching the show with you

I've always been a big fan of this episode, and watching Darcie react to it made it so much better! Things I noticed that I didn't notice before: OZ is wearing a goat on his shirt. Does this mean something? Also Joyce is not looking at the monster when the spell breaks and she screams "OMG!" is that because she just realized she almost killed Buffy? Also, Where is Willow's bedroom? In season 1 I could have sworn it was on the 2nd floor of her house. In season 2 it looked liked Angel entered through a sliding back door (So I assumed first floor). In this episode it appeared both on the second floor in the first scene and then the second floor in the last seen with a window pan into her room. In any any case, love it.

So, why was the fake Cordy death scene actually a good move? I of course hated it in the moment, but later upon reflection actually kind of liked it, for what I think the reason behind it is. Cordy was this character we all kind of disliked in the beginning of the show. I mean, she was a shallow mean girl who bullied out favorite characters. Over time she has grown as a character, but our view of her can still be tainted by her past in the show. So, faking her death, was a slap in the face moment for the fans to realize just how much we've actually come to love Cordelia. Faced with losing her, we all realized just how much it would hurt to lose her. I've seen some reactors in tears before the Buffy let's out that it was a fake. So, ai actually like it more because it made me appreciate Cordelia more and realize she's outgrown that past shallow mean girl from season 1. Well, mostly.

Who cheats on him, CONSTANTLY. Who just cheated on him AGAIN, which is why he's here. Angel says that Dru cheats on Spike because Spike is SEXUALLY INADEQUATE and doesn't understand "Foreplay" WHY WOULD YOU TAKE "ADVICE" FROM THAT GUY??? But Buffy does. Buffy lets Murderer Spike walk because she trusts Love Guru Spike. Why???? And that's why Buff is no longer a hero. And that's why this episode sucks. JMO.

Because Spike gave her and Angel some idiot "romantic advice". SPIKE! Who has spent DECADES with a crazy woman.

1) He helps her against Angel 2) You'll never see me again, I blood well hope. What actually happened? 1) Spike ran out on the fight, abandoning Buffy to (he thought) be killed by Angel. 2) Spike is back in town, LESS THAN SIX MONTHS LATER He's not exactly trustworthy. And yet, Buffy lets him get away, AGAIN. Why?

Jessica Roth

…DECADES. Buffy spent pretty m,uch all of last season trying to kill him. Finally, she let him get away, on two conditions.

Now, let's recall. Spike has killed HUNDREDS of people for d

(Suzanne Krull died some time recent-ish. One hopes that Marsters didn't stop by to "have" one for the road…) So how does Buffy respond to the news that Spike (whose previous crimes she let go unpunished) has likely committed yet ANOTHER murder, another life gone to soon? Dig this: she rolls her eyes at the police tape and says "your work?" Because apparently Buffy now finds Spike KILLING INNOCENTS to be soooooo BORING. WTF?

Jessica Roth

Buffy used to see saving lives as her Sacred Duty; when Jenny died she ran herself so ragged she caught the flu (even though nobody else in her friend group did). Now? She comes upon evidence that Spike killed the shopkeeper at Uncle Bob's Magic Castle (played by actress Suzanne Krull) and perhaps even performed a necrophiliac rape on her corpse, if we can judge by Willow's reaction to Spike's talk of "having".

Jessica Roth

What is, of course, dying is Buffy's heroism and morality.
