After years of dormancy, Sony-owned studio Sucker Punch has finally revealed its sequel to 2020's Ghost of Tsushima. It's called Ghost of Yotei, and it launches exclusively on PlayStation 5 in 2025. But the recent presentation was chock-full of other games, too, including lingering remasters from times past, like Soul Reaver and Lunar. And -- yes, indeed! -- the rumors surrounding Horizon: Zero Dawn Remastered are real, too. It's very simple really. When the left create something by themselves, you get Concord, and you get the result that Concord delivered. So the only way they can spread their message to a wide (but considerably shrinking) audience is by infiltrating loved and respected IP and shoehorning in their nonsense which a very large % of people have zero interest in. See: Star Wars, LOTR, Dragon Age, Suicide Squad, Spiderman, etc etc etc. Sony, Microsoft, Ubisoft etc. in for a very rough ride in the future. The trick to the movie theaters is getting AMC A-list. IMAX showings usually have quiet crowds since it's a premium format, and it's covered under A-List. I've also found that the crowds are very polite for smaller movies, which happens to be the ones I like.

In a series of good to god tier RPGs, Final Fantasy XIII (and her sequels) is the only one that is truly awful. It's a glorified movie that makes you read an encyclopedia to understand the good parts, and "combat" that's about as exciting as your average mobile fare. I'm trying to muster up the courage to go back for that platinum, but god it's a slog of a not game.

The options aren’t “be inclusionary to all or be inclusionary to nobody.” It’s so easy to see the goalposts moving no matter what they do. “You let people have top surgery scars, but not prosthetics?! You let people have top surgery scars but didn’t make a wheelchairs an option?! You let people have top surgery scars but didn’t let them have a shriveled arm birth defect?!” Games have had various levels of character creations, inclusions, features, etc for decades now. Nobody gets up in arms about it until it’s doing something they don’t like. If you don’t like the top surgery scars, just say you don’t like them rather than making bad-faith arguments.

The large majority of people don't care about playing as a female character. They care about token diversity, women who are 'strong' but really just arrogant and insufferable, which leads to terrible characters. Except people can’t make any character they want because this feature is explicitly exclusionary. Do you want a c-section scar? Nope. Heart surgery scar? Nope. Single mastectomy scar? Nope. Any other scar that can be placed where it has deep personal meaning to you? Nope. Body scars that can be placed anywhere and resized have been in RPGs for well over a decade at this point, and would’ve made everyone happy. No excuse for a new AAA game to not be inclusive.

There was nothing wrong with Corey Barlog using his experience as a father to influence the new direction for God of War. There was nothing wrong with Neil Druckmman drawing from his own cultural heritage to influence The Last of Us Part II. While it is often mentioned how welcoming and kind this community is, the comments under more recent Patreon posts have lacked empathy and often come across as needlessly rude.

Chris’s take on what is considered pandering is so brain dead. Back then it was games that had mass appeal to the player base that were actively buying and supporting the games. Today developers and publishers are actively making decisions that truly pander to a small yet very loud group of twitter warriors and in doing so actively work to alienate those that have played, loved, and invested in these games all these years. There's nothing wrong with the scars in Dragon Age. Trans people exist. It's optional. I'm glad the choice is there so people can make whatever characters they want. The world isn't ending. I’ve mentioned this before but Sony is holding out for PS6. We’re gonna get a hand full of first party titles and a ton of 3rd party games until then. When the PS6 drops, Sony wants to hit the ground running. They already are on pace to sell over 100 million units. Plus GTA6 will make the PS5 the must have console. The next gen Xbox may be a big hit. Only time will tell but Sony isn’t risking that happening. Which is why I think the PS6 will hit the ground sprinting.

I think there’s a real conversation to be had about the inclusion of top surgery scars, but I think attaching it to “How come you can have this, but not this” brings the conversation down and is deflecting on your part. There’s a ton of things character creators do or don’t let you do. This is the first BioWare game I’m aware of that even lets you do anything to the character’s body proportions. My honest to god good faith guess as to why it’s limited with breasts and butts is physics and clothes/armor models having to adjust for them. It’s the same reason this is the first game player females can have long hair (but where were the people complaining about the lack of feminine hair options?) Anyway, if you want to talk about top surgery, pronouns, whatever else, talk about it. Just talk about it without tying it to another nebulous issue though.

AC Shadows is going to have soft sales whether it ships now or in three months. The delay has nothing to do with polish or adding more content. It's over for this exec team once sales figures are in, so they pushed it back to give leadership a few extra months to strategize before the board and shareholders shake things up. Ubisoft will be a very different entity by next winter.

Regarding the movie theatre conversation -- on multiple occasions recently I have gone to see violent, R rated movies, and parents have brought in their screaming, crying infant. Every single time they refuse to take their baby out of the theater. I get it. It's challenging to go see a movie when you have a newborn. But seriously, who the fuck brings an infant to see Oppenheimer and Deadpool and Wolverine? (I had the same experience at both of these films.) I just dont get it. My counterpoint to this would be that continuing a story and remaining in one setting should help game development take less time and be cheaper. They talked this episode about Yakuza doing that, reusing a lot of assets and animations, and cranking games out like crazy. Gene’s spoken to the director about that, and even he said he was confused why games feel like they have to reinvent the wheel every entry. By that same logic though, Spider-Man 2 should have had that same advantage, but they somehow ballooned their budget to a stupid amount. So I guess if that’s going to happen with Sony studios, you’re right, maybe anthology is the way to go. If you’re going to go big, go as big as possible, I guess.

You're asserting that a fantasy world that doesn't mirror ours is a pointless exercise, but I'm wondering what your basis for that is. As I said, there are often metaphors that mirror the real world in fantasy and you seem to agree with that, but that is not the "point" of the genre. The "point" is not to mirror the real world. That literally goes against the definition of the genre. You're making two different points. One is that the "point" of fantasy is to mirror the real world. That is not true. Your second point is that trans people don't inherently go against the logic of a fantasy setting. That is true. Mixing the two makes your argument weaker. Instead of making a grandiose claim about fantasy as a genre you would be better served arguing that trans people in the fantasy world of Dragon Age is consistent with that world.

Just like with the false Japanese goverment assertion (which you did not respond to) this is not true. Ubisoft did not "falsify a Japanese historian". He is a Japanese consultant/ translator and said the game was being received well by the Japanese community. But some did not take his comment at face value because he used to work for SBI. Which is fine if you want to dismiss his opinion that way. But I can't find were Ubisoft claimed he was a historian. Maybe the propped up his comments, but that is hardly a controversial thing to do. Or did a low level Ubisoft employee call him a historian? No offense, but your comments make me wonder if you actually read about the stuff you are saying is a big deal. Because it seems like these are just statements copied from anti-woke youtube and Asmongold Streams. With no actual interest in finding out if their statements are true. It is a big bummer that the entire conversation about Ghost of Yōtei focused on the protagonist being a woman rather than their impressions of the game itself. I know some people are upset that they are taking an anthology series approach rather than continuing Jin’s story, but this seems like a very smart business decision. Games are taking 4-5-6 years to develop and doing traditional sequels or trilogies means you won’t finish a story for almost a decade. Treating each game as its own unique and standalone story while leveraging the IP is an excellent idea. I was also very pleased with the end of Ghost of Tsushima and satisfied with where Jin’s story left off.

The "Japanese Government'' did not give a statement about their ''displeasure'' for the game. A representative of NHK party of japan asked the government to comment on AC, to which the foreign ministry gave such generic response and they quite literally said ''It wasn't their concern''. They did say the game should not violate public order or morals, but that was more a broad statement about all media pertaining to Japan. And the only reason they even made that statement is because the NHK formally asked them to. The usual suspects want to make this into something unprecedented, but it is literally a nothing burger (not everything about AC is, but this narrative is)

You’re wading into semantics here. Mainstream fantasy from LOTR, to Star Wars, to D&D to Narnia, etc. mirrors our world to make a point. Whether it be allegories or unavoidable comparisons to WW1, Vietnam, racism, WW2, religion or whatever else, the point is to point out something fundamentally true about our world in the framing of the fantasy one. That’s the crux of storytelling in general. A story in a fantasy world where absolutely nothing mirrors our world in any way would just be an excercise in absurdity and not be interesting in the slightest. It brings me back to my original point. If every fantasy story of any consequence has components of the real world in it, because you need that to tell a story people engaging in it will relate to, then there’s no more reason for trans people to be out of place than there is for humans in general, or sickness, or war to be.

The downplaying of the issue surrounding AC Shadows just isn’t accurate. This is a big issue for Ubisoft. How much it will effect sales is unknown but when the Japanese government issues a statement about their displeasure with the game you have a problem. Also, the absolute catastrophe of Ubisoft lying about their supposed Japanese historian who was entirely discredited and then disappeared entirely. To say it’s a minor issue that I don’t know why Ubisoft address is in a word, ignorant. It just seems that the crew really haven’t paid any attention as to what is going on around Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Also Chris not saying this game is important to Ubisoft when AC is essentially their biggest IP is laughable.

But I’d also argue that trans people would fit into most major fantasy worlds with no issue. Again, almost every series explores gender roles, mental health, and has a concept of medicine. @Jamin great take, if people focused more on creating artwork that was reflective of their own genuine upbringing and culture I think the creative world would be way more interesting. And that includes work created by LGBT/minority groups, Tales of Kenzera comes to mind as a recent example of the latter. my least favorite thing in the universe is media that tries to pander to everyone in the name of "inclusivity," resulting in watered-down bland diluted pablum that supposedly appeals to everyone but in reality appeals to no one (Concord being a recent excellent example). There’s politics, there’s racism, there’s war, there’s religion, there’s love, and there’s loss. I can't speak for Colin, but here's how I see it. At any point if one tries to be inclusive and have representation, then it's fair game to critique why something ISN'T represented, as therein lies an agenda based on the initial purpose. If you can have scarring, why can't you have big breasts? Both represent a select group of people, so why is only one included, and the other excluded? This is the same argument for any representation. If you can have a white character, why can't you have a black character? If you can have a man, why can't you have a woman? Using that logic, the absence of the opposite will always be seen as controversial because the whole point of the initial action is to be inclusive. The question then becomes, why was one included and not the other? That's what creates the divide and the perception of the agenda. In my views, people just need to be more understanding and accepting of people who create things based on THEIR identity. I am a white man. If I create media, it will be heavily influenced by my upbringing and experiences. I should not be criticized for not representing black people, or trans, or Muslims, or Christians. I can certainly be criticized and called out for disrespecting them, but I should not be criticized for not including them in my creative ideas. When Colin says he notices, he is saying he notices the developers pushing the idea that they are touting themselves as inclusive. They are making it a focal point, trying to show they are welcoming people by doing this. In reality, the point is mute because again, why can't you have big breasts? What it really is, is the developer is creating media based on their experience. It is actually NOT representative of all people, nor should it be. But they will never say that. That's the controversey. They can't say it's not representative of all people, because that defeats the very reason they say they are doing it. In my opinion, the solution is to just make things for yourself, and tout it as just that (not, "I make this to represent all people and be inclusive"). It's then up to the audience to deal with it and respect that individual representation.
