For some, it symbolizes the platform's lack of care for the future of its own hardware and, for others, a sign that the green team has their eyes on the next generation instead. In a surprise move, it is not Xbox who stepped on the rake this week! PlayStation has sneakily experienced a troublesome year much like Xbox between Concord, the rollercoaster ride that is Helldivers 2, and now the pricing of the PlayStation 5 pro. Of all our write-ins this week, 90% were asking one question: Did Xbox dodge a bullet by not going down this hardware rabbit hole? Naturally, the Dukes debate and discuss the ins-and-outs of this initially innocent announcement from PlayStation. In other news, Xbox will be returning to Japan for their own Tokyo Game Show event in 2024 and State Of Decay 2 support is finally over! Not to mention you have to pay $80 a year, or $560 for a 7 year generation just to access multiplayer functionality. That coupled with cheaper games makes buying a PC a much better value proposition in terms of gaming performance per dollar. Not to mention much better 2k high FPS support on PC which is most enthusiasts preference. It’s an extremely niche product only efficient for enthusiasts that hate PC gaming.

By that I mean of course they didn’t dodge a bullet, because they don’t have a consumer base who would buy an Xbox Series X Pro model by the millions like Sony. That’s it, that is why they’re not doing one. And the rebuttal may be: “Hugh, they’re doing a console refresh in 2026 and a handheld; They didn’t need to!” Sure, but that doesn’t change the fact an Xbox Pro would be destined to fail. PS5 Pro is going to sell millions of units, meanwhile the only time I see the $600 Series X with 2 TB storage mentioned is as the butt of a joke. I have a Series X and love it, so no fan boy crap here. Big fan, keep it up.

Stellar Blade, Ronin, Helldivers 2, Rebirth, Last of us part 2 remastered, Astro, Silent Hill 2, Lego Horizon. Concord is absolutely a total failure. If Game Science didn’t want to hold PS5 and PC until the Xbox version was ready, that makes sense…why force everyone else to wait? This is a Baldur’s Gate 3 scenario. MSFT could’ve helped with the development of the Xbox version if they wanted it out at the same time.

When you break it down and compare the price with the new 2TB Series X ($599USD including a disc drive). The PS5 Pro would cost you $779USD (console + disco drive). That’s a $180 price difference for a tech upgrade which I don’t think is out for the realm of reason. Some more critical thought would be appreciated, by all accounts tell us how you feel from a personal point of view, but balance it with some critical thoughts.

2024-09-13 01:27:24 +0000 UTCA disk drive ps5 at launch 11/20 was $500 which is $600 today adjusted for inflation. The pro plus a separate disk drive is 780. So the difference is 180. A 1tb m.2 is anywhere from 50-100 dollars on Amazon. So the pro upgrade is actually ~$100 in real dollar

I think final fantasy rebirth or 16 would show significantly better resolution and frames.

2024-09-12 17:22:52 +0000 UTCThe Steam Deck OLED is a handheld device, plus an OLED. A regular LED Steam Deck would be $400 max. PS5 Pro is a mid-gen upgrade for a console device. Mid-gen consoles are normally close to the base model's price. Sony's pricing is more a result of lacking competition with Microsoft. Steam Deck OLED and PS5 Pro are not comparable. Handheld devices are regularly more expensive due to portability. Compare the specifications and prices of a gaming laptop vs a gaming desktop. TLDR; It is insane
