It’s February 2020. Let’s start streaming what’s new.
_______
Readers, as you know, there are 4 streaming platforms currently trying to get your attention with mainstream shows and movies, along with original content that are exclusive to them. So here are the ones for each of them I think are worth your time.
Let’s start with Netflix, where we’ll finally be able to see the second season of Altered Carbon
/Set in the year 2384 in a distopian future where people have the ability to transfer their consciousnesses into new bodies as a way to live forever, Altered Carbon is about a rebel-turned-investigator Takeshi Kovacs who was placed into a new body after serving a 250 year prison sentence, in order to solve the murder of 1 Percenter Laurens Bancroft. After he entered a new body of course. Season 2 will be premiering February 27th 2020, with Anthony Mackie replacing Joel Kinnaman as the new sleeve for Takeshi/
Honestly, I hate that I haven’t watched any of this series yet, because it’s very relevant to my interests
And outside of it being sci-fi, its relevant to my interests because while I’m not afraid of death, I never want to die...?
Like, I completely understand and respect that death is a natural part of life, just like Yoda said. But the actual ACT of dying? Not gonna lie; I’m not a fan
So if there’s EVER an option that’ll allow me to transfer my consciousness, soul, karma, chi, whatever it is I have into another body, a robot, a living room chair, WHATEVER, I’ll take it. I don’t care how I live forever, as long as I live forever.
It’s an irrational want, I’m aware; I’m FULLY aware. But I WANT IT.
It’s also been a long time coming for the premiere of THIS highly anticipated adaptation premiering as an exclusive Netflix original series, Locke & Key
/Based on the graphic novels, it’s about a group of siblings who moves into an ancestral home of theirs after the murder of their father. They soon find out that scattered throughout said home, are these weird skeleton keys that unlock multiple -- and dangerous -- secrets throughout. Every episode will be available to stream starting February 7, 2020/
Now I’ve never read the graphic novels, but I’ve been following this project back when it was in development hell. And trust me; it’s been in Development Hell for quite a while.
Like out of all the projects that’ve been there, this one pretty much came in second place for most talked about.
The first one being Stephen King’s The Dark Tower, and...well, we all know how THAT turned out.
Nevertheless, as someone who isn’t familiar with the source material, I’m looking forward to it. It gives off MAD Netflix Sabrina vibes just from set design and the look of the production alone, and I’m kinda interested in seeing if it’s able to compete on the same level as either Sabrina or Stranger Things.
I ALSO wanna see what all of the fuss is about. Motherfuckers been trying to adapt this series for almost 6 years, so it HAS to be GOOD, right?
Anyway, the sequel to the Netflix Original movie “To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before” ALSO comes out in February, “To All The Boys: PS I Still Love You”
Still a better title than the majority of the Isekai anime currently out now. Don’t ask me why I’m comparing them. I’m just pissed.
/Premiering on February 12, it continues the romance Lara Jean ended up on when pretty much all of her previous crushes received letters of her admitting her feelings about them. And now that she’s in a relationship with one of said crushes, she’s taken by surprise when a new one from her childhood joins the battle/
Don’t worry; I can guarantee you he’s not another Fire Emblem Character
Now I never watched the first one, but I did see the trailer for it, and thought it was a really cute premise.
I was also stoked finding out that they got such a good Asian American actress like Lana Condor to be the star
And I’m not gonna lie; once I saw the trailer for this one and found out who she ended up with, I was pretty disappointed.
Then I saw how she reacted when she saw Ol’ Dude at the END of it, and I just turned into Issa Rae for a minute
(I’m rooting for everybody black)
If you love romantic comedies and loved the first one, more than likely you’ll probably enjoy this.
And if you’re like me and love romantic comedies but never watched the first one, this might be a pretty decent double feature.
And speaking of everybody black, let’s talk about Netflix’s first African original series, Queen Sono
/Premiering on February 28th, It’s about a South African spy who finds herself on an EXTREMELY dangerous mission after uncovering information regarding the assassination of her mother/
And honestly, THIS. LOOKS. DOPE.
I’ve been looking for a Jack Ryan alternative for quite some time now, and I’m glad that one of my choices is a female spy trying to keep Africa safe
I just hope that it's GOOD, and that it gets renewed for more seasons once it proves just how good it is.
There’ll also be tons of NON-Exclusive movies available on Netflix over the course of February. The ones I recommend are the 2010 remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street, the Dragon Quest animated movie Dragon Quest: Your Story, Pokemon: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution, which is the CGI remake of Pokemon: The First Movie, Adam Sandler’s classic Happy Gilmore, and John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum
Hulu only has ONE exclusive premiering in February, but just like Netflix’s Queen Sono it’s ALSO about the culture in the form of the rebooted for television High Fidelity
/Premiering on Valentine’s Day, Zoe Kravitz plays Rob, a record shop owner in Brooklyn that’s trying to reconcile with why she feels like shit by confronting five of the partners she’s had in the past and try to get a sense of closure. Or get laid; whichever comes first./
What’s great about this is that in the movie, Zoe’s character was actually portrayed by Early 2000s Heart Throb turned Late 2010s B-Movie Action Star, John Cusack
Add that to the fact that Lisa Bonet of The Cosby Show -- and Zoe Kravitz mom -- was ALSO in the original 2000 movie as Marie DeSalle, tells me that this is the PERFECT project for her.
(Pauses) Yeah, I’ll watch it.
There are also NON-Exclusive movies that’ll be making their way to Hulu this month, including 300, Patrick Swayze’s Ghost, Hitch, Kevin Costner’s Robin Hood, Super 8, American Psycho, Being John Malcovich, and the 1993 live action Dennis the Menace movie; all I recommend.
Then we have the exclusives over on Amazon Prime, in which I know one is relevant to some people’s interest and the other is more relevant to mine.
So lets start with the one that’s less my cup of tea, Honey Boy
/Making itself available on Amazon Prime February 7th, Honey Boy is pretty much the memoir of actor Shia LeBouf transitioning from childhood actor to adult actor, and his estranged relationship with his father...who’s played by Shia LeBouf/
And the reason why it’s not my cup of tea is mostly do the simple fact that...I don’t really CARE for Shia LeBouf
Like, as an actor, not a meme
(Just Do It Clip)
Like, I’m sure he’s a swell guy...when he’s on the right medication
But I always found him annoying on Even Stevens. His time on Transformers was just...exhausting for me. I would enjoy Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull a WHOLE lot more if he wasn’t in it...
Honestly, the only movie that I find him tolerable in is...Holes, and that’s saying a LOT
But I know others appreciate his talent and are looking forward to this hitting Prime because they couldn’t catch it when it was in theaters in November, so go on and live your best life.
Meanwhile I’ll be over here, enjoying Hunters
/It’s produced by Jordan Peele, created by David Weil and starring Al Pacino. Inspired by true events, it tells the story of a group of Nazi hunters in late 1970’s New York City, and premieres on Amazon Prime February 21st/
Now I’m only halfway through with Amazon’s “The Boys” upon the making of this video, and I get the comparison everybody’s making to it.
It’s The Boys meets Inglourious Basterds in that regard
But to me, Hunters looks like a version of The Boys that I’ll appreciate more than the ACTUAL version of The Boys
And that’s mostly due to the fact that I don’t care for superhero deconstruction that just ends up being the author wanting to show us just how much he hates superheroes, which is what The Boys is to me; I’m just gonna be honest with you all.
With Hunters, however, not only is it based on true events, but I don’t have to feel irritated about the showrunner or the show writers trying to get me to see superheroes in a different light, just because they have a nihilistic and ornery criticism toward a genre that’s over 80 years old.
And that’s because instead, it’s Nazis. And FUCK Nazis
Amazon Prime will ALSO have Ghost and Super 8 -- just like Hulu -- but will also have Warren Beatty’s live-action adaptation of Dick Tracy. ALSO starring Al Pacino. Another film I highly recommend.
We finally got some exclusive premieres over on Disney+ happening in February, starting with the February 7th premiere of the movie Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made
/It’s about a kid named Timmy Failure, who, through an impressive combination of “he’s so mature for his age” and Rugrats level Imagination projection, is a self-proclaimed detective that -- with the help of his 1500 pound Polar Bear partner -- has to find the person who stole his mothers scooter./
So my first impression of this trailer was that this was originally a Fox Searchlight film
And that upon the acquisition of Fox, since it was already made, Disney made the decision NOT to release it theatrically but that they had no problem branding it as a Disney movie because of the family friendly tone, and made it a Disney+ exclusive.
Not that it’s stopping me from wanting to see this, because it’s not.
Just like I felt about Amazon Prime’s Troop Zero, this looks like a pretty heart-felt kid and family film and I was pretty much interested the moment I saw the trailer.
But at this point in my life, it’s surprisingly interesting for me to tell the difference between an ACTUAL live-action Disney movie, and a Fox movie that was REBRANDED as a Disney movie.
But y’all don’t wanna hear about little Timmy Failure. Y’all not even HERE for Timmy Failure. Y’all here for Star Wars
/Specifically the seventh and final season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, premiering February 21st/
Honestly, there isn’t anything I can say about this show that everybody and they mama ‘n them have already said face to face, in a blog, in a video, in bed, WHEREVER
All I can recommend is that if you want the official retelling of The Clone Wars, since Genndy Tartakovsky’s mini-series is no longer canon, make sure you watch this show now that it’ll have an official ending.
Which is something that I’m probably gonna end up doing because I’ve never watched this show before.
I mean, what?
There will also be more Disney properties that will be hitting the service in February. Including Toy Story 4, the 2004 adaptation Around The World in 80 Days starring Jackie Chan, and the 1988 comedy Big Business starring Bette Midler and Lily Tomlin
But Readers, I know that what I just listed over the course of everything coming out on all four of these platforms are exactly that: a FEW
So your homework assignment for the day is to write in the comment section below any exclusives or original series that are premiering in January for Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime or Disney Plus that I may have missed
Or, if you feel like sharing with the rest of the class, which ones out of what I mentioned you’re mostly hype about.
Either way, I’d love to know your thoughts.
