He's slowly but surely making progress, and is already starting to change his outlook on life in such a short time. The fact that he went to Kaji for advice speaks volumes! Yes we (audience) see a cool half & half character design but in reality he looked "odd" and like a freak to ppl, its even why he had to learn to fight against the bullies.

And because of his trauma and isolation he associates hyper independence with strength, and depending on others with being weak. Which why it meant a lot for the literal top dog Ume and other stronger characters like Kaji to teach him otherwise. I honestly adore that the show isn't all fights and we get a heartwarming delinquent anime π₯Ήβ€οΈ
