just in case y'all forgot since season 1 was quite a while back, it was heavily implied in season 1 that Jinshi is not the emperor's brother but the son of Concubine Ah-Duo who already left the rear palace. Maomao kinda figured that all out already but she didn't think the swapped baby was actually Jinshi. And she also probably thought she was thinking too deep into it.

The way Shisui talked about the Empress leading the charge on the ban with slaverly, and eunuchs has me wanting to add to that. Like you mentioned Edward she was looking sentimental in that scene possibly because her partner was enslaved for impregnating her. Now she's helping her sister, by filling in for her when she might have to do undercover things in the background, explains why she's sometimes no where be seen, and why Loulan is constantly changing her makeup, hair etc. An image of a overly guady consort is what she puts on display, in order conduct their operations smoothly, or whatever is going on because I could be completely talking out my ass lol.

ALSO the stuff the empress dowager is doing is show a fake hand to the enemies and find whoever has been after jinshi and the the two that are pregnant. so ever is behind certain plans are dangerous, especially if the two are separate, because while trying to catch who is trying to oof jinshi she may get killed by the one who tried to abort the babies. we still dont know if suiren the one that faked her death, where could she be cause she def isn't done with schemes

I think that rather than him being mentally delayed at birth due to the birth lines thing, but rather he was going crazy from using lacquer. He may not have realized the thing he was using for his enjoyment was also what was making him sick.

So this made me think of something I’d learned of in college during a course- if you know about Xin Zhui, or Lady Dai, she is one of the “most preserved” bodies of Chinese nobility. Her body was so well preserved that it’s said all of her organs were still intact, her joints were still soft enough that they could be moved, and her skin was still elastic. Lady Dai was buried in multiple coffins, some of which were painted in lacquer- in this episode we see a bunch of brightly colored marks on the floor and around the room. Maomao also made a comment about the room smelling. This made me think that the emperor used to paint, and he possibly painted with lacquer. Lacquer is sap from a tree natively found in China and Japan. Well guess what? Lacquer is also TOXIC. Now something else I realized. In the last episode, I mentioned that the emperor looked as though he was trying to give Jinshi something when he was a child- I think that was possibly solid lacquer. If the emperor indeed was using lacquer, over a prolonged amount of time, it would not be surprising if it made him sick, and eventually killed him. And if his coffin was covered in lacquer? That brings us back to Lady Dai. Lacquer could have helped deter the body from decomposing. I think that’s what happened to the former emperor. This probably would not have been common knowledge back then and would definitely make people think some curse or something magical was occurring (obviously later on lacquer was intentionally applied to coffins for the purpose of trying to deter decay) When I tell you I almost screamed when I made this connection lol! I could be totally wrong on this, but the connections are connecting in my brain.

Plus they said the twins were daughters of a wealthy merchant while I think Laolan father is a high position considering the call him master.

Then there's the whole Empress Dowager making the clinic scene & she was looking all sentimental about it. I feel like she had to have been around for a while to even know about that. Especially considering Shisui hasn't been there that long, but that could just be something else entirely 🤷🏽♂️

Loulan is is probably involved with the abortion creations, or was the one who helped that one lady responsible for the attempt on Jinshi's life, both is more than likely. One thing I remember mentioned is that apparently the old blood in the Empire, aren't really happy with the Emperors decision to introduce new blood into the imperial line. Possible Loulan is an op sent in to handle agents, providing them with the cover of them being her "ladies in waiting". That's just a theory I've been cooking in my head sense I saw this episode yesterday.
