Also it’s implied by the nurse that they start growing more detached and forgetful about their other life the longer the trial runs. Plus, lbr, Elisabeth just didn’t want to admit or internalize that she hated herself, so she basically dissociated and blamed her self-harming actions on “Sue”. Spinal fluid regenerates much like muscle fibers repair themselves in your sleep, but I assume the switch itself leaves the unoccupied body in some sort of fictional stasis (or else brain death/asphyxiation would be an issue). That does bring into question if both bodies still age when not in use, though.

As over the top as some of the imagery was, even to the point of being hilarious, the commentary is painfully true and uncomfortable seeing this depiction of self-hatred, twisted self-love, and the desperate desire for approval and validation as well as it's cause and enablers. "You're the only lovable part of me" just about broke me. The blood spraying into the audience cut me deep cause I picked it up, or at least saw it, as her blood literally being on them, or "on their hands," so to speak. The audience that created the demand is just as complicit as the higher ups that enforce and provide it. Even down to how you see all the "normal" topless women and then ElisaSue in contrast to where it's like "you like seeing titties so much right? Fine." And she grows one out her face and it dangles in center frame, in focus, on the screen. "This is what you wanna see? She's dying, but this is what you came for." The little girl (don't remember if there were male cildren) being brought into this, as young girls being indoctrinated into this sort of mentality young, dressed in a blue dress like Sue was and excited to be there. Mind you that the expectation of the parents was for their daughter to see topless women dance and perform for these people in power and for the pleasure of the audience.

In the public eye, and often in private relationships, women are valued for their youth. There are countless anti-aging creams, skin brighteners, makeup made to mimic youthfulness (rosy cheeks, red lips, bright eyes, etc.), risky surgeries, painful clothing and shoes, etc. etc. etc., all geared towards women of increasingly younger ages. Products and procedures like this that used to be geared towards middle-aged women are now marketed to young girls who have absolutely no reason to even know about wrinkle cream and AHA and BHA. No 11 year old needs a "skincare routine" beyond washing their face and using lotion if their skin is dry. Men are allowed to age in the public eye and not be scrutinized to nearly the same extent. Whereas women become largely invisible past a certain age (look up Invisible Woman Syndrome). All of this is why someone like Elisabeth, (played by Demi Moore who is gorgeous at 61 years old) could still have severe body image issues. She is stunning, but she is not young, and she will obsess over every stretch mark, wrinkle, and age spot because she is told that those things will make her worthless. There's commentary about how non-attractive people are treated as well (when you lose your beauty, or if you are not "beautiful" to start, people can be very cruel to you), but this comment is long enough.
