Honestly, I hated this show for the first 4-5 episodes. I dropped it multiple times. I pushed through and now enjoy it quite a bit. Still, a show shouldn't take that long to be interesting. It just seemed like a mindless quirky cooking show at first.

2024-10-02 01:15:48 +0000 UTCi think part of it is that toshiro is angry at laios in the beginning of their relationship for being bad at social cues and "acting weird," then to push him away he uses classic Japanese tactics of being subtly mean and then gets even angrier at him for not noticing. the entire time, laios genuinely believes that they're friends and so toshiro doesn't have a right to get mad at laios for acting that way if he won't even tell him how he feels etc. it's also in part of laios being implied to be neurodivergent in some way so you really can't fault him for not understanding as well as the fact that the author was trying to make a social commentary on japanese social culture and how they're taught to not be upfront with people, which is something she doesn't like. so the situation that people are talking about is basically not all the things laios ended up doing later (which btw he wasn't admiring the dragon when falin got caught, he was just hungry and out of it-- plus toshiro didn't care that marcille used black magic [you said laios did, which he didn't] and would have done the same, as he pointed out it's just laios' "attitude" which makes him seem very hypocritical), but specifically about their relationship which started way before that and tooshiro really had no reason to be angry at him when he couldn't be upfront with laios etc.

Hell, when he see’s Falin killing everyone his 1st thoughts are “thats so cool” dude needed to get smacked at LEAST once. Not to mention part of it is his fault Falin was killed in the 1st place. As the leader of the group he was the reason they were starved fighting the dragon in the 1st place and THEN he was too busy admiring the dragon so Falin had to come in & save him. Then he uses something illegal that ultimately resulted in her turning into THAT??? THEN he’s just gonna say it like it’s no big deal & looks like he’s just having a blast the whole time. No wonder Shuro was pissed at him. We know as the audience that Laios’ group isn’t gonna die & gonna recover Falin, but the characters in the story aren’t allowed to be sure of that. They both got their hits in & made up. Shuro even offers to illegally smuggle Laios & his group to his country if they’re in some deep shit, which is an insanely kind thing to do Both were in the wrong, both made up. The hate’s unnecessary & people were probably seeing it from 1 side due to us seeing things from Laios’ POV & him being the MC If we were following Shuro from the beginning the reactions would be much different

The part where it’s the norm for people NOT to speak up and to NOT be forward/direct. It’s more acceptable for people to pick up on things through subtle social cues instead of outright expressing their feelings and saying “hey I don’t like you for this exact reason maybe we can work on that”. So the point is for him to be like this, and to show him figuring out that hey it’s kind of a shitty way to go about things because sometimes it’s just not going to cut it. I’m not saying people can’t dislike him for it or dislike that he did it, I’m just saying he was written that way on purpose to get a message across to people that do this (esp. in the author’s home country) (also there’s a lot of allegory and life-lesson/life-advice Imagery and dialogue throughout this series is why I say this) (also don’t mind me I’m yapping)

But in an interview the author said that Laios is not autistic. She wrote him in a way that was normal to her. So this got people arguing. Some people took the quote at face value, saying that the author denied Laios being autistic. But others say that the sentence makes it seem that the author has some levels of autism, and she does not want people to look at Laios for his autistic traits only. Similar to how people with autism not wanting people to look/treat them different for being autistic.

So Shuro has an incredibly awkward relationship with his family and retainers.

That's kind of a weird viewpoint for me and I don't know how anyone who's read the manga or watched the show could think that. Shuro just obviously comes from a very different culture where reading the room is incredibly important, and Laios is awful at reading the room, so they inevitably clash over that. It'd be another situation entirely if Shuro was making fun of Laios for it or trying to make his life difficult, but that's not what's happening. Shuro also just seems too stubborn/"polite" to speak up, and so it's also largely his own fault for not making an effort to communicate with someone who has obvious communication difficulties.

"Laios is 'normal', he's just awkward," "Marcille and Falin are just close friends, that's just how girl friends are," etc. etc. Far beyond a subconscious assumption that characters are straight and/or neurotypical. It's forced arguing over a headcanon that doesn't affect anyone watching, they are just often deeply uncomfortable with the suggestion that characters could potentially deviate from the "norm", which ALSO isn't ever confirmed.

He is good rep even if he wasn't written explicitly to be autistic, and no one's forcing the theory on anyone else. I'm also just convinced that the reason why people rally so hard against this headcanon is because they view autism as some big huge "bad" thing instead of, y'know, just one characteristic of a person. And probably also because most TV media portrays autism as a sole defining trait of characters instead of bothering to make characters complex. In a similar vein, it's also why I think people rally so hard against the Farcille headcanons but that's a whole other issue. And before anyone comes in here with the "but Kui said...!" stuff--that's why it's a headcanon! Because it isn't confirmed! It literally would not be FANon if it were explicitly canon. Funnily enough, there's a book series where the number of autistic readers identifying with the main character made the author realize that she had it herself (The Murderbot Diaries. Great series btw). Not saying that's happening here; just that you can unintentionally write an autistic character.

It felt like a massive plot device at first but at the the way it's told to us or even utilized in the lore doesn't make it seem that bad. Considering how dark this show can be to black resurrection magic and how Fallin should have been dead I wouldn't be surprised if they actually "killed" characters in the future permanently. Every character is so fleshed out, has a reason for being where they are and doing what they do, and it's so clearly telegraphed. This is also probably the moment where Kabru became one of my favourite characters.
