I think you misunderstood the sister here. She wanted to get away from her husband and have a break, she also wanted some coffee. But she is pregnant and in the snow so making the trek to wherever the coffee ended up feeling like a tough task and when she saw a coffee pot in the neighbor's house - she thought she'd ask for a cup. She was gonna ask the guy but he didn't hear her. It wasn't that weird that she asked the lady, a lot of the lady's weirdness ********SPOILER*******is revealed to be because she is severed.
