And they also chose to try and "localize" the dialogue in many ways. For ex. Miyamura tells Shindou "Go and die" not Piss off.

It does feel like things were cut; I guess this is something that is better to read? Someone in the comments said that season 2 revealed everything cut, so I guess I'll hold off until then.

My reasoning is that if I think about this playing out in real life, most people wouldn’t pick up on what he meant with the second “suki”. Hori says she likes him then basically brushes it off as her saying she likes his hands. To which he responds. We all know how he meant it. Hori on the other hand did not and it isn’t because she is dense or hiding feelings it’s just extremely unclear in this context. Like most normal people would, she just assumed that he was responding to her comment . That’s why she is so shocked in eps4. She never would have thought that he would be the one to say that. Also gotta consider is character. Aside from the head but he has never been the one to initiate stuff. So on top of it already not being clear, it is out of character as well. In that scene she genuinely thought he was talking about her hands. In this one there is no place or setting that would change the interpretation of what he said.

2024-09-03 04:36:31 +0000 UTCWell... sorta but actually no. Hori did NOT misunderstand Miyamura in the prior episode, people understand reality and still reject it if they're not ready for it. The subtitles don't convey all the subtext, but they were definitely hinting it in each others' direction in the prior episode. Hori understood what he was saying in ep3, but neither of them were cognitively or emotionally ready to acknowledge those feelings yet. He's being more "crystal clear" in this episode but this was intended to be inferred and it's not a translation issue, subtext =/= subtitles. It's a mature story and the audience should be able to pick up on these cues without grammar technicalities. Miyamura purposefully disguised his feelings in a double entendre in episode 3, the entire point of the scene was showcasing weight of that veiled confession and Hori pausing on it, she's rattled in this episode because he decided to be BLUNT, which is why she says "if I pretend I didn't hear it, maybe we can stay like this a little longer", she knows she's ignoring her feelings but Miyamura pushed the envelope more directly here. Roshi and Sheera got the message, it's a nuanced scene but it's conveyed just fine

Little does Roshi know that he sounded like a character that he and Sheera will be meeting pretty soon. 😏 Also, I'm really glad y'all are enjoying this anime! I love the characters, the comedy, the serious moments, and the fact that it's straight to the point when it comes to the romance between the two leads. Peak high school shenanigans. It's a great anime and I'm glad you both agree! I'm still going to recommend Fruits Basket for y'all to watch when there's room in the schedule because that's another good one, but I also want to recommend Skip & Loafer and Mission: Yozakura Family for the next poll to give y'all a break from the rom coms.

In the last episode Miyamura said, “ore mo suki” talking about hands then said “suki” talking about her. So hori thought that he was just repeating himself. That’s why she responded to him by saying “yeah I heard you”. In this episode he says “Hori san ga suki” so there is no confusion about what he means which is why she is so shocked. With that being said, it is a tough scene to translate because in the English language, the distinction between “I love them(object)” and “I love you(person)” is so big. In English there isn’t ways you can really switch it without sacrificing something from the scene. They either write “I love them” again and don’t capture what miyamura means or write “I love you” and just live with the misunderstandings.

However because the word “suki” is used for both, hori just assumed he was still talking about hands. 'Cause in the context they said they love each others hands but after that said it again without specifying whether they still talking about the hands or themselves. The wholes would look like this: Hori: - I'm in love Miyamura: - ?! Hori: - Your hands! I'm in love with your hand Miyamura: - I'm also in love with your hands Hori: - ... Miyamura: - I'm in love Hori: - I heard you Something like that. Already better context than what they fed you I think

If you don't specify the subject, it can be confusing to know which one is meant. A lot of romance anime use that confusion as a trope to create half-assed confessions like Hori's ("I like you...r hands! I like your hands!") or to create misunderstandings (ex. "I was just saying 'I like this drink.' Wait, did you think I was saying that I like YOU?!")

Hori did a little slip saying how she liked Miyamura, but tied it back to their hands after comparing them, and Miyamura responded saying he liked her hands as well, and repeated it in the same manner she had done like it was a slip of the tongue - but still meaning their hands. I know yall aren't ones to watch shows with the English dub, but when they did the VO for it, that's how it was presented, so I can definitely see the issue with the subtitles with your watch-through. This time around was supposed to be the first time it was taken in a more literal manner, so the previous instance doesn't really count fully towards whatever feelings they had brewing up to now
