MAN, this hits the feels for me. Way back when i transferred to a new HS i was the shy and awkward kid, and the handful of popular girls were the ones to reach out and actually try and befriend me, to the point i ate lunch with teh cheerleaders most of the time. Felt good as one of like 4 anime/vidyagaem in the entire school.

It was very rare for producers to commit to doing more than one season of a romcom. That's why you see so many older. open ended romcoms. In the case of Horimiya, rather than adapting on ongoing manga, they were adapting a completed work. so they decided to spend the one season they had been allowed focusing mostly on the significant interactions and sacrificing a lot of SOL stuff.

2024-08-26 13:45:05 +0000 UTCRegardless of the translation of “love” or “like” the confusion lies in the Japanese word itself. Because the word he said “ore mo suki” then “suki” on its own. So in the context of hori saying “I like your hands” the first one was like a “I like yours too”. The second one to him was “I like you” but it’s the same word for both so hori just thought he was repeating himself about the hands.

It’s just simply because the languages are so different. There have been many times I have noticed that reactors or friends miss certain moments because of translations. Never anything major, just little things like this.

And there's no space for the types of clarification you can provide in books for example.

When they say “suki da yo”, there is some intentional ambiguity in this situation. They are confessing in their own mind, but they know that (since they were already talking about hands) the other person could interpret it as “i like (your hands)”. That’s why it wasn’t a big deal “confession”. The subject at hand (no pun intended ) was a perfect excuse to say those words to each other.

He knows that Miyamura and Hori are into each other but Miyamura is the type to be passive and let things go by so he just wanted to let him know he has a chance whether he wants to admit it or not.

Miyamura said “俺も好きだよ(ore mo suki dayo)” which in this setting would translate to I love them too. But the second one was just “好きだよ(suki dayo). So from miyamura’s perspective he is saying I like you. But because the words are the same “suki dayo” in both, Hori doesn’t pick up on this and assumes he is just repeating himself. This is why she responded by saying “yeah I heard you”.

The reason why Miyamura got piercings and tats wasn't just so he could be himself, but it was actually his own version of self-harm and visibly expressing his sadness. It's pretty sad once you think about it but I like that the show still shows the darker elements in a happier non-depressing tone now that things are better for him.
