Its technically not Ghibli though because it was Hayao Miyazaki's first movie and so it predates Ghibli. Other than that, I would highly recommend Porco Rosso, Princess Mononoke, Laptuta: Castle in the Sky, and Lupin the III: The Castle of Cagliostro. Those are my other favorite Ghibli films.

Nature and myth versus industrialization. Absolutely so glad to see you guys react to a Ghibli film. 2024-07-17 19:23:31 +0000 UTCMiyazaki's movies are known for being confusing. The narrative is rarely linear and a bunch of themes end up intertwined. I once had to analyze this movie and absolutely loved it. I won't talk about everything but some of the main themes were war, the contrast of technology and nature, beauty/acceptance of the self. Throughout the film, Miyazaki was referring to the Iraq war, denouncing the arbitrary bombing of the country. Although (in the film) the war started because the prince (the scarecrow) disappeared, his disappearance quickly became pretext for war and way too much destruction. As for beauty and acceptance of the self themes, we saw Sophie undergoing four different transformations. Whenever her self-esteem was low, she turned into an old woman and when she was being true to herself, you get the rest. At the end she accepted herself as being a young girl with an old soul/mind which is why her hair stays grey. The grey hair was also a symbol of her maturing. The deal with Howl is similar. Using his magic turns him into a monster, so his appearance is extremely important to him. His blond hair was what he thought made him beautiful/normal/non-monstruous/perfect. In the end, he accepts the black hair (his natural hair color) as he becomes okay with not being perfect and since Sophie accepts him either way.

It's so funny, yet somber and tender at the same time. Also, My Neighbor Totoro is maybe Miyazaki's masterpiece. It's understated in the best possible way.

2024-07-17 16:27:21 +0000 UTCI have to admit, I absolutely love this movie but yes there are some things that don't make sense, mainly due to it being compressed 😅 This is my first time watching it in the English dub entirely and I have to say I just don't think that Christian Bale's voice suits Howl's character. The Japanese OG voice is much more youthful and suits his dramatic diva self lol. The deep voice just doesn't fit.

SPOILER: In the book Sophie has 2 younger sisters, the scarecrow prince's true love is one, and Markl the apprentice is a teenager and falls in love with her other sister. Howl's secret identity isn't the bird man but Howell Jenkins, and he's originally a Welsh man from our world.

The most notable being: --Christian Bale was Howl --Billy Crystal was Calcifer -The loop thing originated in this movie. Most recently, which the chat mentioned, Undead Unluck references it. The scene with Andy and Fuuko in the book where they talk about "what dying means to them" is VERY heavily inspired off that scene. -Yes. It's a loop. Chat is trolling you, but yes it's a loop.
