I feel like it still doesn't make sense for them to swap the babies. They claim it was to give Ah Duo's son a better life, but his life wasn't bad in the first place. He went from being the previous emperor's first grandson to being his second son; is that really that much of an improvement? (I'm genuinely asking this; I know nothing about the politics for Chinese royalty). I think Roshi's assertion that Ah Duo is the one that is blood related to the previous emperor is actually correct. The current emperor was adopted to act as the previous emperor's heir because he didn't have a son until 17 years ago. I also think the current emperor conspired with a bunch of other people, including Maomao's dad, to switch the actual heir to the throne with Ah Duo's baby Jinshi. They claim Maomao's dad didn't notice the switch, but I think he did and just kept his mouth shut. And when the actual heir accidentally died from the honey, Maomao's dad took the fall to protect the current emperor from suspicion because he's a fraud.

My two cents on the swap conversation even though no one asked lol. It’s not impossible for the babies to have looked alike since, by blood, those babies are uncle and nephew (one being born to the previous emperor and one being born to his son the current emperor). When one of my nieces was born, she looked almost exactly like I did as a baby. You could hold her up to my picture as a newborn and think it was a picture of her. So, I think the baby swap going unnoticed isn’t too far fetched.

I may be reading this wrong but i think they are saying MaoMao's 'employment' in the rear palace is related to Fenming because Fenmings family facilitated the kidnapping of MaoMao. It looks like, on paper at least, fenmings family is the faction that oversaw Maomao's entry into the rear palace.

My only question now is if the current emperor knows that Jinshi is his son. Ah-Duo confirmed that they were childhood friends and are still friends, so I don't think she would be afraid to tell him the truth in secret. What is he gonna do? Kill his only son? I really want to see the Interaction between Jinshi and the emperor, and hopefully Ah-Duo.

You misunderstood the comment. They said MaoMao was kidnapped (which we know), the connection to Fengming is that her family are beekeepers and merchants and it turns out they have connections to MaoMao's kidnappers, either directly or via business.

MaoMao in her hypothetical theory says perhaps that is why her father was punished with physical impairment (they removed a bone from his leg), and also perhaps that is why the emperor's brother is in a delicate position. Fengming WASN'T kidnapped tho. She WASN'T brought to the rear palace as a Servant, but as a LADY IN WAITING, who are practically without exception Nobles or at the very least richfag merchants who are practically pseudo nobles essentially. She literally even said that she merely became a Lady-In-Waiting as a form of following her parents (in fact she'd likely be of the rich merchant category since her clan produces honey, a mega luxury good in this region & era, as mentioned by Maomao 1-2 episodes ago. It's also why infant botulism isn't that known, because honey is too valuable to be given to an infant, unless you are rly rly rich merchant or noble w/ the means of doing that, and even then most probably wouldn't do that anyway)

To clear up any confusion, Jinshi is the son of AhDuo and the current emporer, but bc the birth of the current emperor's younger brother (by his father the previous emporer and the empress dowager) took priority, AhDuo switched the babies at some point in order to protect her child. So Jinshi was raised as the younger brother of the current empower, while the real one was passed off as AhDuo's baby and died by FengMing's hands. Hope this helps.

The only explanation that I can think of for them not questioning how the babies looked like was that one baby was the princes, now emperor, brother and the other one was his son, they surely looked close so no one noticed then or as Jinshi grew up, and the babies surely had to have been swapped that night when both births occurred

I think it’s possible that the babies looked similar since one baby was the previous emperor’s baby and the other was his son’s (the current emperor) baby, and the mother’s were different. Not 100% solid but could maybe somewhat explain the mix up
