bakis opinion is everyone is free to make their own choices and dating is a 2 way street thus if kozue no longer wanted him she was free to pick someone else to date as he had no intention to change his plans, at the same time he does care for kozue and their relationship pops up periodically in future baki stuff but itagaki largely makes her a background character after this arc. Kozue later describes this interaction with the broken ali jr as being like his mom looking after him not romantic in any way and obviously his fight with jr involved some gruesome moves like the groin kick and the nearly lethal strangle hold thus her reactions during the fight.

This arc was pointless fr, but honestly I enjoyed it because I found it hilarious. From what I've seen so far in the newer seasons(I'm not fully caught up), Jr hasn't appeared again, but he can have a nice redemption arc if the author chooses to (tbh he doesn't have to reintroduce Jr if he doesn't want to). I honestly like Jr as a character much more after this arc. Idk if jr will ever have that killer instinct, but I can see him becoming a much more capable fighter whose willing to put more on the line to get a victory. He loved winning more than he did fighting, but I think that may have changed after this arc. Everyone got their fair share of Ls in this show.

Alai Jr did deserve to get his ass beat though for messing with Kozue instead of just hassling Baki until he agrees to at least spar against him. The whole point of the arc was to show it's not easy being in this world of fighting and they used someone like Jr who has a lot of potential to show you what you need to survive in it. Jr had to learn the harsh reality of fighting even if you're not at your best and to not make any excuses going into a fight. He was almost complete but the one thing he lacked was the will to risk his life while trying to take a life, with resolve like that he couldn't thrive in their world and Baki proved to be the personification of the perfect underground warrior.
