Gabimaru's wife has to be real, because the girl was saying that the wife being an illusion would be a way to make him stronger and be more useful to the clan, but Gabimaru's wife taught him to be more Human. The clan would definitely not have wanted him to be taught that, they would want him to be a pure killing machine that the Chief controls, but the wife was making Gabimaru be the complete opposite of all of that, which is why Gabimaru wanted to leave the clan with his wife, and so the clan set him up to get arrested and executed.

Other than that their are many things in the show that I would like to see roshi and sheera specifically react too. you guys missed it for a sec but it was said that the use of tao can cause the loss of memory along with other things, i aint read the manga yet so this isnt some spoiler masquerading as a guess but im guessing that the author intentionally had that explanation happen at the same time gabimaru loses his memories so we can question if he lost his memories or if he realized the truth of an illusion.

I think we took what happened the wrong way, I believe we we saw was gabimaru's memory being LOST, meaning that he no longer remembers his wife and his drive for being there, hince why he woke up in such a aggressive manner and why his top half is missing, he's losing himself in a sense

Is it only in his head because isn't Tao in a constant state of movement around the body, starting and ending in the Tanden? He obviously needs time to recover it but I interpreted that visual as a loss in his psyche, a part of his morality or brain function missing (temporarily) as a result of overusing his life force. Fuck knows man lol. This is a wild speculation on my part. Just excited to see what happens next. So tempted to just read the Manga.

I mean, true, you can watch it without knowing most fate universe, I'm not against that, that's why imo it's not that bad if you watch it on your own. But when it comes to reacting, you can expect the flashy fights to be entertaining but for the rest of the story, spend your time reading comments to understand the most of the show, references, etc… (I'm also not taking into account the numerous disagreements that will arise in the comment section among Fate fans regarding the lore, so reading the comments won't help that much either, lol) But again, I'm not fully against it. If they react to it, I'll be here to explain anyway. I just think it's not a good anime for reaction overall.

Honestly yeah, that's fair. I just recommended it cause I figured they only REALLY need to watch fate/zero to understand most of what's going on, and people can just explain the rest. But yeah, there are definitely a lot of references I noticed as well that would be really confusing if they were to watch it.

Nah I'm calling cap. I think his wife is definitely real and all his memories with her are real. Yuzuriha said she was just speculating and her entire speculation was just based on Gabimaru's age. I mean think about it 1) Sagiri said she heard his wife was still alive. At this point why would the chief keep up the lie that his wife isn't real/isn't his wife. It's of no benefit to him. Gabimaru was on death row and the only reason he wasn't killed was because he was resisting dying because of his feelings for his wife. Since Gabimaru was supposed to be this cold person with no feelings why would he need love as a motivation to go on a dangerous mission? He would have just done as he was told. 2) Gabimaru got caught because he was betrayed by the shinobi with him. The chief wasn't there to put him under a genjutsu so why would he think he was betrayed? On the off chance the chief put him under some genjutsu in advance to think he was betrayed what would be the point of that? I mean why would you make one of your best believe that if he got caught it was because his comrades betrayed him? And why would you make him believe that the reason he was betrayed is because he wanted to live a normal life with his wife? That's how you make enemies so it makes no sense. 3) Sagiri mentioned that since the day of his capture his wife had stopped speaking to anyone and then they showed us his wife sitting alone and looking sad. If she wasn't real they easily could have left out the scene where we see her because it isn't something that was necessary to help trick the audience. We still would have believed she's real. 4) It was mentioned that overuse of tao can effect one's memories. Since Gabimaru has zero recollection of what's going on it likely just means he has amnesia especially since Mei saw that the whole of the top of his head was missing. He'd already forgotten everything but instead of having no memories of his wife at all he saw his memories of her slowly fade.

Blind guy explained that using too much tao (life force) can cause memory loss. Gabimaru has lost some memories apparently including the illusion of his wife. His wife was the source of his weakness/ humanity (which strengthened his tao) and now will be a complete heartless bastard (who is ultimately weaker because of that). This is just my interpretation from it. I'm guessing Sagiri will have to now fill that roll in his life I guess? Which is why the intro shows Gabimaru standing with his "wife" who transitions into Sagiri.

Oh, near the end when sagiris group were talking about Tao as they were getting changed, the guy mentioned that using too much of it could be dangerous, and one of the side effects he mentioned was Memory Loss and the camera showed Gabimaru. So maybe his wife is real but maybe he overused his abilities and messed up his memories, since it didn’t show any flow of Tao on the top half of his head.

For those interested in reading along with the original Hell’s Paradise manga, this episode 13 adapted the last page of chapter 40, all of chapters 41-43, nearly all of chapter 44 minus a few pages going into further detail about the Tao power system, and a little more than the first half of chapter 45. This is basically equivalent to 85% of tankōbon volume 5.
