[POV Change]
The sun set, and moonlight began to bathe the castle.
Just as the palace, unsettled by the afternoon’s turmoil, finally settled, Nermedia sat alone in her office.
A knock sounded, prompting her to stand.
“Come in.”
“Did you call for me?”
“Welcome, Kiella. You’re here sooner than I expected.”
“I didn’t have anything pressing, so I came as soon as I heard.”
Kiella replied warmly, since no one else was present.
Rather than showing displeasure, the queen accepted it gracefully, looking at her companion with pity.
“You must have been very disappointed. You thought he was a capable assistant, but he turned out to be worse than a beast—a piece of trash.”
“Ha, that’s true. Seems I don’t have good judgment either. I should have followed the queen’s refusal to let Dayke in.”
“It’s fine. I can just kick him out now.”
At first glance, Nermedia appeared benevolent as she smiled.
“Do you know why I entrusted his interrogation to you, Kiella?”
“Isn’t it because interrogating suspects is the Supreme Court Justice’s job?”
“That’s part of it. But mainly, I remember your skills from a few years ago—the way you extracted military secrets from prisoners of the Demon King’s army during the war.”
Kiella was known within the castle for her fierce nature. Yet, she was not a cold-blooded torturer.
She took on the dirty work others could not, all to protect the kingdom. Still, she nodded without complaint.
“Yes, leave it to me.”
“Dayke has committed an unforgivable sin and dares to claim innocence. We can no longer allow such scum in the castle.”
Nermedia clenched her fists, pretending real anger. But she didn’t reveal to Kiella, her closest confidant, that it was all a ruse.
She wanted to keep her harsh side hidden from others.
Kiella would believe that Dayke truly assaulted the maid and wouldn’t stop until he confessed.
‘He’ll have no choice but to make a false confession to survive.’
Once the confession reached the princess and Dayke was expelled, everything would be resolved.
Iril might be shocked, but it was a small price to pay without earning her hatred.
“By the way, don’t kill him during interrogation. You must let her hear Dayke’s confession firsthand.”
“…Understood.”
“Then can you start immediately? Use any means necessary to get the confession.”
“Yes. I won’t disappoint you.”
I sat tied to a chair in the castle basement’s interrogation room.
Dim light from a small electric lamp barely revealed the cruel instruments of torture scattered around.
True to its name, this was where Kiella had interrogated prisoners during the war against the Demon King. Back then, it had been a nightmare for the prisoners—and now, for me.
This was where Kiella had in my past life.
‘Still, I feel more at ease than I expected. Maybe it’s because the roles have completely reversed?’
Crunch….!!
“Uh, are you there?”
“Yes. I just met the queen and am on my way back.”
“Really? What did she say?”
Kiella responded as she untied the ropes from my hands.
“She needs you to confess to the princess. I’m going to force you into a false confession.”
It was so predictable that I felt no tension at all. The queen’s simple, obvious plan made me laugh quietly.
“What are you planning to do now?”
Enjoy!!
