Ep 111 - Hundred Years War 1:

hello patrons, this is your ad-free version of episode 111, hope you enjoy!

this week's question comes from Dr Goatherd

in this episode, Luke and Eleanor finally begin a series on the Hundred Years War between France and England but before we can get into the war itself, there's a lot to be introduced. we breakdown the numerous, long-standing issues that led to war such as: multiple French dynastic crises, the overlapping nature of Medieval land holdings, the compounding crisis of the 14th century, the confusing claims that the English had to the French throne, and much more Game of Thrones-esque nonsense. enjoy!

attachments:

1: an image of the puny, overrated Plymouth Rock

2. a map of the Angevin Empire (English holdings in France) in the 200 years leading up to the HYW

3. a map of English holdings on the even of war in 1328

Luke- have you ever seen the Liberty Bell? I grew up not far from Philly and saw it on a field trip as a kid, and felt similar to how you felt about Plymouth Rock. It looks so much bigger in the photos! Though, looking at that photo of Plymouth Rock, it is even more lame than the Liberty Bell was. As a history teacher, I would like to apologize for the historic letdown. To you, to me, to everyone. Go visit the Grand Canyon someday, if you haven't already. That's the one national treasure type thing I've seen that lives up to the hype.
