Got ro rake issue with one point. Mujahideen did not become the Taliban. The Mujahideen fought a civil war after Soviet withdrawal and then the Taliban (backed by Pakistan) arose. Military leadership during the civil war (and after, kinda) was analogous in many ways to late medieval and early Renaissance (sorry Eleanor!) Europe with armies arranged around their leader rather than any geographical marker. The US didn't so much invade Afghanistan so much as intervene in a civil war by picking a side. The Taliban takeover recently was less an insurgency against an occupation and more the Taliban saying "our foreign backers are sticking with us, your's aren't". Rant over! Had to say something because my driver in Kabul was an ex-Mujahid who had fought the Soviets. He would be mortally offended by being compared to a Talib!
