Even though this anime can be horribly sad at times, it has been a real joy watching you guys latch on to this story as much as I hoped you would. So many authors love to do the whole βwar is badβ narrative, and of course that narrative will work until the end of time, but 86 for me is just a cut above the rest, and episodes like this really prove that.

2024-01-30 08:54:15 +0000 UTCSoldiers are incredibly superstitious, the slightest bit of perceived luck, good or bad, can drastically effect the morale of a unit. The 86, who had a chance to not fight, and instead returned to the battlefield are already seen as loose cannons. On top of that, the units they're attached to have a high attrition rate, lending an air that they don't care about who they're fighting with, as long as they get to destroy the Legion. While it might be seen as a positive to have such strong fighters in your unit, if they have a reputation of being sole survivors or always fighting alone regardless of everyone else, it will engender a strong bit of superstition about them. Sure, Shin will make sure you don't turn into Legion parts, but it'd sure be a lot better if he saved you instead. Despite no longer being discriminated because of San Magnolia's trash policies, now they're being ostracized purely on their ruthless performance on the battlefield.

2024-01-30 02:57:57 +0000 UTCAbout the hate the 86 are getting in Giad. I read somewhere that the anime doesn't really explain this well in comparison to the Light Novel. Apparently the way they fight against the Legion is different to Giad. They have been fighting like they were fodder all their lives and when it comes to Shin & company, they have done so for years. They know better then to go out of their way to save as many lives as possible and becoming easy target for the Legion. Something we can experience for ourselves during the first half when Daiya tries to help out one of their comrade and paid for it. So they got this "bad" reputation in Giad's army. I felt this explanation to be compelling when you take into account all the information delivered in this episode. During the cafeteria scene it is said that "All his superior officers died", which support the idea that they don't prioritize trying to save everyone. Also after he shot Eugene, he was asked why he didn't go and save him. This could be either during the battle itself or the delusion of a recruit that thought Eugene could be saved before he got shot and put to rest. Either way, the 86 are different then the soldier of Giad and are discriminated against. This time around the discrimination is based of something completely different then race. Still no where near as bad as it was in the Republic though, as we can see a lot of people still defend them.
