Of course he was using zetsu while infiltrating, to not get detected, which would leave him vulnerable to the extremely strong nen aura of the royal guards. Thank you for giving this context <3 That has really cleared up what I thought was an inconsistency.

However, a note worthy thing to say about Knov is that he got to experience the Aura of the Royal Guards in a state of little to no protection against Nen. Just like how Zetsu would conceal your presence from the lack of emitting aura, it also remove all your protection against aura. One of the very first thing we learn about Aura is how no protection against Nen is extremely dangerous and taxing, such has when they learned Nen and were trying to simply walk through Hisoka's Nen at Heaven's Arena. So it's highly possible that he was in a very vulnerable state when he felt the aura which most likely made him feel the terror that much more. Explaining, somewhat, his current state.
