I prefer dub in all instances, but Ill watch sub because I enjoy these guys reaction. Sub sounds cool sometimes but its just nice hearing it in a language you understand. Plus it is near impossible to multi-task while watching a subbed anime. In english you can atleast imagine things if your not fully watching but subbed and while multi-tasking its just unintelligible noise. I find people give dubbed a really hard time but 95% of the time dubbed is great voice acting you can actually tell the nuance in the voices. Not the same for subbed you can really only tell tone of their voice if your a non Japanese speaker.

I think this is the crux of why I prefer subs. It's jarring to watch and hear what is supposed to be Japanese people speak English. It's creates this weird cultural/linguistic clash in my brain that I can't work through. Especially when Japanese cultural references, conventions, phrases and more are involved. Good examples are Yuu Yuu Hakusho & Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. For YYH, while most people prefer the dub (it's iconic honestly, I grew up with it, I own dvds even lol), I've found the sub to be much more interesting to watch. Yusuke really does feel and sound like a typical Japanese middle school boy, as he should, as opposed to an American badboy with a smart mouth. But on the other hand, FMAB is enjoyable in dub. The story, characters, etc., are arbitrarily European so it doesn't clash with the English. Furthermore, the voice acting is superb. Have I watched it in Japanese? Yes, and it's good but it clashed way too much for me.

It was mentioned in this episode, that Shinigami (death gods) can't be killed. So if Light wrote Ryuk's name in the Death Note, nothing would happen to Ryuk. If he wrote another Shinigami's name as well, nothing would happen to them. I believe this is because technically they're already dead in a way, or because they are a god and transcend life and death. As a Death God, they are given the ability to kill mortals tho.

I'm glad you guys watched it in Japanese! The reason why Light wrote the r*pe guy name in the beginning multiple times because of the spelling. He wrote different spellings because he only knew that guy's name just by that guy telling to the girl. Just like in English, even if you know someone's name by how it sounds doesn't mean you know the spelling. It's even harder in Japanese because they use kanji (Chinese character). For example, the kanji for Megumi could be "恵", "恵美", or "愛実", these are pretty common one but then there are uncommon spelling like "芽実" , "恵実" and so on, and nowadays parents like to use kirakira names (flashy names) which is more uncommon, the kanji and the way of reading it are totally different. Just like Light in this show, his kanji is "月" (meaning: moon, how to read: Tsuki/Getsu) but as for his name it should be read as Raito (Light) which doesn't make sense in terms of how to read it but the meaning is make sense because moon has light or people often says moonlight. If death note exists in 2023 I'm pretty sure it would be hard for Light to use it because of all the kirakira names, nowadays there are people named Cocoa, Doremi, Harua, etc and there's no way he could guess their kanji even if he tries multiple times 😂 There was even a news about kirakira names, I remember parents naming their child as "Pooh" and the kanji was "黄熊" (yellow bear) lol. How did Light knows about Shinigami? Well it's just a common thing, if there's something like Death Note it would be some spiritual things going on. Light has been using it and saw the result of his act, so he was ready to anything spiritual would happen to him. Shinigami is a grim reaper, so it just makes sense to Light when it showed up. Death note and grim reaper just connected the dot for him.

I don’t think good dubs are that rare tbh. I just think people have a bias or preference, and so they naturally lean towards what they’re more used to. Granted there are some really bad dubs out there too. But the whole “dub is always bad” narrative is dead.

Respectfully, I think the sub is better than the dub. The entire show is set in Japan, consisting of a cast with mostly Japanese names, with Japanese cultural references. I really cringe on the dub absolutely butchering Japanese names and references. I also like the Japanese VA's more, but the dub VA's are pretty good too.

Aiden, I can answer that for you. When people react or watch to a Japanese anime it'll have English subtitles, and for non-native English speakers it's easier to understand by reading than listening :) We have a hard time trying to understand what they're saying just by listening, but reading is more easier, it's the first thing we learn about another language. I hope you understand now. :)

I've noticed that you guys are very fixated on the idea of categorizing characters as "bad" or "good", which I totally understand because all of these are just shows but there are a lot of unique ones that doesn't simply separate the goods and bads. What I rlly like about these type of anime is that it shows how much we can relate to them; they feel more alive cuz if we take it into our perspectives, people around us are both good and bad, even us. Just like that one scene at the convenience store with Light, if you had the ability to "erase" all those who sexually assaults others, you'd think about it, right? Victims definitely don't deserve it but when you hear stuff in the news about a criminal given a lighter sentence, you'd think "that should've been a death sentence", then wouldn't that make you a bad person for wishing for someone's death? You've already watched AOT so it should be easier to understand to know how important it is to consider the characters' intentions and motives rather than knowing if they're good or bad.

To answer your question, Death Note is a shounen manga, it was published in Weekly Shounen Jump! Also, shounen (young boys/teen boys), seinen (men), shoujo (young girls/teen girls), and jousei (women) are demographics, not genres or categories. Basically, it's who the manga/anime is being made for or sold to. The genre however for Death Note is just as Michelle said. Psychological, thriller, etc. Nah, the disrespect to Miyano Mamoru is crazy. Ain't no way. 💀 I respect ya'lls opinions and the work put in, but ain't no way anybody outdoing Mamoru.

The live action movie is nothing compared to the anime! Actually, the movie is total trash, especially if you know the anime and the manga! And I wouldn't recommend you to watch the movie again, because it's not close to the original story. You definitely have to be prepared to pay very close attention! Death Note is just as complex as AOT. That's why it's not so easy to say, "Yes, he's good and he's bad!". In Death Note, the different understandings of justice are presented very well and are basically the main theme of the entire story

I agree with Ivan this might be the only anime I think is best Dub and the argument of the creators I’d just like to say they hire the VA and do the animation usually the Author of the Manga has no say in these things. He’s obviously fond of English I mean Death Note is literally spelled in English. I respect the animators and the VA of both as I’ve watched this show in both but for someone who doesn’t speak Japanese it is all just a translation. Japanese is a language, at least for people who speak English is not exactly word for word perfect. I believe This is the only anime that is better Dubbed. I feel like DN can be perceived as Grey blurred between bad or good. Idk about you guys but if I could press a button for every truly evil person to “disappear” I would. So would you not press it? But that also has a blurred mindset because some people might truly regret their crimes but another person might not consider a crime/act to be “bad” say people with substance abuse for example if they didn’t hurt anyone but themselves I consider that a victim but another person might feel like it’s evil. In my personal belief, if a human has done something that in my morale is irredeemably evil say people who have abused kids for one example. I ask would that make me a “bad person” to make sure that people like that are gone from the world? Just some thoughts no spoilers. As the saying goes “A necessary evil”.
