I always assumed american football got called football because it was based on australian footy or australian rules football (also called Aussie Rules) and socceer in which you do kick the ball. Since it was adapted from sports that were called football its still referred to by the same name even those the sport has evolved differently here. America football is nfl, Australia football is AFL, and Europe Football is football but Britain who started it taking football from medieval sport and altered rules and then soccer that was derived term from football association was actually created by Britain and was used overseas so there is nothing wrong with calling it soccer as the word still originated from Britain as well so they only have them selves to blame when other countries especially America refer to it as soccer .

Japanese people call it サッカー (Sakka) or in the episode Ego Jinpachi actually referred it as フットボール (Futtobooru) once. Either way it doesn't really matter and those that get offended by either or are just really butt hurt.

In Japanese, football is called soccer (サッカー）. Both terms, first soccer and then football originated in the UK so both are correct. The first Japanese football team was at the end of the 19th century when the plays in the UK would be called soccer (assocer=association football). That is why the sport is called soccer in Japan too. However, football is used officially in professional competitions and its Federation. It is better to use football in Europe or South America but since you are USA reactors, soccer is acceptable.
