One of the first few times I watched Shippudden through I watched it with a Japanese friend of mine and she pointed out many times where the translation for the sub was just wrong. As I speak Korean fluently there are many times when watching a drama or movie that the translation is just wrong, I can see how they try to capture the essence and nuance of some of the words/meaning but in some cases it’s just plain incorrect. That’s what I’m referencing

Usually the sub is closer to a literal translation while the dub takes more liberties. To understand the job of a translator you need to know that a translator takes one language and makes it make sense in another language. So dubs not being a direct translation can often be translated however the translator thinks it needs to be translated to best fit that material not necessarily being a direct translation. But usually, the meaning remains the same with little changes in nuance as a byproduct. This episode being one such case: Gaara sub: "People can't defeat their loneliness" Gaara dub: "Perhaps even the companionship of an evil person is preferable to lonelineess." The sub is almost an exact literal translation of the Japanese: "Hito wa kodoku ni katenai" (People can't win against loneliness) The dub can be argued to be a more artistic and subjective take on the sub. Translation is an art. Neither is per say wrong. It's a preference.

It was adapted in episode 119 and 120 of Shippuden, but it was created between Naruto Classic and Shippuden in the manga. It will give you guys lot of context regarding Kakashi’s behaviors and mannerisms seen in Naruto Classic, his past, why he is the way he is and more information of Naruto’s lore.

Not that they can't still switch, but I don't think they will sadly. Especially since they're already used to the sub voices. But Idk, the speeches and passion just hit different in the dub.

Same for Kimimaro except "Perhaps even the companionship of an evil person is preferrable to loneliness..." Kimimaro was just found by the wrong people... Actually Gaara said as much that Naruto (or people like Naruto) is the same as Kimimaro: fighting for someone they revere.

The other is DBZ/DBS because the fighting noises are unbearable lol. There's two animes that I feel like are equally good in subbed and dubbed which are HxH and Akame Ga Kil. The rest of the animes are better in subbed. Just my opinion

In the end what Gaara really said was "perhaps the companionship of even an evil person is preferable than loneliness" that line made me feel even more bad for Kimimaru. He literally body ravaged with disease, incapable of physically moving, mentally willed his body to move, faced prominent ninja like Gaara and still almost won, all this knowing he was to deliver a replacement for the job he originally wanted. If that's not selfish, I don't know what is. If Kimimaro was written as a good guy or one of the main cast that story would have everyone in tears. I could gush over Kimimaro all day. He, I feel, doesn't get the credit he deserves. He essentially was a secret boss with how powerful he was and his appearance as the pen ultimate villain of the Naruto part one series. Knew him for so little yet he had such an impact. He was not a one off in my book.

Sasuke is the exception where he obviously has agreed to seek him out to help him with his revenge. As you are in Shippuden already, you will probably know a bit more, depending on how far you are. Kimimaro meeting with Haku and the line "he has the same eyes as me", what it means, I feel strikes at the core meaning of Naruto. Kimimaro, I felt embodied this. Haku too. The other great line in this episode by Gaara the philosopher - "Even the companionship of an evil person is preferable to loneliness." That line hit me like a nuke. Humans are social beings. I was able to unlock the empathy in me I never knew I had after realizing all this. I don't hate Kimimaro, I hate Orochimaru for his twisted reasons took advantage of multiple people like Kimimaro. Kimimaro was a legend and had potential to change a lot had it not been for his disease and upbringing

How sad is that. He was used all the way until the end and they made it clear he needs to be useful.

He is one of the strongest characters in this verse orochimaru literally says it was thanks to him that they were able to kill a KAGE. I wish he had more screen time. Especially with such a unique kekkei genkai. :,(
