Was this the beginning of the end for Elan? If no one ever came then I assume the kid eventually died… it’s hard to hide a dead body without an investigation of some sort, even if you say the kid ran away.

I've always wondered why Joe kept himself anonymous. This strip really explains it--as part of Joe's experience he had to abuse a lot of people--and he feared their reprisal. Makes me wonder exactly how far he made it in the system.

Last year, I lost one of my closest friends to suicide - a friend I had known since first grade. Devastating doesn't even begin to describe what it was like - especially since I had never even considered that he was in so much pain to have done such a thing.
You said you cried while writing this chapter. And I cried while reading this chapter. I cannot even imagine what hell that boy went through to even consider doing such a thing - much less attempting it with that much resolve.
And it was all deliberately brought on him. Evil does not even begin to describe the likes of Joe Ricci and those behind Elan. The word does not exist to properly describe the level of utter consciousless, sadistic depravity that he represented. He is truly one of the most evil people I've ever studied.
