The Fox Files: Parker Lewis Can’t Lose

“Pilot” (September 2, 1990)

Is Parker Lewis Can’t Lose somehow the best show we’re profiling in this miniseries? Maybe! It’s especially remarkable that a show trying to seem hip and of-the-moment to young people can look good 35 years later, but this show really does it though a combination of surreal humor, inventive camera angles and the guts to make a sitcom that didn’t look like anything that aired on network TV before.

My strongest memory of Parker Lewis is the episode where Harry Anderson from night court guest starred as his dad‘s best friend from high school who came back as some baseball star. There was a crowd greeting Harrys character and one of them had a poster that said thanks for not watching Eerie, Indiana. 😜

Also, I would argue another example of the Sawyer/Huck phenomenon of a follow-up being for a more mature audience could be the Hobbit/Lord of the Rings. My Dad read the Hobbit to me and I loved every chapter, he then followed on with LOTR and I couldn’t follow it for the life of me. We’ve heard enough about Fliz Flaz and Him Ham, get to the bloody point!

I think the Malcolm in the Middle scene shot from inside the fridge you’re thinking of is a cold open where Lois puts a grapefruit inside to encourage healthier snacking, we see the boys consistently avoid it until it decomposes and Hal mistakes it for a brownie.

oooh, Night of the Comet link!

So in the Ferris Bueller series, the film was based on TV Ferris, but TV Sloane is a transfer student that Ferris doesn't know yet?

Erin Hardy

Strong disagree on the relative hotness of Parker and Michael. I thought Corin Nemec was so hot back in the day.

Seth Reeves

You doing this and Dobie Gillis back to back is so fitting as they’re effectively the same show (and two of my favorites, save the final season of Parker Lewis). Also Ferris Bueller was a rip off of Dobie Gillis the inspiration for all of those shows.
