Just thought of this. If the 76mm gun and the 3” gun were so similar ballistically. What made the 3” guns HE more viable than the 76mm’s HE?

I remember seeing the video by military history visualized why the MG 42 could not go into tanks because of how it had to swap the barrels out through the side and World War II tanks couldn’t have an MG 42 as their machine gun and that’s why the MG 34 stayed. What was learned where they were able to add the MG 3, which is very similar to the MG 42. How could that be mounted in Leopard 1’s and 2’s. Do they still have to change the barrels and if so how? Or is it a thicker barrel where it’s not a concern

i happened to rewatch the snapshot of M3A1 with it's cast hull and noticed the hull form is similar to that of Ram, do you believe there to be a connection between the two, or would it have simply been a product of what was around at the time?

With the advent of jets at the end of WW2 and the development of the AN/M3 Calibre .50 to put more rounds on target given their speeds, was there ever an attempt to mount these faster firing weapons on Shermans or Pershings post war or during Korea? Similarly, while loading up my venerable copy of Armored Fist 3 the other day, I clocked in the intro an M1 with what appeared to be a GAU-19 for the Commander. Is there any evidence of this being trialed? It seems absurd to mount a weapon that will eat through the whole .50 ammunition reserve in less than a minute!

What is a “unity sight” and how does it differ from a normal periscope?

Since 80 years ago the worlds biggest conflict finally found an end: what was the state of the us armor branch in january 45? What had they planned, what lessons learned? What was the state of tank design? What improvements were needed and what worked?

Could the Germans have done a better job of supplying their allies with more capable and up to date Tanks?

My apologies ahead of time but I'm new to Patreon and don't know of the common etiquette in place here. For more than a couple of reasons, I'd like to pose a question to The Chieftain. Primarily because he's the only public figure I'm aware of that has had close physical access to Jacques Littlefield's restored Panther Ausf. A. I'm curious about the history of this particular vehicle prior to its recovery from the River Czarna Nida in Poland in November of 1990. I've read that it was possibly part of the 16th Panzer Division and the Panther in question apparently attempted to cross a frozen river during a retreat from the Soviet's Baranowsko-Sandomierski bridgehead. However, not fluent in either Polish or German I'm having difficulty finding any conclusive answers. Is there any additional information you can add to the vehicle's history?

What is the misfire drill for tanks with two piece ammunition like Soviet T-series and Chieftain/Challenger.

Con_of_Class

Is there any good single source covering the various “t-series” experimental vehicles of the USA during the WW2 period? What would you recommend for a list/description of each vehicle?

whyme943

if you can answer, does the Army have a preference for 12, 24, 36, or higher voltage battery systems

With the M8 grey hound first made to be a TD but then was put into a scout car role. How would the M24 Chaffee performed doing the role of the M3 75mm GMC. Are there any vehicles that would perform sufficiently in another existing vehicle’s role. Like the 3” on the M10 doing artillery comparable to the 105mm on the M7

Hi Chieftain, loved the 11th ACR Videos, really loved the command and control that goes into an excercise like that. I have 2 questions again. 1. How useful was the Centaur OP (The one with the dummy barrel and extra radios) tank during the war? Did the Americans experiment with a similar concept? Aside from the M3 Scout Car 2. What was the role of the M20 LAC? It's said it could carry 6 soldiers into battle, and was equipped with a Bazooka and mines? Is its purpose different than the M8 LAC?

I am probably all too late to the party, but I have couple of quick ones. With the cancellation of the ERCA and the switch to the SPH-M do you feel that it is perhaps better if the US Army purchases some off-the-shelf systems to fill any capablity gap, preceived or not, until they can find a true replacement for the M109 or do you think that the system is good enough to last for now? Second question, Have you read Proud Legions and if so what did you think of it from a story and 'realism' point of view?

I’ve seen diagrams of the arrow head like thrust used by the Germans at Kursk with tigers at the tip, panthers flanking, and panzers in the middle. Wouldn’t it make more sense if tigers at the flanks since they had stronger side armor and panthers have more effective frontal armor. And if I remember correctly, Ferdinand’s were used in the Northern armor. Tiger were in Center and South and the Panther was mostly in the South. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

If the Hetzer, JgPZIV, and other tank destroyers with front mounted guns were very front heavy and needed redesigned front road wheels, why not have rear mounted guns like the Ferdinand or the Nashorn to counterbalance the weight? What about central mounted like jagdtiger’s. What are the benefits and the reason why front, central, and rear mounted guns on German TDs. And any videos you recommend on the JgdPz I, I wish to learn more about it

From what I’ve seen. In July of 1944 the M4A1 fought in the hedgerows of Normandy with the 76mm. But I’ve seen that also M4A3 VVSS also saw combat in July with the 76. Yet I contradicted information that they didn’t. When and which did Sherman’s get the 76 with the VVSS tracks to bolster up allied AT abilities to push across France

Little Z

That’s a good take. Also I wonder which tank was most preferred for the tankers or supporting infantry. Which vehicle vehicle had a moral boost for infantry and tankers due to how imposing it looks/combat records (I mention because of Sheridan’s record), effective lethally (being reliable in means of knowing it will get to the fight and blow up targets) and best survivability/crew comfort for the time

What technology/technologies would enable a shift from primarily direct fire anti-tank weapons to primarily indirect fire anti-tank weapons? Is the level of technology/operator proficiency currently deployed in Ukraine sufficient to draw conclusions?

Adam Schindler

Hope I’m not too late! Been distracted with prepping for final exams this week. 1) We all know what The Chieftan does when various tanks are on fire, with some tanks being more crew-friendly than others. However, what about when the weather gets cold? Can we get “The Chieftan’s Top 5 Engine Decks to Sleep On”? 2) I recently rewatched your video “Preparing The US Army for WW2”. As I’m majoring in manufacturing engineering, I was especially interested in the creation of the Army Industrial College and how Army Ordnance handled procurement and production from private companies. Any particular sources you could recommend regarding manufacturing (from any nation) during WWII? I think you recommend the US Army Green Books in that video, which I’ll definitely be looking into.

Do you have a favorite MRE? Or most hated?

I've had the pleasure of visiting Ireland twice now, yet never found almond fingers. Where do you get them?

You've give statistics on how many us armor crewmen were killed in ww ii. Do those numbers include any losses in DD Sherman's swimming to the beaches on D-day?

Question: when the Navy scraps a warship like the Ticonderoga cruisers, they sell them to a scrapyard at bargain basement prices who turns the warship into razor blades or guarding posts. What happens to the Abrams and Bradley's that are in outside storage and will probably never be used again. After cannibalization, target range careers etc., are the parts melted down or recycled into something else such as gardening rakes or stop signs?

Mike Quinton

I say; It’s time for Elbonia ‘93 The Cold War is over, and in its wake, Elbonia has emerged. You have been put in charge to acquire armored vehicles for the new country. However, you are a traitor with allegiances to another nation! Same rules apply as last time, however some of the vehicle types have changed. The Medium and Heavy tank have been replaced by the MBT, the APC remains but the light tank gets split into a recon vehicle and an IFV, SPAA can either be a SAM Vehicle or purely gun based like a ZSU-23-4 or a Gepard, the SPG remains and lastly the tank destroyer is replaced with an Anti-Tank Missile Carrier.

Assuming the country is not getting bombed, how long does it take to tool up and start producing tank/artillery ammunition and spare parts for vehicles?

A Cara, congratulations again on your new command. My question is, when shunting trains, there are specific rule book signals (hand by day, lamp by night) the person in charge of the movement makes to the driver to direct them to move forward, reverse, slow down, stop etc. Are there similar “rule book” signals for directing tanks / AFV’s that both driver and person on the ground have to know and follow? I’d imagine that being hit by a tank is as significant an emotional event as being hit by a train. Thanks 🙏🏼

Hi Chieftain. I might have an interesting brain tickler for you. Considering that the Israelis upgraded the sherman to be able to fight early to mid cold war tanks. Would it be possible follow a similar to upgrade path to get the panzer IV to a similar level? And a second question would be this: What may have been one of the first battles that showed the anti-tank potential of the panzer IV? Be it before or after the fitting of the long 75.

With weapons/vehicle programs frequently being cancelled whenever there’s a new war/conflict, POTUS, SECDEF, or Army Chief of Staff (think M8 Buford) what are the odds of the M10 Booker actually entering BATTALION service? Now that we’re in FY2025 what’s the current status of the program?

John Cryer

Hey Chieftan! I hope you had an awesome Turkey Day! First question, what is your plate looking like at the Thanksgiving dinner table? Are there any special foods you look forward to? Second question. At just about the end of WW2, the M2 Browning MG was phased out of aircraft use with the new AN/M3, featuring a new staggering fire rate of 1250/rounds per minute. Was there any thought/attempt to mount this new MG on a ground based system such as a tank and/or APC? The M3s, for example, could have been mounted onto the M16 MGMC for higher anti-air/ground support effectiveness, but I am unaware if this was ever attempted. Or would this have been deemed something to the lines of "too excessive"? In the sense of ammunition and logistics, is that why we still only see it on aircraft?

What do you see now and in the near future as the most effective defense against drones for armored vehicles? This could be tactics (i.e., more use of smoke), old school AA weapons like quad 50s, or some electronic devices coming to market soon. My apologies if you may have covered this topic in other places. Thanks!

John Rehberger

1) At what level of formation would an ACR be attached as the reconnaissance screen? I’ve seen conflicting information stating the screen for an armoured division would be either an entire ACR or a cavalry squadron. I would appreciate an expert putting this to bed. 2) new armoured vehicles in development by several western (or western leaning) militaries seem to be indicating an increase in both tank main gun (120mm to 130mm or even 140mm) and IFV autocannons (25/30mm to 40mm or even 50mm). Do you feel there is a need for these firepower upgrades given the defensive properties of modern armour, and the tactics and capabilities of the militaries looking at these larger weapons? 3) in a futuristic science fiction/science fantasy world, assuming no impact on the other aspects of the firepower/protection/mobility triad, would you rather have your armoured brigade/ACR equipped with tanks and IFV’s with some form of ground effect motive system (anti-grav, hover tech whatever) or stick to the tried and true tracks? And at the same time, would you condone, or even want, your tanks to be equipped with missiles (either AT or AA)? Assume the missiles do not pose a risk to the survivability of the tank. 4) Perun’s recent coverage of KADEX showed some concept next gen tanks with drones and other systems built in. Would these be worthwhile additions in your opinion, or extraneous usages of weight/space?

What is your take on the Boxer RCH 155 Howitzer?

Aside from a certain pit fruit beginning with A, what other superstitions are there among tank crews? What did/do tank crews get up to when they’re bored?

Caleb Engelhardt

Perhaps more of a plane question than a tank question: It's often said that the worst enemy of German armor on the Western Front during WWII was a P-47 or Typhoon carrying a few HVARs or RP-3s. This sentiment seems like one of those things that has pretty thoroughly permeated the popular understanding of how the Western Allies combatted heavier German armor. Obviously bombers of all sorts would undoubtedly wreak havoc among tactical and strategic targets to cripple the Germans' ability to support armored formations. However, I've seen conflicting information on how effective rocket and bomb attacks against individual tanks or columns of tanks were in actually destroying armored targets, with some stating that poor accuracy of these sorts of weapons meant that actual kills on tanks in these attacks might be more down to luck than anything else. Could you shed some light on this? Were attacks from fighter-bombers actually an effective and reliable means of knocking out tanks, or was their impact really more in their ability to cripple the logistical formations and centers keeping those tanks in the fight, while attacks on tanks served mostly just to delay movement or panic crews. Also, a few years ago a friend bought me a telescopic sight, ostensibly from a tank. The inscription on the scope reads "Telescope M70-H", and is dated 1944. It appears that the M70 was made for various armored vehicles in several models. However, I cannot find any information on the H model of this sight; only the M70-F, G, and P for the M4, M10, and M36 respectively. Is there any information you could give me on the H model? Lastly, not a question, but a small follow-up just because I thought it was really cool to see as a big fan of WWII era American TDs: In your last Q&A you answered a question of mine regarding large-caliber HESH rounds. In it, you showed the results of a test on what was allegedly an M36 that resulted in some pretty catastrophic damage. I just wanted to point out (not as a "WeLl AkShUaLlY" but just because I think it's really neat) that the vehicle in the photo appears to be a 76mm Gun Motor Carriage T72. You'd know far better than me how rare (or not) images of the vehicle might be, but it certainly wasn't something I would expect to see getting 155mm HESH lobbed at. Although it would help explain why none are around today. In any case, just something I wanted to share.

The Vietnam War was also known as the first helicopter war. With the most famous of which being the Huey. But there was a significant Armor presence with South Vietnamese/American forces. I’ve heard mixed reports and stories of Tank units being absolutely decimated while others were perfectly fine and laughed at the enemy without Anti-Tank weaponry Is there truth to either side of this? And what could a US tank crewman expect getting sent to Vietnam? In short, What is the story of the Vietnam War US Tank Crewman?
