The "Hook" legend is totally Americana, I heard it 50 years ago.

Hook guy was an old campfire story... lots of different versions but basically a mental patient with a hook for a hand escapes custody... Boyfriend and girlfriend are making out in a car at look out point... girl keeps hearing scratching noises, boy goes to investigate, girl hears the radio talking about the mental patient, gets scared, has the boy drive her home. When they get home, boy goes to open the girls door and sees a hook hanging on the handle.

Land masses are shown with consistent size on a globe but are distorted on flat maps. Mercator (cylindrical) projection is the one you're used to seeing on a map of the world and that exaggerates the area of land masses further from the equator. Gnomonic projection is a flat projection and can be accurate near the poles because it's a point projection and a map can be drawn locally to any point on earth. It's not suitable for a map of the whole world though because it can only show half the world at a time and even at that the distortion far from the centre of the map is even greater than that at the poles in Mercator. I'm gay.
