We’ve covered ideas about high rates in the past here, I-bonds are an example of this.
What has become a new obsession of mine for the last year have been high rate short term CDs for cash on hand.
Excellent points on Slack about using new card 0% offers for this, but I’m more interested in capturing the normal float that comes with this game.
Churning in and out of cards with Fluz could mean 10-50-100% of that is sitting around doing nothing, just waiting to pay off your credit card.
This might mean letting cards close with a balance.
My plays have been: Opening high yield promotional CDs 5.3-6% range are not uncommon. CD marketplace on Schwab/Fidelity has good rates for 1-3months (5.4% or so for 1-3-6 months).
Current rate sheet (6/30/24:
$10,000 for 5.3% for 6 months is $265 (taxes will lessen this). Take an inventory of how much cash you have moving around and consider how to capture interest on it.
Alternative options: High yield accounts that you can have your float sit in are paying 4.5-5% as well. This is nice because it is very passive. This would also let you pay off the cards before the statement hits at a loss of interest though.
Another option: TBills earning 5.3%+ for 3-6 months, maybe less of a tax hit. (minimum transaction size concerns).
