There are many kinds of magic in the world; there is the magic of the gods, the natural magic of the world, the chaotic magic of the fae, and the precise magic of arcane law. There is then the magic that is drawn from simple skill. Bards and artisans (such as smiths) can tap into this magic naturally, but often unconsciously. Their skill draws about effects that could not be explained as something normal. Frequently those in the know can even prove and measure the magical nature of these items. Skill is a source of magic in this way, and it infuses objects and people.

Those who master a skill, who do so utterly and completely, can become a master. A master has not only complete comprehension over a skill, but have come to embody it to the point that it replaces their mortality. They will live for as long as their skill is practiced somewhere in the world without surpassing their own. When a master's skill is surpassed, they will begin to fade, withering as their mantel of skill ebbs from their body and to that of their successor. This process is inevitable. Rather than fight it, masters often take on students, preferring to groom others to take their place one day. Somewhere out there waits a bright pupil worthy of their mantel.
