Hello friends, and happy March!
I am in the process of putting together the 'zine for this month, a mockup of which you can see above. Why Did They Come? will be a 20 page, full color, cartoon essay, updating a cartoon essay that previously ran at The Nib. Physically it will be very similar to the Life During Interesting Times 'zine from all the way back in November 2022. A firmer card stock with the comics inside completely formatted for print. I am very happy with how it's coming out, and think it's going to make a fine addition to my growing collection of self-published comics. More to come on this in the next week or two.
For now, I wanted to also share a couple of placeholder images laying out my plans for April and May.
Death on a Farm relates to my new middle-grade graphic novel, The Hidden Dominion of Geordie James. This will be a cartoon essay that articulates many of the themes I am exploring in my new book, the food supply, animal rights, and the idea that humans exert so much control over the world around us, building it to suit our needs, and feeling like we can exist apart from nature, which... I don't think is a true thing at all. This will be me further exploring some of these ideas as I work myself up to creating a similar essay that can fit more comfortably as a backup feature in a book intended for 8-12 year olds.
Following that, my current thoughts for the 'zine after that are:
Some kind of Disney themed 'zine, focused on Disney IP (Star Wars, the MCU, more...) as well as further thoughts on Disney the business. When I was an up-and-coming cartoonist, late 90's/early 'aughts, Disney was essentially shorthand for soulless corporate art, although somewhere along the way this seemed to change. I want to make some comics focused on this.
The March and April 'zines are locked in, the May one is subject to change, I might come up with a different idea and come back to this one later, but for now, these are the plans for the next few months.
As always, print subscribers can expect to receive 'zines toward the tail-end of every month, digital subscribers will receive the link to download the PDF once all physical copies have gone into the mail. If at any point you switch your membership level to an annual subscription, I will mail you a bonus pack of 'zines pulled from my backlist as a thankyou (plus you save 10%!). If you're liking being a part of this club, it's a great thing to consider.
Thanks as always for the support!
Mike
