This information has already been given and it's even in this episodes mid ep info break. That place you think is the afterlife, I suppose, is actually the coordinate. It's why throughout the series, Reiner and his Marley friends called Eren "the coordinate", because that's basically the founding titan's power. I'm sure once you rewatch the entire series it'll come back to you and many things will clear up, because I know I was confused myself until I rewatched the series, and once you know what kind of information is important, it tends to stick in your head better on the rewatch. I just like trying to clear things up as much as I can because the writing in this show is truly insane and I want to make sure everyone can truly appreciate how amazing it is.
