You had mentioned thinking it was the 50’s. This film was set in 1933. The same year as the original King Kong. This is brilliantly filmed and beautifully scored. Hands down the best King King adaptation.

I had to become patron to watch this. This is one of my favorite movies. I really like the 1933 original and the 1976 remake too.

I love this movie; I remember seeing the original 1933 King Kong at the drive-in when I was a kid, and I was so sad when he fell from the Empire State Building. But when I saw this remake years later, I was in tears at the end. Peter Jackson did a great job of turning Kong into a gentle giant with emotions. I agree the film is a little long; I could have done without all the bugs. The original was only 1 hour 40 minutes long, and they even gave that an intermission. I like that Peter Jackson credited the original Ann Darrow, played by Fay Wray, when Jack Black asks if "Fay" is available, and his assistant says, "She's doing a picture with RKO." Black responds, "Cooper, I should've known." Because she would have been at RKO filming King Kong at that time in 1933.

oh it's not a problem. It's super common. it's actually on the same disc. I'm just sleepy and will resync tomorrow and double check. Reaction is great so far. Also you might wanna check out Monarch, the Godzilla/Kong/Monsterverse TV show where Kurt Russel and his son Wyatt play the same character decades apart. There's more of the Iwi in it too.

unfortunately this was the only version available for me. Hopefully you can find a theatrical cut somewhere

Well... pretty sure this isn't the 3 hour and 20 minute version of the film. it went way off sync around the time Carl starts filming the dinosaurs which is when the extended edition starts adding stuff and yours flew by right into the action while mine was taking it's time. It's 11:30pm here and I'm too tired to try and swap versions and resync, so I'll try again tomorrow, but pretty sure that's the theatrical cut, not the 3 hour and 20 minute extended home video cut.

I'm glad you rewatched the movie because I knew you would enjoy it, especially the relationship between Kong and Ann. I saw the movie in the theater as well but I was a teenager at the time and was a huge LOTR fan, so I was very excited to see King Kong, since it was his first movie after the trilogy. Of course, I cried at the end. Peter Jackson relly knows how to pull at your heartstrings. Regarding your question, yes, this storyline is canon. The original King Kong movie is from 1933, it's during The Great Depression, that's why everybody is struggling. Peter Jackson saw the movie when he was a child and cried at the end when Kong died. It's his favorite movie and the reason he decided to become a filmmaker. He actually started working on a remake in the '90s but the project was halted. After the success of LOTR, he embarked on the project again and this time he had the budget for it. It is self-indulgent at times, personally I would have cut some minutes here and there from the action scenes on the island but I'm willing to overlook this, since it was obviously a passion project for Peter. The original movie is more straightforward and shorter, Ann was basically just a damsel in distress, she never befriended Kong. In the remake, they decided to expand her role and the relationship between her and Kong. Oh, and in the original, Ann was played by Fay Wray and she is mentioned by Carl Denham in the conversation he has with Preston in the car at the beginning (there are other references to the original thoughout the movie). I dont know if you're interested in behind the scenes stuff but there are some pretty lenghty production diaries for the movie. There was a website (kongisking.net) where they posted them while the movie was in production and people could send emails and ask questions and they would be answered in the following production diaries. For creating Kong, it was a combination of full animation and mocap of Andy Serkis in a gorrila suit. You can find videos on Youtube that show how they created Kong. Also, Andy Serkis went to Rwanda on his own to see mountain gorillas in their natural habitat and study their behavior.
